Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition PC Performance/Comparison Thread

Thanks for taking the time to do this Qassim!

My PC could run the original at about 45-60 fps with just a few things turned down a notch. So I knew coming into this that it would be a waste of time to upgrade. I was excited about the PS4 version at first until I heard that its 30fps with some drops here and there. That's honestly unacceptable. Not saying SD looks bad at all, but there's no excuse to not have this locked at 60 on the PS4. Considering it's $69 here in Canada, there's no way I'm getting this. As much as I love the game I can't bring myself to support that.

You mean you guys aren't impressed by the increased bra density? D:

Would only get this if there is an Occupy Central DLC, where the police and the triads work together to beat up student protestors and maintain 'harmony' in society.

Anyone have any data on how many developers were involved in making the DE and how long it took? Just curious from a budget perspective, and how it compares to making a new game or new DLC from a cost/profit view.

Does that stupid online mode work in this version? I have never been able to sign into it in the original release.

That is actually an improvement (not that anyone should buy it). The markets felt so empty before.

Some more comparisons that might show the density difference a bit better.

And all I see is "more realistic" pollution haze everywhere.

The original seems way better. The lighting is more pronounced and the texture work on the road in one of the shots was more detailed. Doesn't seem its worthy of a double dip, honestly. Running the original with HD textures just fine at 70-80 fps average.

Probably going to need a video to properly show off the differences but right now I'm not seeing any reason to spend the £10 upgrade fee.

edit - also just looked on Amazon and the PC version is £13.85 while the console versions are £37.85 lol That is quite the price hike!

Performance takes a hit from the vanilla game. Had to lower Shadow Resolution and SSAO to normal instead of high in order to maintain 60FPS at 1080p. The original let me crank everything to max except for AA, which I set to high instead of extreme. Also, did the original's cutscenes run at 30fps? Seems to be the case here. World density is much higher than before. Way more NPCs in the night market, the roads are also more populated. Fog effect is pretty cool too. Some of the new faces look weird, some look more detailed. Took some screens from Youtube videos.

I think I will jump in on this just for the DLC alone. $15 for all the DLC and some tweaks here and there? I'm okay with this.

eh. its different enough for an excuse for me to replay this. I also feel a tiny bit bad for pretty much buying all the dlc and the game for like $15.

Any noticeable 'balance changes'? Does driving feel the same? counter timing window?

Seems they've added some physics to certain clothing items in cutscenes, like necklaces and jackets moving around.. Haven't noticed much in gameplay yet.

Think I'm just gonna stick with vanilla after looking at all these shots. Plus I didn't really mind much of the dlc all that great anyways

It looks like (hugely) improved ambient occlusion is the biggest difference. I think I'll be content with my still unplayed OG version.

This looks good enough to warrant an upgrade for me (russian price).

I also didn't have most of the dlc.

Thank you for the shots.

Really hope the head tracking mod still works...

Gamma/contrast looks worse. Still crushed looking but lighter. SSAO should've been replaced by HBAO+.

But really, it's hard to tell the immediate differences without exact 1:1 comparisons (That aren't super low res and/or compressed). Un matched comparisons make it more difficult to tell.

But can see differences in the models and crowd density and what not in shots shown.

Textures still look like could use a bit more

eh i would upgrade for 5$ but for 15$ seems like a stretch. Not much of a difference except performance gets cut in half. Good deal for people that never bought it though.

Got the original version for like 3 bucks so it wouldn't hurt me too badly to upgrade. Still, it's crazy that they thought to charge for this.

I love Sleeping Dogs like a son but aside from the higher NPC density (which does address a somewhat common complaint people had with the game, despite it not being any worse than other games besides Assassin's Creed), I'm not sure why you'd spend money on this unless you don't already own the three story DLCs.

Doesn't seem worth it on PC with how much worse performance is. But it's a good buy if you're console only.

What a huge let down. This should be a free (OPTIONAL) patch. Literally, the biggest change is now the frame rate shits the bed. I'd rather have a few less cars or people around and keep the silky smoothness as high as possible. What the hell is the point of this on PC?!

Can we assume that this is not another Human Revolution: Directors cut situation where they took the 1.00, un-patched version of the game with all the bugs and issues?

I hope so. At least there are SOME graphical changes in this that aren't worse..yet.

For every step forward DEHR:DC made, it took 3 graphical steps back.

I feel like I should buy this anyway. Since I got the original so cheap.

Hm, so this includes a slight bump in object density, virtually no discernible change to the other visuals, includes all 24 (!) previously released DLC items and has a decrease in performance?

I'm not quite sure if the inclusion of all the DLC is worth the small upgrade fee given the apparent performance hit. This is a great deal for those who didn't get the game before though.

So don't buy it? I'd much rather it come to PC and people just choose not to buy it than it not come to PC and those that do want to buy it can't, like Tomb Raider.

Hmmm are the lighting changes just some sort of contrast tweak to not get such squashed blacks and saturated colours?

Square has been pulling this ever so slight upgrade crap for years in Japan, but I'm torn about whether it's good or bad at the end of the day.

On the one hand, it's not much of an upgrade for Sleeping Dogs or Tomb Raider, and I won't be picking up either.

On the other hand, they're not gouging customers like they do in Japan. Deus Ex was a steal for $5 if you had the original, and I really do like some of the extras they added in that version like the commentary and the lighting effects that had previously only been featured in the Missing Link DLC.

It looks like the Definitive Edition vendors have poor sales or they are carrying too much stock. The normal edition's stalls are sold out. You would think it would be reversed with the extra pedestrian traffic. A shame really. I pray for the definitive edition vendor families with the holidays coming up.

The ambient occlusion change is huge. Fog is cool but not really needed.

The performance hit is probably coming from the increase in object and people density.

I remember the original having some jarring LOD while driving in some areas so I'm glad they improved the draw distance. I'm still not paying for something that should have been included in a free patch; Hard Reset did it right with its free upgrade.
