When they were dancing and Bradley Cooper picked Jennifer Lawrence up by her vag, was that the dance move they were practicing?
I laughed out loud.

Blah i want my two hours back. a generic romantic unfunny comedy chick flick.

Yes , Jennifer lawerence is gorgeous but that could not save this movie.

Yes and
they didn't do it right

really? also don't see how this is a chick flick, focused much more on the males point of view than the females

The whole movie is the hot troubled girl trying to seduce a dumb guy who is trying to get his wife back ,
and gets her way even though she was a manipulative bitch (the letter)

That really is not at all what it is.

Fantastic film, but I'd prefer it to go to something a little more ambitious.

I agree with him.

The only thing unique about this movie was the mental illness spin, which is a strange thing to be praising.

Other than that it was a generic rom com complete with ***MAJOR SPOILER***
A COMPETITION AT THE END OF THE FUCKING MOVIE TO WIN THE HEART OF ANOTHER GIRL ONLY TO REJECT HER AND CHOOSE THE GIRL HE'S KNOWN FOR A MONTH WTF

Calling the mental illness theme a 'spin' is really underselling it.

I agree with him.

I bet there are people like Robert Deniro's character that actually exist.
He was as crazy as Bradley Cooper's character. Betting all your money on the outcome of a football game because you think your son is good luck and him being at the game will help them win is crazy. And then he was so pissed off that he got kicked out. Not because he could be sent back to the hospital but because he thinks him getting kicked out cost the Eagles the game. Nuts!!

Deniro I thought did a great job though. Probably the first time he hasn't phoned it in in over a decade.

If the third act of this movie lived up to the first two, then it would've been my favorite film of the year but in the end... eh.

Lol well put.

Exactly. The brother seemed to have some kind of mental illness, as did the dad. It's just they didn't go through what Cooper did.

She cheated on him, she left him, he admitted throughout the entire movie that they weren't happy. They would change each other etc. Who the hell knows if this girl he's known for a month will work out, but she was the right one for that moment.

So the woman
is manipulating a "dumb guy"
. Very simple reading of this film.

I agree. Also I wish two lovers got all the awards and audience attention that this did. More people need to see that movie

Forget about the oscars and shit I think I'm just losing touch with gaf taste too :(

yeah and zero dark thirty is about finding a terrorist. You can dumb down any movie you want to prove your point, but at the end of the day there is much more going on in this film than you seemed to notice, only proving that you don't really know how to watch and interpret a film. What about the father, with his crippling bets and OCD that restrain him from actually getting to know his son because he only uses said son for the purpose of "juju?" How cliche! Deniro's admittance of remorse about halfway through is his best performance in a long time.

I agree with him.

Mental illness is a topic that rarely gets covered in film, and here it's done expertly. The movie treats it as if it is any other character flaw. I don't think there's anything "strange" about praising that. And you've got the ending all wrong. The dance competition was initially there to show his wife (who he hadn't seen / talked to in nearly a year) that he was getting better and that maybe they could try again. After he found out that Nikki didn't even get his letter, he realized that maybe they didn't need to try again. The two protagonists merely accepted their own diseases and learned that they could control the sickness with the help of each other.

^^ great post, exactly what I wish I could have written if were not so tired.

Based on this film and The Fighter, David O Russell sure seems to be adept at writing compelling characters.

When Bradley Cooper was complaining about
the depressing ending to A Farewell to Arms when the guy's wife dies at the end after they escaped to Switzerland, I thought for sure the film would end with some depressing shit like Jennifer Lawrence's character dying.

I was a bit surprised and disappointed that it ended like any other romantic comedy.

He's definitely become waaaaaaaaaaayyy more grounded than he used to be (see I <3 Huckabees) but this guy can do no wrong. At least, so far. Great director.

Seriously get off your high horse , opinions , how do they work ?

No need to dumb down zero dark thirty , it does that to itself.

Seeing clips from the Golden Globes of the jogging part made me wish this would hit VOD or even iTunes early digital rental soon. Totally looking forward to the dance scene.

