Short demonstration of Wii U's April 2013 update

They have a proper account system.

They just need to tie your purchases to it.

And then get that system working on the 3DS.

The purchases are tied to the account, but the account is tied to the hardware. So there is basically no point to the WiiU accounts.

Will Polygon update their Wii U review after this update?

Good news, I was expecting just as much. They need to focus on browser and Miiverse in my opinion, those are the two most used services for me and I guess for quite a few other people too. The snappier they are, the better it is.

The current speeds haven't bothered me that much though as most of the time I'll be just playing a game on my wii u and not really using the other services/apps/tabs. Only recently have I been using the browser a lot because of Monster Hunter.

What other complaints do you guys have about the OS rather than the load times and hard locks?
I'd like to have:
- Folders
- Download management and friend list access from the main menu, not just from the GamePad menu.
- Just overall usability of the GamePad like easier access to change brightness or turning off the display

Why compare a console to an iPad? Seems odd.

I don't think it's incorrect to say that phones, tablets and modern PCs have raised expectations for OS integration and speed on other platforms.I will be very surprised if the new Xbox or Playstation do not have instant response times as well.

Mostly stuff to do with layout, accounts and online integration.

like on the one hand it's understandable why nintendo would publicize this update to its fans, but on the other it's amazing that they're actually publicizing a firmware update for 20-second OS loadtimes

The alternative would be to quietly fix the problem and pretend it never existed. I prefer the open and honest approach, but for the system's rep maybe you're right.

Excellent. Loading from in-game to Miiverse is the big one for me though.

Future releases should really be integrating Miiverse into the game itself. That would solve that problem.

Did they ever fix that deal where you would only be notified of a friend invite if it was done through miiverse?

Specifically color-coded folders + ability to put more than one letter on the folder.

That's really great! By any chance is there more to the April update other than the loading times? Either way, this is great news! Is the summer update supposed to make it even faster?

Edit: I would really like to be able to use the Wii Mote and Pro controller when accessing the eShop, Miiverse and the System Settings. Is there any reason why it cannot be used? I Know the settings are displayed on the gamepad, but can't they just put what's on the gamepad's screen onto the TV?

Oh yeah, THIS.

I need my folders now that Virtual Console is coming. Why was this not there from the beginning, Nintendo? I mean, you have them on your 3DS, why not on the WiiU?
There's not much point when there's not a lot of apps yet and all of the Wii ones ended up in that sandbox anyway. Delaying implementation of unnecessary features is generally good practice -- it reduces the cycle time and number of bugs, for example.

nothing else visually obvious, not sure if the summer update is speed related to be honest wouldn't mind if it wasnt as that's perfectly acceptable

I watched this and was like "There's no way in hell it takes that long for my Wii U to get back to the menu" so I closed the game I was playing and... goddamn it really does. Wow. Can't wait for the update.

In this case it is pretty necessary as the entire world is well aware of the devices OS failings. It benefits them more to publicize that they are fixing their OS issues. It's kind of like those Dominos ads, "hey guys our shit used to suck but look at us now!".

What about disc loading times?

Normal? My DVD player is slower.

Agree with the first sentence, second... doubt it. Its a console launch after all. And btw, by the time the two major WiiU updates are out, we still have to wait for the two competitors. They are vaporware at the moment.

Oh cool, youtube source, my favorite source.

Please stahp^^

Lack of games.

Controller battery life is my biggest qualm, as a Monster Hunter nerd. Dies in three and a half on mid settings every time. Yeah, it's a lot of time to play, but I don't get to play my games every day, so when I get a good block of time I binge that shit.

And no, I don't want to tether my controller, especially from a wall socket. I have an irrational hate of wires, especially ten feet long ones from a power strip.

buy the nyko battery

I'm glad it's getting better, but there will be no pats on Nintendos backs from me for it. It's just now getting down to the times of 7 year old consoles, it should have been this quick from the start, hell I think it should be damn near instantaneous for a 2013 console with half its RAM dedicated to the OS.

And the Activity Log needs to be improved.

No, because I believe you can only send a request if you are over 12. They want kids (under 12 or whatever) to only add people they know in person so that's why the other method still exists.

According to Iwata these are supposed to be significant updates that will deal with consumer request for improvements with the Wii U and add new features but we'll have to wait and see what it ends up being. Vitual Console is going to launch right after the spring patch releases as well.

This looks much more acceptable.

Going on what some others have mentioned, what's with companies not adding folders from the get-go anyway. You'd think they'd realise after Apple and their iPhones.

It's definitely an improvement. But that's just one instance where it's glacially slow, so I hope the OS wholly optimized on that same level. I also hope they don't stop there, and keep improving it even further, as I feel there's room for more.

That's not exactly the most elegant way to implement such a system.

I prefer when companies admit their mistakes like this instead of corporate pride bullshit that pretends they didn't fuck up.

Just ask HaloGAF about 14 Day Buy and Play.
