Should we boycott Shadow Complex?

So.....wait. Supporting the idea of evolution on these boards is a bannable offense? What?
People did evolve, but not from monkeys. Saying so is just a way of deflecting the truth.

Yeah I actually hesitated buying the game because of it. But I'd rather try and play a fun game and be a hypocrite than not.

I haven't beaten it yet, so if it turns out to not be that great I'll just say I bought it but I hated it

So we know for a fact where man evolved from?

I don't particularly care for whatever arguments the dick the OP refers to has to say about anything, but he has a right to say it, however wrong I believe it maybe.

My point is that you can't exactly hide from it or ignore it, banning that other guy for his opinion on the matter seemed a little overkill. He didn't actively point anyone out to insult them but he said something that to some people can be construed as insulting, in much the same way that I think most religions are a load of wank but I don't think members should be banned for believing creationism over evolution nor vice versa.

I mean when it really boils down to it, I could find a reason to not buy anyone's stuff by critiquing the people associated with it. Some people are racist, some are homophobic, some are anti-establishment, etc etc. But if you want to do what the OP says, then I suggest you apply this to all future purchases.

Even better, I have some suggestions for you. Do not ever go to any of these places: AutoZone, Cracker Barrel, Dish Network, Domino’s Pizza, ExxonMobil, Meijer, Salvation Army, and last but not least.... Wal-Mart Stores Inc. These are all companies that do not support gay rights in any way....

Your move Coins. If you can convince me you don't ever use walmart, I wont buy this game.

Great post Bryant. I was going to say something similar, but you said it very well.

Don't forget to boycott your local bookstores while you're at it. You'll find any number of opinionated works there that espouse views/beliefs counter to your own.

since when did "Who made the game determines who gets my monies via my online GAF persona" become an issue?

Every 360 owner needs to buy this game... Hell, I hope this comes to Steam for us PC guys. I'm not getting the overall compliant from the OP considering that Cliffy has always maintained it is loosely based on the story.

*sigh* 10 hours later, people are still chiming in without reading the thread, posting arguments that have been mulled to death over.

You regularly buy your local bookstore's entire inventory?

Not at all the same thing. The equivalent would be people claiming you should boycott Xbox Live rather than just the individual game. I didn't see anyone in this thread even remotely hinting at this type of drastic measure.

I really hope some of you guys make it to Philosophy 101 and learn about straw man arguments someday.

I'm gay and I bought this game.

Of course, I didn't know about the author or whatever...and after reading through the OP, I still don't care because I like the game.

Every individual book you buy supports their business, which then pays for the ordering of hundreds of "offensive" (to anyone, pick your poison) books that are then sold for money, the authors of which get that money, and get to profit off their evil offensiveness.

This thread has been epic. People are discussing ape men and electricity and gays and straights and everything in between.

Sure, "arguments." :lol

I can't wait until Orson Scott Card himself reveals his secret NeoGAF account and posts "im in ur base, stealing ur civil rightz!"

out of curiosity, has coins checked to see the political donations and activities of other games? Will Wright is a republican donator. Does that mean you should boycott SimCity, Spore and everything else he has done?

You do realize that there are many people that don't ever use Walmart for myriad political reasons.

I don't use Wal Mart because a lot of fat, unhygienic and generally annoying people go there,(omg disclaimer: not implying that fat people are more annoying than non-fat people) and also weird hobos in the parking lot. These hobos talk to walls.

Oh yeah, and it smells funny in Wal Mart.

I think we need to make a distinction between political views and being anti-gay. They are not the same. Homophobia and intolerance are not political positions.

I don't not (yeah I went double negative on you) use it because I'm not a pretentious douchebag who pretends that where you shop says something about the person that you are.

If we're going to stereotype certain stores though, can we talk about the fuckwits at whole foods, hot topic, abercrombie, and radio shack?

Comment of the thread for me so far, well done.

Yeah, the only accurate way to judge people is by what they post on internet gaming forums, not by what stores they frequent. :lol

Edit: And I'm insulted that you had to edit in bold on the double negative! Do you take me for some kind of mongrel? :D

Have you ever read the OT? That's like all it is pretty much.

