Should "grown-up gamers" be looking forward to E3?

It's a massive industry event that is the focal point for an industry that is focused on AAA blockbusters, really it comes with the territory of what you should expect.

For stuff that I'd say that looks different from the norm in this space though:

WiiU and Nintendo's line-up
Dishonored
Rayman Legends
Bioshock Infinite
The Last of Us
Quantic Dream's projects

Also I'm sure some of the conferences may show a couple downloadable games in the mix as extra little things. MS tends to mention stuff like Summer of Arcade for example.

Fairly sure that most 'adults' these days are now as easily entertained as most 5 year olds.
How else do you explain the success of angry birds?
Honestly, the human race is in steep decline.
Depressed now.

I haven't been excited for an E3 since the last hardware reveals. I guess if I was going to these E3's it would be cool but for someone who is watching at home it's only exciting if you are seeing something really new and groundbreaking.

If you consider Quantic Dream the provider of grown-up, arty, intellectual games, then you probably don't actually appreciate grown-up, arty, intellectual games.

EDIT: "Grown-up" was a poor choice of words. I mean deliberately arty, intellectual games, whether indie and weird, or from a major pub and just well-crafted.

Seems like it. Well I can't wait for E3, but Im mostly interested in Nintendo so the "from a major pub and just well-crafted" part applies. Though as a grown up gamer I'm interested for other reasons.

some people really really enjoy all kinds of videogames

it's nutty, i know

E3 isn't a video game. It's a collection of video game commercials. I'm interested in hearing what comes out of E3, but excited?

edit - and apparently I posted this in the wrong E3 thread. my mistake.

I think it's safe to say that every gamer is looking forward to seeing more of The Last of Us, Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto V, and whether Nintendo bombs or lights the show on fire.

I really hope Giant Bomb is doing their after-hours live broadcasts again. Some of the best industry discussion I've watched/listened to.

So this. People were giving me weird looks when I tried to suppress my laughter on the train listening to the recordings.

Fuck Boston!

I only care about the meltdowns on GAF from the Press conferences.

I don't even game anymore

I'm more excited about Apple, Android, tech Stuff these days sadly

with crapcom doing the on disc dlc that was the final fuck you to my face (whole sleuth of BS gamers had to deal with this gen) 2005-2012

I'm out for now and will see what happens next gen if I even care about it

Even your edit explanation gives a bad impression. If you're a Gamer, you should be looking forward to E3.

It's not always across the board with everyone.

Some of us are looking for games that challenge us on more of an intellectual level - be it narrative or otherwise. There's nothing wrong with being picky about what E3 has to offer. I'm nearing 30, and a good 90% of the shit at E3 leaves me completely apathetic. But each year I still tune in, in hopes of something that'll pique my interest. We've had games this generation like Bioshock, Journey, Braid, Alice Madness Returns, and The Witness that are absolutely aimed at "grown-ups."

Also, this.

The only thing I'm looking forward to is Nintendo's presser. This might as well be called the WiiU Expo as far as I'm concerned.

Op, I don't think you realize who gamers are as a whole. You're missing the point, and if you're 11 years and posting this...
I am a grown-up, I am offend!

This is going to be my first E3 and I'm curious on how much variety there will be on offer. I'm always being told that there is much more on how than what gets reported on - purely because us journos need to prioritise what'll do well hits wise.

I'm lucky as I'm going for a national paper so I should get some freedom to blog about the different stuff - if it's there that is.

yes, i don't think much kids know about E3 anyway

i asked my cousins who are 13 and they have no clue what it is and thought i was crazy

get hyped :P

If you're looking for those types of games, then you're looking forward to E3. There's usually something for everyone. The conferences focus on the EVENT games but there's plenty on the show floor that may be exactly what you're looking for.

Also, if you're looking forward to the meltdowns, you're still looking forward to E3.

When I was that age, I knew about both CES shows. Loved the Nintendo Power CES issues!

Why don't you read literature, philosophy and history, watch documentaries etc. to satisfy you on the intelectual/spiritual level?

We've had games this generation like Bioshock, Journey, Braid, Alice Madness Returns, and The Witness that are absolutely aimed at "grown-ups.".

Could you explain how are those games aimed at "grown-ups"? Or are they just ARTSY and SMARTSY without any deeper analysis.

Just give me a few core Japanese titles (preferably new IPs) for consoles and I'll be happy. It doesn't take much... but still E3 '11 disappointed.

I have and I do on a regular basis. Wanting (some) games to do that same shouldn't be asking too much.

They are games aimed at adults, not children. Just like literature and films they contain elements intended for mature audiences. It ain't hard to figure out.

Sorry if I was unclear. I'm just asking if, as someone with admittedly artsy, pretentious tastes, does GAF think I have any reason to be excited about E3?

I just mean a few standout titles. Not a whole show about Journey or System Shock or whatever you consider to be 'mature' or 'smart' or whatever.

Edit: well maybe not so stealth but c'mon...

The press conferences will appeal to the crowd by default, they have too.

But games of all sorts will be covered.

Sophisticated. That's the word you were looking for.

This! I've been 100% PC only for nearly 5 months now. The only console I'm interested in at this point is the Wii U because I love Nintendo games.

This is starting to sound like waffle and pseudo-intellectualism. I want you to explain how are those game aimed at adults. What exactly consitutes an "adult game"?

Quake is more mechanically complex (skill-based) and mentally engaging than any of those games. But, guns and blood are for stupid people, right?

"grown-up" gamers?
Nah, I don't think people who bought and used WiiFit or EA Sports Active need to look forward to anything this year.

Insecurity leeds to funny things..

Some people still have their inner child. They are curious, playfull, open minded. They tend to see games as another way to have fun.
Have fun goddammit. Don't worry about silly words like "adult", 'Kiddy", "mature", etc.
People have different interests.

These shows are often for bigger budgeted games. For more experimental stuff PAX and smaller venues seems to be the place for those kind of offerings.

Going by this edit, and not the confusing "grown-up" bit, I'd have to say no.

Which shouldn't be surprising in my mind. I don't think E3 is really about that type of game. I'm sure there will be something, somewhere on the floor covered by someone that may be what you're seeking, but it isn't the focus here. I see people complain about that every year, but meh. It's about the spectacle at E3 from the big companies. Some people still get hyped for all that.

There's plenty of other venues these days for games that would be more up your alley.

But it's also not trying too hard to be highbrow or anything, and its gameplay is the strongest point. It just is what it is.

Mechanically it's not very good. I think I'd put Invisible War above it.

We are never going to get a game like the original ever again because the modern-day gamer is too dumb, frankly lol. And the people developing the games don't have the talent of the Origin/LGS/ISA school of game design. Even if they did, they wouldn't get the budget needed to have production values on the level of pretty much any other first person shooter on the market in order to competitive. Sucks!

I miss the days when the most important aspect of a game is judged solely to how "fun" it is. Now we get all these attachments like "artsy", "intellectual", and all that stuff, and games that just simply are "fun" are viewed as "lesser" or worse, "kiddie".

In that note, however, I think E3 will have something for everyone, from the "kiddie" gamers to the "sophisticated" gamers to "adult" gamers, whatever that means.

We live in the age of graphics > gameplay. Less pixels, less fun!

Not that I agree with OP but not every piece of entertainment has to be "fun".
