My opinion? It's stylized different, but I actually think from what I hear it all sounds quite excellent. I think it lives up to the series standard.

The Licht tracks are great, sounds more promising than the last few Yamaoka soundtracks to be honest.

Amazing that Konami even found a way to smear some shit on the soundtrack.

Definitely some subtle Suspiria soundtrack influence there. Well, maybe not directly influenced by it, but some of it sounds very similar. Also some subtle Akira elements as well.

I don't know, I can't do without Yamaoka. The soundtrack doesn't sound very horrifying when I listen to them, except for maybe Don't Go In The Basement and Stalking for Dinner. Maybe I am just spoiled from recently playing Cry of Fear, since that mod had fantastic music for a horror game.

It is kind of weird knowing that there will never be another Silent Hill game with Akira Yamaoka.

That youtube video was really nice. I hope the game ends up being good, and that there is a lot of exploration. I'm in the mood for a good horror game. I don't have very high hopes though...

Hardly, for me.
I find it easier to not consider these new games "new Silent Hills" since the style is simply so different, it just ends up ruining the enjoyment i can get from them.
This one is not a Silent Hill sequel to me, just another horror game in its own right.

I remember vividly of being incredibly spooked when in the first Silent Hill, during the early part of the game, Harry stumbled upon a wheelchair and a bed... and the camera tilted at just the right angle to create a sense of.... uneasiness.

Silent Hill 2: the first time James saw Pyramid Head... when he just stood there, unmoving, with only a single iron fence that stand in between the two. Incredibly chilling moment.

Or Silent Hill 3: the screaming mannequin (I literally shouted HOLY FUCK! with goosebumps on my skin) and the famous mirror room. Incredible, incredible experience.

....

It's a shame that nowadays it seems like Konami only cares about Metal Gear and Kojima :(

I agree. I think the music sounds good and all, but it seem to lack the insanity and rawness that I enjoy in SH soundtracks... this sounds more like a soundtrack for a slightly spooky movie. Hopefully it still works in the context of the game.

The theme by Licht sounds excellent. It's missing that key Yamaoka + McGlynn vibe but it's up to the series high standards. I'm starting to actually believe the game will be good! I hope it's good, I hope it's the renaissance this god forsaken series needs.

what in homecoming was as bad as the weapon breaking, the terrible rag doll dress legs thing, or the exploding blood punch? also, that has to be one of the most boring looking enemies in the series.

Weapon breaking was in SH4 and 0rigins too. Sure, it sucks, but I can deal with it. What I could not deal with, however, was the terrible combat in Homecoming where they threw in blocking and dodging (fuck that shit), coupled with enemies that would block your attacks, making attacks with melee weapons a nightmare, or gang up on you and rape you till your ass prolapsed, like the fucking nurses loved to do. Fuck, Homecoming was so bad I'm getting agitated just thinking about that soul-raping piece of shit. Fuck that game and everyone who worked on it *spits*

it's not that the weapon breaks, it's the terrible way in which it breaks.

i guess 'swing, swing, swing, swing, swing' is somehow better than 'dodge, dodge, swing, dodge'.

Are you referring to how the weapon kinda flew out of his hand? Sure, looked dumb, but it still looks about a million times better than the shit they pulled in Homecoming.

that and how it shattered into multiple pieces that didn't respond to anything approaching realistic physics. and can we talk about that punch animation?

and no, the combat doesn't look 'a million times better than the shit they pulled in homecoming'. i just recently replayed some of homecoming, it isn't great, but there is nothing broken about the combat. it being a bit more involved may not be what people wanted from a silent hill game, but it sure as hell looks a lot better in videos than this does. i find it more engaging than the banal battering to death of harmless shambling things in Silent Hill 2. oh no, the enemies actually attack and you have to try and dodge them! how terrible? average? sure. functional? sure. better looking than what's in that video? absolutely.

i want to be optimistic too, but let's not blindly pretend that everything in this looks better than everything in homecoming. it really doesn't.

so, if the combat is terrible in this, it won't be a deal breaker for me, as it wasn't in SH2... but i'd prefer it if the combat wasn't terrible. hell i'd prefer SH2 if it had the combat from Homecoming. at least then it wouldn't feel like the enemies were slowly moving barracades that i didn't so much have to survive against, but repeatedly hit until they weren't in my way anymore.

Downpour doesn't look amazing by any means, but better than Homecoming? Definitely. Homecoming might possibly be the single shittiest SH game I've ever played, even worse than Shattered Memories and Play Novel. Awful combat, dumb story, pitiful graphics and suddenly; Pyramid Head. Garbage game.

As for the combat, I prefer the combat in SH 1-3 any day. It was simple, at times even kind of clunky, but I vastly prefer its simplicity to the dodge dodge dodge swing fuck I missed dodge dodge dodge great I'm dead shit Double Helix pulled for Homecoming. In SH 1-3 you'd just kill whatever enemy that appeared, and then go on with your business, while in Homecoming they basically amped up the combat until the game became a third person action game with half-assed horror elements, forcing you to spend much more time in combat than you ideally should. And the game was cheap as fuck on ammo and medkits too.