So, just to clarify, I'm somehow against the distribution method now and not the individual product?

No one has taken that stance. Most have even tip-toed around it with comments like "you have a right to say it, but I don't have to listen."

I'm all for separating the art from the artist, which is something I've recently had to do after discovering that I truly, deeply love the Mad Max series, but this thread is starting to devolve into half-baked metaphors that put words into people's mouths.

.

You're against remuneration to someone who has political views you find offensive. I have explained how each situation provides the same. I'm not sure how you cannot understand the concept.

The "what!" from ProtonJonSA is what came to my mind after reading this.
It's funny that people doesn't belive in scientific facts. I'm pretty sure that having just a 8% different genome code of a simian does not mean we're the same :lol

Starting? :lol It started with a pointless OP and has been nothing but what you describe the whole way through.

And here I thought you hated me for my opinion on Wal-Mart and its denizens!

It's not about what you like, it's how fun it is to hate things. Go bold or go home.

Will Wright doesnt write blogs saying disgusting things about gay people like OCS the homophobe does.

Youre ridiculous arguments that state I shouldnt buy anything anymore are absurd. OCS spends his time and money trying to take away peoples rights. I dont see Will Wright, or anyone else for that matter, doing so.

I go to Wal-mart because, seriously, if you need a mouse at 3:00 AM, where are you going to go?

I feel there's differences between boycotting all modern conveniences that may have seedy underbellies and opting out from an entertaining diversion that involves someone you don't wish to fund.

But tomato, other pronunciation of tomato you can't tell through text.

Don't worry, since you created this magnificent thread, I'm sure Orson Scott Card's nefarious schemes of (anti-gay) world domination have been foiled.

I'm sure he'll be too poor to afford a computer and internet access as a result, thus preventing him from continuing to post blogs.

Well, I hope it doesnt get that bad for him. He is entitled to his own opinion. I just dont want my money going to him funding NOM.

You know, it's shit like this that...nevermind. I don't have the energy anymore.

You guys win! All personal boycotts are specifically about bankrupting the target, they have nothing to do with personal choices about where your money goes. You can go ahead and gloat that everyone was not nearly as smart as you and their beliefs are utterly worthless compared to the mighty logic that Orson Scott Card is still going to have somewhere to live even if three or four people don't buy Shadow Complex.

Let's take the politics aspect out of the equation and say that I just don't appreciate science-fiction. Saying "I will not buy a sci-fi book" is the equivalent of saying "I should not buy any book?"

Edit: Unless, I supposed, I'm to buy all my books from a store that does not offer science-fiction. But my complaint is that sci-fi doesn't appeal to me, not that it is offered.

Fighting my sarcastic post with more sarcasm? You've started a perpetual feedback loop! Nooo!

The OP is well within his rights to boycott the game for his reasons, and his reasoning is sound if extreme.

The fatal mistake was making a thread here about it, something which screams attention-whoring no matter how many disclaimers or claims to the contrary are made.

I considered boycotting Will Wright games because he supports Republican candidates, but then I realised I can make my own purchasing decision and if I find a game conservative, homophobic, racist or sexist, I can do more good by its analysis and writing about it somewhere (not on a forum, say) in a measured way rather than the infinitesimal evil I cause by buying it.

ice cream hasn't been banned because we thoroughly wrecked his opinion in that thread that he stated sexuality could be changed, and I think the admins didn't feel like a ban would be necessary. He hasn't said shit since. :lol

levious said:
he's certainly afraid of what they'll do to the country and its future generations... isn't that enough?
To call him a homophobe? No, levious, any more than it was justified to call Bush (by any rational estimation an inept president) a racist following Hurricane Katrina. "Well, a lot of the people he isn't getting help to fast enough are black. Everyone hates him anyway. He's awful. So awful it's probably true! Why not? He sucks!"

It might make you feel good since you dislike him, but it isn't necessarily accurate. Might I suggest a generic insult like "shithead" instead?

I swear to god, the inability of so many otherwise intelligent people on these forums to think critically scares the shit out of me sometimes. But hey, who needs that stuff when you're outraged?

Holy shit. I'm not going near that one.
