Shitty re-releases of games

Hope you like load times.

PC gamers are OK with only 720p/30fps, right?

Hey, how about we make the games bright and cartoony as fuck and ruin all subtlety of the originals?

BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
(Sadly, Nintendo only got it right with Twilight Princess, the worst pre-BOTW Zelda game)

3DO managed to take a Sega Genesis game, port it to the PS2, slap on a new coat of paint...and have it run like crap.

The original Genesis cart is loads better than this disc.

Huh?

The fact that you have Silent Hill avatar makes it even more baffling.

Super Mario All Stars are very good and considering they were arguably the first remasters ever, makes it eve more impressive. Plus, they gave you a never before released game in the US. It was an amazing package.

Mario All-Stars was certainly not the first remaster ever.

Go check out the 1986 version of Ultima 1 or the 1990 version of King's Quest.

What? It has the best controls of any version of 3, it's basically just Peace Walker. CQC is actually fun on the 3ds version.

By controls I didnt meant gameplay (aka crouch walk, new CQC and new moves) but more like 3DS controls ?

Eeeeeeeh list.
I meant, even in its worst state, Dark Souls was still the best version on PC.
As for Tales of Symphonia, it got patched with higher res, MSAA and outlines. So the PS2 version would be the worst.

OoT and MM 3D ??? WHAAAAAT.

He's a fan of the series so he's not allowed to have negative opinions about an objectively terrible version of a single game? What?
I think he's referring to the fact that he would expect him to be more displeased with the Silent Hill HD Collection versus what is arguably one of the better remasters around.

I kind of wish we had a 20 page thread dedicated to just shitting on this marble madness port from the op. Sounds horrendous.

Some poor kid spent money on that thing.

I DO recall Nintendo Power being vicious in their reviews on those arcade packs, though. They tried to warn us.

Mega Man Legacy Collection on PS4. Horribly laggy in a lot of stages across all games, with audio skipping to boot.

The GBA version of Marble Madness comes to mind. They literally took out 3 of the 6 levels and just had the game cut to the title screen after level 3. And I mean, this is Marble Madness, already an extremely short game, and 20 years old by the time this version came out. One of the three levels remaining is the "Practice" level which takes, not exaggerating, 5 seconds to beat.

Hoooooooooooooooooly shit how have I never seen this before? I love Marble Madness and this is just...horrendous.

You clearly misinterpreted what I wrote, which is that he chose SMB All Stars over the Silent Hill HD remaster. Not to mention that SMB All Stars is a good remaster.

Mario All-Stars was certainly not the first remaster ever.

I did say arguably. Also, I consider that version of Ultima to be a remake, since they added new content to it. Though I guess SMB All Stars could be considered such as well.

Well none of them are remasters really, seeing as that term doesnt apply to videogames, theyre ports and remakes. It's just marketing.

Sega Forever
Crazy Taxi Acclaim ports on PS2 and Gamecube
Sega Classics Collection PS2 - Golden Axe in particular
Soul Calibur on XBLA missing Mission Battle mode entirely

Your Zelda opinions are bad and you should feel bad.

? He never said remaster though. Just re-releases, which includes ports and HD versions of games does it not?

I still laugh that the PAL version of FF6, as well as other JRPGs and even SOTN are worth a fortune. They're dogshit, 50hz bordered joke ports with 2x cd drive load times.

I know, I'm just saying...videogame "remasters" is a recent marketing grab of the word, we didnt call Mario Allstars a remaster at the time.

I, too, have never played a bad re-release of a game.

SMAS is a remake not a remaster.

Most recent example I can think of being complete trash and the cheapest outsourced port around:

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas REMASTERED on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

It's basically the rushed port of the mobile version, low quality mono audio and everything, in an android emulation wrapper (the games files on both PS3 and Xbox 360 use the Android's OBB files.

Yeah this. I was such a sucker for buying that.

See title. Bad re-release versions of older games, often in compilations and such.

Yes, 2 minutes to complete the entire game, and the first 30 seconds is just startup logos. GBA Marble Madness is.about as close to releasing literally nothing as I've ever seen in my life of playing video games. And just to add insult to injury, the sound emulation sucks too, and it's missing animations and hazards.
Wow, it's like a Chinese bootleg version.

The port of Space Harrier in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection has horrendous audio that ruins the entire experience. Just listen to that hideously off-tune bassline.

isn't the timing off in Parappa HD? man that's disappointing

I've always thought the complaints about PaRappa PSP/HD were overblown. For a game that's supposedly riddled with timing issues and input lag, any decent player can still easily 100% the entire thing in a few hours with little trouble.

Majora's Mask 3D will always be my go-to answer when it comes to shitty ports/remakes. Aonuma treated the game like it was an embarrassment that he needed to fix and it really shows that the developers didn't think very highly of the original mechanics. The Zora and Deku forms being way slower, the song of time save system being tossed out, the goofy face on the moon, the rampant difficulty nerfs and the mostly awful boss changes made the remake a total disappointment for me. I never would have asked for a remake if I had known this is what they were going to do to it.

Even in terms of the visuals, I feel like MM3D missed the mark. There's almost just too much shit going on everywhere, with every surface in clock town being covered in paintings and posters to the point where it becomes gaudy. It still looks great in a lot of places but they kind of overdid it, which is a shame because OoT 3D was a really great looking game.

Those remakes were based off of the original concept art, which was (at least in OoT's case) brighter and more colorful than the original games. They really nailed it with OoT 3D- it looks like Link's concept art walked right off the page. You may prefer the N64 look, but those more colorful visuals are how the game was supposed to look before the N64 hardware beat the shit out of it.

Like I said above, MM3D is a different story. The concept art for that game was notably darker and creepier than OoT's art, but the remake didn't reflect that well at all. It was a pretty straightforward continuation of OoT3D's visuals.

The mobile and steam FFV/VI ports came to mind first. It's unfortunate that some people have only played those glorious games through such a crappy effort from Square.

Also I want to say Tales of Phantasia. Not that the various ports are bad exactly, but how can they make so many versions and never really make the game any less outdated. Going through combat in that game is a slog.

EA Replay on PSP had a great selection of games ruined by bad emulation and right issues (so for example, the entire for all the Road Rash games was replaced by a grating 5-seconds loop).
