Caught this at the cinema a couple of days ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Jennifer Lawrence's performance was a bit iffy at parts and I didn't like the
Robert De Niro's weird gambling addiction sideplot
but it did kept me intrigued throughout. Wasn't even aware that it was directed by the same guy who did Three Kings and The Fighter.

Just saw it and absolutely loved it. Yes, it takes all the familiar twists and turns a romantic comedy tends to, but I felt everything was so honest and real and every emotion was earned. Jennifer Lawrence was especially fantastic in this. Probably my favorite film of the year at this point.

I feel really justified now having been on the Bradley Cooper train for 4-5 years now. He was awesome in this (hope he can land an Oscar nod) and I feel like he's got a lot of great work ahead of him.

i had never seen him in anything besides hangover (which i thought was really overrated) but yeah he was great in this

and jennifer lawrence is 2/2 for me so far

This movie was amazing.

Bradley Cooper needs an Oscar nod for this.

And Jennifer Lawrence was literally dizzying with her hotness.

Saw this back in October, still ended up one of my favorites of the year, glad to see all the love for it.

I'm imagining this and Lincoln will be the BP frontrunners.

After The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, I'm incredibly impressed with David O. Russell's ability to perfectly capture blue-collar America.

Brilliant stuff.

what?

glad it's getting recognition, but giving Jen Lawrence the nod for best actress is insane.

I don't know, I really liked Jennifer Lawrence in this.

Very happy about all the nominations. One of my favourites of last year.

Especially after imitating a talking plank in The Hunger Games.

that was more the script than anything else. she has range and ability, but the material there didn't require her to do more than just put on a frown-y face.

I feel she was phoning it in and was continually upstaged by the more subtle and perfectly executed cooper.. she wasn't anywhere near as she was in winter's bone. now that I look at that list again, I'm surprised to see de niro on there too. he was better than he's been in recent years, but still felt like a forced performance.

Finally caught this and loved it to bits. I've wanted to see it since opening weekend but never found time. Honestly, I wanted to see it because of David O. Russell; he's steadily becoming my favorite director. He's become more grounded since films like I <3 Huckabees but I love how versatile he is and how varied his films are. This was great and probably my favorite movie of the year. Funny sad and heartwarming without ever being sappy.

This was easily my favorite film from 2012 (that I've seen so far). Loved how the ups and downs in the story with the comedic and dramatic scenes relates to Cooper's character being bi-polar.

As someone who has struggled with mental illness myself, the movie hit really close to home, even though my situation is different, there were parallels to be drawn.

The scene where Cooper goes apeshit over A Farewell to Arms was one of my standout favorites (I think it was previewed in a trailer, so not quite as shocking to me as it could have been), though there are a lot of choice moments.

The thing about SLP is that it's not just another cheesy romcom, even though that's the skeleton on which it's built. It's a lot more somber than a typical romcom would be, for one, but it also just feels very authentic, albeit exaggerated.

"What the fuck?"

*throws book out window*

Loved that moment.

Why the fuck does this movie only come out in Australia at the end of january, when it's already been out in the US for almost two months?

It feels like this is becoming a pattern lately. For a while there Aus used to get similar release windows (or so I felt) but now it seems terrible:

Lincoln - three months after US release (still not out yet)
Life of Pi - a few weeks later
Wreck-it Ralph - only just now released
Even the Hobbit, which I thought would be a simultaneous worldwide release (similar to LOTR) was a staggered release with Australia at the back end.

Perhaps Sculli can shed some light on this.

This really bugs me as well. Super keen to see SLP and checked my local cinema and its not screening till 30th January. Its the same case with ZDT

Jumping on board with this movie. Loved it so much.

I doubt it will win much (DDL will win Actor, Lincoln will take whatever it thirsts for), but I'm glad it got all the nods, and glad it got the "not since the 80s has a film received noms for all four acting awards" prestige.

Movie was just okay. The first third or so of the movie was very good. After that it turns to typical rom com stuff. While not poorly executed, it kind of bore me. The scene where
Lawrence talked about sports was particularly cringe worthy.
There were some good scenes for sure, Cooper was great, Lawrence and De Niro were good. The movie just puttered along after a certain point. Movie had inconsistent direction as well. It was an enjoyable flick though, I can see why many enjoy it, just didn't stick out as a great movie.
7/10

-Why was Weaver nominated for an oscar, she just had a teary eyes and a sad look constantly
-Scene where
De Niro's character wakes Cooper up and talks about wanting to spend time with him was excellent.
-Cooper's character felt perfectly unpredictable.
-Humor was inconsistent.

Very fun and likeable movie but I have no idea how it got a best picture nomination. The longer it went and the cheesier it got, the more this baffled me. Wish I could have shut this out of my mind and just enjoyed the movie for the lightweight entertainment it is, probably my fault for not being able to. But I liked it a lot, found myself wishing I could meet people like this in real life, and that's a good sign for a character driven movie like this. And I'm pretty much in love with Jennifer Laurence now.

This movie is tied with ZDT for my favorite movie of the year. I was surprised how much I loved it . It really hit close to home with me. De Niro was amazing.

Finally saw it and loved it! Great movie that shows you can do romantic comedies really well.

Amazing to see Deniro finally have something to work with and his scene in the attic with Cooper almost brought me to tears.

And one of my all time favorite Indian actors is inn it! Anumpham was really good. They all were. I knew j-law could act but Cooper really surprised me. I haven't seen all the bp nominated movies yet but I'd like to see this movie pick up some awards.

Was especially close to my heart since I grew up in that area of Philly and am a diehard Eagles fan. Knew exactly what they were talking about with each game of the 2008 season. Though caught a mistake: they showed Nnamdi Vick's jerseys and they weren't on the team at the time. Really felt like some of my childhood and emotions were in screen. And I can totally see myself as a dad like Dinero with my kids watching the games thinking about the Eagles talking abiyt the Eagles.

Yeah, I'm rooting for this movie to win Best Picture now. I didn't think any of the acting performances in of themselves were "Oscar worthy" but everyone did a great job and the complete package was stellar.

Cooper gave the best performance, but he's got way too tough competition to win. Getting the nom was the victory here. Love Cooper and that was fucking well deserved.

I think Bradley Cooper was a twat but I really only saw him in Hangover. Liked him in here. Pleasant surprise.

It's a likeable film and it's nice to see DeNiro act again for once.

Don't think it should win though, but nothing nominated this year really grabbed me (I have yet to see Amour). I guess I'm rooting for Lincoln.

So what all has Expendable pegged to win BP this year? We've got this, Zero Dark Thirty, and anything else? I'm just wondering what else I need to be ready to watch crash and burn at the Oscars next month.

Ha, this thread was made super early before we saw most of the films -- was the frontrunner back then. My vote would be for Lincoln at this stage. What is your pick?

Also, not sure what you mean by "crash and burn." This was the first film in over three decades to nab noms in all four acting categories, a HUGE sign of its strength amongst Oscar voters.

Cooper I think was. Its not show offy but he played amazingly a person going through these kinds of mental problems. Its hard to appreciate unless you've been there or seen someone there. The

So many of the things were things I had experienced (obviously with more dramatic effect). DDL probably deserves it more because he's that good but I wouldn't be shocked if brad wins considering half of hollywood is crazy/depressed/bipolar.

I think this might be my favorite movie of the year (still haven't seen ZDT) and its def. my favorite romcom of all time.
