Sitting through political talk with family is so tiring.

The amount of "Hilary is a murderer" and "Emperor Hussein Obama" talk I have to sit through and nod is getting old. God why do I have to live with these fucking people.

The worst part is if I try any kind of argument I'll be told I'm brainwashed by the media, because they have the facts.

That must be so frustrating :|

I'm glad my parents are fairly liberal, but more importantly actually respond well to reason and logic.

After a while, you learn to just not get involved. It's usually not worth it. If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone in my family say Hillary is a criminal who deserves to be in jail or worse, I could probably retire early.

My mother's side of the family is extremely conservative, but luckily don't subscribe to insane conspiracy theories. They just really, really like guns.

Just leave. Say that you'd rather not listen to their political views and leave. What would their response be? "No, sit down and listen to what we have to say?" No, just walk out. Trust me, it's a valid strategy and it gets your point across.

Edit: as in leave the room or whatever and go do something else. I should start doing tone once-overs on my posts.

Sorry to hear. In my family only my dad and like two brothers were outright conservative let alone republican, out of 11 . The bigger part of the family is more mixed since there is a ton of military experience and blow back to either side. Then there are types like me who don't really care for most of it except ensuring the worst doesn't happen every 4 years, midterms are another matter I vote but that doesn't change most of the people on team blue supposedly.

Gaffers say it all the time here and I will say it again don't waste time on the stubbornly foolish. Unless they want serious changes and are asking about them they literally are nothing more then self appointed gaurdians of the systemtic process they are part of in their own twisted way. I'd say it likes talking with a wall, but walls don't talk and even they aren't half as dense as the types you describe.

It's not Emperor Hussein Obama, it's Sultan Hussein Obama.
I thought it was B-Rock "The Islamic Shock" Hussein Superallah Obama.

Whenever I'm in a similar situation to the OP I just sort of nod without adding anything. That usually shifts the conversation elsewhere after the person vented some stuff.

I'm lucky I'm stuck with political apathy in my family. Though sometimes I get terrible "jokes" about how you can see Lady Gaga's Adams apple and complaints about BLM with comments like "Some guy got his throat cut a week ago, and they protest this?"

Other than that it's been fine. Or they talk about stuff while I'm not there because I usually argue, but thats fine with me.

My parents fought off against politics for a while that we decided its better off if my dad didn't discuss politics with the family or online.

I don't blame them. Political discussion usually fractures families.

I feel you OP. My family is strange though, they have a Republican mindset (less government support) and conservative mindset (against BLM, very religious), yet vote Democratic.

It could be a lot worse, but it's tiring to have to hear about how homeless people are human garbage, how poor people need to work harder, how people of color just need to get it together.

My solution? Moved out and only visit once a month.

I don't do much political discussion. My brother used to bring it up a lot growing up. He went from left wing socialist to right wing individualist which was fun to see. I always just let it go, until one evening I called him out on some bullshit when he basically told everyone who has it bad was lazy. He forgot we kind of had a spectacular upbringing, without worry about money or student debt, and little housing costs when moving out due to help from our parents giving a lot of freedom and opportunity. Only time I got actual upset in a political discussion, since his tone was just one of being above everyone else. We don't talk politics much anymore.

I'm in the same boat. I am very very liberal and every other person in my family is the exact opposite. I can't even talk politics with them at all. I still consider myself open minded and will listen to all sides but talking with them and listening to them is fucking frustrating. They listen to fox news and believe whatever they say.

Talking politics with anyone that considers it a team sport is about the worst conversation imaginable. Both parties are full of such corruption and idiocy that every body on either team has had cognitive bias helping them swallow bullshit until it's all they can spout.

Everyone has more to say about how terrible the other team is than anything regarding political action or philosophy.

The only thing worse is religion.

Part of life. I tried for a while to talk politics with my family but now I just avoid the topic.

I get along great with them in every other regard, so it's not a huge deal

While I usually have this issue since most of my family close to extended other than my mother and brother and me are conservative republicans, it's not been a problem this election since they all are voting Hillary over trump because while they do have shitty values and privilege they are not completely insane.

Hot sauce goes great with conservative nonsense.

Yeah, usually it's not bad but I went through a few spates of it on vacation with my dad last week. He started talking shit about Kaepernick as small talk and there's just no talking sense to him regarding black lives matter and the police situation, just gross generalizations and a startling lack of empathy.

At least he recognizes that Trump is a shitheel.

I keep calling family out. After saying "Love ya, but you're factually wrong. Maybe you should learn a little more before talking." to my wife's family they've stopped bringing it up. The emails stopped long ago.

I actually have immediate family members who truly believe that Obama is a communist. No joke, they actually believe this.

My grandmother also believes that Obama is a Muslim and sympathetic to ISIS.

I wouldn't marry someone that didn't generally agree with me politically. My wife is progressive and rational, and I love her for it. That said if I was married to a close-minded conservative I would swear off discussing politics as well.

As to the OP though I'm in the same boat. All of my family with the exception of my brother, step-brother, and Mom are Republican conservatives. The large majority of my wife's family is also conservative. So suffice to say I try to avoid any and all political discussions when I'm with family. It would only result in harming our relationship, which I don't want.

Yeah, can't stand political talk with family or strangers. I live in Oklahoma and I'm pretty liberal so I keep that shit to myself whenever possible. There's no winning here and some of the more crazy ones get violently angry at the existence of liberals and all the evil things they stand for (climate change legislation, gun laws, gay rights, being decent to minorities).

They have only the best facts. Look at the success that their facts are enjoying. Tremendous, just really, really tremendously successful facts.

Having political discussions with anyone is tiring and usually disappointing. 99% of the time it's just people bitching one way or another about things they don't really understand.
