Great work by the police capturing that piece of shit alive. Hope the casualties are minimum :/
I tagged my 'christian' friend and he reflexively replied 'nutjob' i knew he wouldnt reply 'terrorist'
Claiming mental instability is just a shadowy way of washing away ideological and secondary social factors... for obvious reasons. It reveals systemic problems people do not want to admit.
Convictions, social upbringing, etc. can all bring a person to an "unstable" mind where they view killing as justified and necessary.
So you're upset that he didn't use your negative descriptor of choice? Who cares if he didn't use the word "terrorist"?
All of this hassle just to get one person... ugh...

No fatalities announced yet. 11 people injured, 5 of which are cops. So far.My family is running around and I keep missing bits of the updates. Have they confirmed the injured? I hope no deaths. I hope only superficial injuries.
Casualties are not fatalities
A human being can't do this and be 100% mentally sound.
White right wing domestic terrorist. Wonder if the media will have the guts to actually call this what it is.
Because words matter and we only use certain words to describe certain individuals. Thug, terrorist, etc.
Nutjob implies that he was mentally ill, thus we aren't going to talk about it as a wider concern. Terrorist implies he had full control of his faculties, thus it is representative of a larger portion of society.
The liberal media will. The right wing media of course will not. CNN won't know what to say. Depends on what you listen to I guess.
Speech restrictions don't really help with this shit (see: Europe.)Wow another right wing terrorist attack in less than a week. Not really surprising when we allow shit like Fox News
So, did the guy surrender, or did the police actually manage to take him alive?
So, did the guy surrender, or did the police actually manage to take him alive?
It's irrational behavior. Why not? Valuing human life is ideological.

It isn't a "fuck the police" drum, or doesn't have to be. It's part of a larger discussion about disparities in treatment.
I'm upset that he is quick to call muslims who kill for their beliefs terrorists but wont call Americans/christians who do the same thing terrorists.
Not mentally sound does not mean legally insane.
Dude. Not the thread for this.
never the time, never the place
They got him. (alive)
I remember that. Scary stuff. Those North Hollywood guys were basically suicide by cop. Completely roid raging and basically ready to take on the entire police force (in their own minds) with terrible planning and execution. Very much on the borderline between a robbery and a suicide mission. Kind of tragically it was then used as a top excuse for the militarization of police forces everywhere despite the fact that it was a total fringe case.
That white fucking privilege.
Thought so.
I hate this kind of shit. I agree that this was an act of terrorism, but honestly words like lunatic or nutjob are what would come to mind if a friend of mine tagged me with the story. It's not because I'm trying to adhere to some code of language, it's just that I'm not used to using the term. If someone asked me, "man, this really fits the bill for terrorism, no?" I would say "absolutely."I tagged my 'christian' friend and he reflexively replied 'nutjob' i knew he wouldnt reply 'terrorist'

Yeah, had a feeling it was an older guy.
Okay, why are people trying to turn this into a "cops would have shot him if he were black" thread?
That actually does not raise the level of discussion. It lowers it.
Stop trying to seem smarter than everyone else.
Right, but what's casual about it?

Yea it could have when he fired back after the first breach. The only thing that stopped them from shooting through door was they had unknown hostages when he was hiding behind a door waiting for another siegeThe guy walked out of the building. There was no way it was ending in a hail of bullets with the press watching
t has nothing to do with trying to seem to "smarter" than everyone. It has everything to do with the fact that this terrorist shot and possibly killed several police officers and civilians, yet they were miraculous able to capture him alive. While almost everyday you get a story of an unarmed black dude being executed for much less. It's hard not to get mad at that disparity of treatment in cases like this.
