Sleeping Dogs PC Performance Thread

Then that's not all maxed out.

Umm.. Yes it is. It doesn't matter if I left it at no limit or limited the fps at 30, the game is still maxed out but I limit my fps to achieve a more stable fps. I'd rather play at a solid 30fps than having the framerate jump between 35-45 all the time.

To say that the game is not maxed out just because I limit the fps is silly, the game doesn't look any worse because I do that and it's a personal preference if the game is playable with that fps. Since I play with a controller I don't need that super responsive aim (heck, you barely aim at all in this game) and therefore 60fps is not that important.

Yeah I'm using it. I have it set to ultra and it does a decent job at clearing up most of the jaggies, but it would definitely work better if you could completely remove the default FXAA from the game

Wait how? did you use the dx10/11 one? That's what I did since I THIIIINK Sleeping Dogs is dx11 or 10 on PC and no changes were seen. Oh god I should have tried the dx9 one, if it turns out its a dx9 game I'm gonna slap myself.

It's a DX10/11 game, so the DX9 SMAA files won't work. Here's a comparison:

Do a comparison with High, it looks good with the SSAA and it's the setting most people use.

Personally I think the AA implementation in Sleeping Dogs is absolute crap. Looks bad no matter what setting I use despite the frame loss with high and extreme settings.

Anyway, here's a High in-game AA and SMAA Ultra comparison:

The problem is that no matter what you have to combine the SMAA with whatever AA is already being used, and in my experience it doesn't look super great when you combine SMAA with MSAA or any other kind of AA.

Edit: One more comparison, showing the Extreme AA setting vs. the Normal AA setting + SMAA:

Extreme AA:

Normal AA + SMAA:

I think it's lose-lose, really. The best results are going to come from downsampling.

Edit: Alright, one final comparison showing Extreme AA and Normal AA + SMAA, both downsampled from 1440p:

Thanks for the effort on all the shots.

But I have to disagree with you on High/Extreme looking like "crap". I guess everyone has different tolerances on AA, I don't think there's much difference between SSAA and SMAA. Looks fine to me.

I read that general AA thread on GAF, and some people are seriously picky and anal (no offense).

Absolutely, opinions differ wildly on AA but if you think whatever method you're using looks fine then there's really no problem.

The high res textures are completely breaking this game for me. They literally stop steaming in and when I reach that point I fall off into nothing. Sometimes it'll stop cutscenes from loading too. I don't understand why? It runs perfectly with them on then just...stops loading them. I'll switch them off and instantly the textures and land loads up again.

Now I have to keep them off if I want to even play. :(

Have you tried verifying the game cache in steam?

For what it's worth, I had a similar issue with GTAIV until I updated my video drivers.

It says 1 failed to be verified and is now downloading a 3.4gb file. I'm guess that's the HD pack. It mustn't have installed properly the first time. I hope this fixes it. Thanks for the tip.

Sounds like you run out of video memory. What card do you have?

This game microstuttering is driving me nuts.

Barely noticing it when walking user the 305.53 drivers, but driving....uggggggggh. Windowed or not doesn't seem to make a difference. Tried the 305.67 one and it was even worse.

570 GTX here. Something I'm missing here or we just have to bide our time

What problems?

Well look at the benchmarks I posted with normal AA. It actually goes backwards with 3 cards, and the minimum is lower. Sometimes it shoots over 200fps, then drops back down to lower than 1 card. That's what happens with CPU bottlenecking, I've seen in happen before with Saints Row the Third. These kind of games are always constrained with high-end cards. It scales better with extreme AA (because there isn't as much of a CPU bottleneck) but still no where near 3x. And Sethos talked about the problems with SLI, apparently you need to adjust settings or something.

I haven't messed with SLI. What do you mean considering I can take screenshots?

Can't take any screenshots when SLI is up and running, they turn out black in every recording software. Only thing I've seen working is PrntScrn in windowed mode.

I have the XML file open ready to do some tweaking.

Does anyone have a list of values for the different settings?

For example:

<AAQuality>0</AAQuality>
<SSAO>0</SSAO>

That's maxed out no Vsync, two options in the graphical menu = 0 and 1, three options = 0, 1 and 2.

However I suggest turning down <AAQuality>2</AAQuality> to 1 max

However I don't believe there's any "hidden" settings, like a magical 3 or 4.

Both of those settings (and more) are in the game itself. Why would you need to change it in a XML file?

It's funny to think that you've developed such an incredibly AA spotting expertise... with the end result that you're annoyed by most implementations of it.

Every one of those screenshots look good enough to me. Certainly, there are other factors that reduce the image quality before we start to consider the jagginess on the screen, especially at that resolution.

But to each his own! My personal rule of thumb is to care, but to not care so much that my ability to enjoy the game I'm playing is impacted by less than perfect max performance.

After all, I know the game could always look better through a variety of factors - and the biggest factor towards how good a game looks will always be the art and design of the game, which sadly can't be remedied for most games.

Anybody tried an FPS limiter for the stuttering? Using one set to 60 fixed the issue in Skyrim for me. Different game I know.

I swear, after patching to 1.4 on the PC, my game looks different than it did before. And not for the better. I double-checked all of my settings, and they are all correct and exactly how I had them before the patch. But now the game just doesn't look as good. Anyone else experience this?

Anyone else having trouble getting Fraps to work with the game?

edit: lol nevermind, I just figured out that it was SMAA Injector that doesn't work with Fraps.

Haha.

I think only the downsampled shots look good in the comparison above. With Normal AA + SMAA it's even playable.

I get stuttering besides having FRAPS showing constant 60FPS. It's pretty bad while running f.e. - is that a known issue? 560TI with latest drivers installed, graphics settings don't affect this.

Chiming in to say thank you thabiz. I'm fairly certain (touch wood) the 305.67 revision has cleaned up 99% of my day time stuttering. I get very, very slight irregular stutter for a single frame every now and then, but it's the usual game jank I expect. The consistent day time stutter has otherwise been completely fixed, at least for the areas I tested it in. I still get a FPS drop, as expected, from the shadows/lighting, but no more stuttering.

ugh, FINE, i'll install beta drivers world

Strange. Both are working together fine for me. Both up to date?

SMAA is definitely working too. I've used the toggle button, and clearly see it going on and off.

There's no way to get it to turn FXAA quality to High without also using SSAA, huh? I'm downsampling with in-game AA set to Normal, but I'd love to just turn it off and inject SMAA with nothing else.

Just popping in to say that I think those dev 305.67 drivers do the trick for stuttering. I need to play more to make sure but it feels good so far.

That's what I'm using... no fix for me.

Any other tips for fixing this? Stuff starts looking way bad in the city area even running at 60 FPS.