So weird as a Giants fan enjoying literature about an Eagles family. ;)

You can simplify almost any film, I was just using ZDT as an example. I'm sorry, man. This is my favorite movie of the year and reading that people are missing the point is a bit frustrating.

I get everyone's nomination. Especially cooper and Deniro. But not weaver, wtf was there just a lack of good female supporting roles this year? Cuz she wasn't special in the slightest

Cooper definitely surprised me with this one... I'd like to see him take on more roles like this.

Saw it yesterday. Such a great film. Cooper did an amazing Job and was very deserving of that Best Actor nod. J Law was great as well. Not likely to win best picture, but has a shot in Best Adapted Screen play and Best Actress.

I think Jacki Weaver's nomination was a result of SLP being the film that the most voters actually saw. So, instead of picking some more obscure like the deserving Ann Dowd from Compliance, they went with Weaver.

I really liked the movie. Second only to Moonrise Kingdom of course. I'm a huge Lawrence and Cooper fan that some of the film's problems didn't bug me as much.

Cooper's best work since Kitchen Confidential.

Just saw this movie over the weekend and thought it was fantastic.

I honestly knew NOTHING about this movie before seeing it. From clips of commercials it looked like a Football themed chick flick. I didn't expect any of the mental illness and family themes. So much better than most of the garbage I've seen recently. This, Django Unchained, and Skyfall have been such great movie experiences this year (ok we're in January now, but close enough). Movies are so much better when you don't have half the movie spoiled by trailers and commercials.

Also, I never really though of Jennifer Lawrence as "hot" until this movie. Always thought she was pretty good looking and acted fine, but then DAMN at her in this movie! DAAAAAAMN!

Wow a great a film, for some reason i did not seem like a chick film, i think it was to bright and differen,

t a lot little things thrown in I like.

I love the fact the Stevie wonder's "dont you worry about a thing" was the song they used in the dance scene. How it represents Pat(cooper) finally getting over his ex-wife, and having Stevie wonder now associated with Tiffany(Lawrence). nice little touch

Why is no one talking about Chris Tucker?!!! he was amazing in this

I thought one of the funniest bits in the film, even though it was almost a whisper, was when
Jennifer Lawrence's character was explaining how well the Eagles do when she hangs out with Pat and his doctor said "Fascinating."
For some reason that line got me.

This is my favorite movie of the year so far... Probably... It's a good example Howard Hawks' old adage, "three great scenes, no bad scenes." I just can't find any flaws.

Really? I watched it last week and it was okay.. nothing special.
Thought the ending was poor and the whole superstition subplot just bad - the movie's conclusion was partly reliant on "luck".

I thought it was terrific. A bunch of great performances, Cooper especially being a revelation. The third act wasn't as strong as the rest (and certainly was more conventional) but the chemistry of the leads makes it work.

I finished watching it five minutes ago. That was a fine film. I loved Lawrence and Cooper. Both did a great job and are deserving of an Oscar.

I like this movie alot. I am not sure if I like this or ZDT more. I need to watch them again to decide.

People who complain about the lite ending, keep in mind that the title of the movie is "silver linings". This has to be figured into the ending. Grandly I didn't realized it when I was watching it. Maybe Cooper should have say something toward the end.

I think the best actor in it is Jennifer Lawrence.

Great movie. Took the bad taste out of my mouth. Makes up for Hunger Games.

Oh and Chris Tucker was good too...however minor his role haha

Got around to seeing this movie tonight and I was not disappointed. Loved the movie. The acting was exceptional throughout. I was especially surprised by Bradley Cooper, but the true standout acting wise to me was Jennifer Lawrence. Both were very believable in their roles and had really good chemistry together. Also good to see Robert Deniro in a good movie again and doing a really great job. Chris Tucker, even in a relatively small capacity, was really fun to see again too.

I can definitely see why this movie was up for Best Picture and why the various actors in it are up for awards as well. I especially hope Jennifer Lawrence wins Best Actress at the Oscars.
