Sleeping Dogs PC Performance Thread

I have an Alienware m17x laptop (i7-3630QM | 16GB RAM | 2GB GTX 680M | x2 500GB 7200RPM HD), and the game runs great on High. Noticeable slowdown at Ultra, but still playable. I don't run fraps, so I can't tell you what kind of FPS I'm getting. Sorry. :p

Interesting, the new patch seems to have sorted my stuttering issue and also fixed the invisible mountains! I am using Nvidia drivers version 310.54 and I realized I was forcing triple buffered vsync with D3DOverrider. I don't want to prematurely declare it fixed - i'm going to monitor it over a few days, a few PC restarts etc.. but i've got a good feeling about it. Well done, United Front!

Hmmm. 3D seems to be a bit odd.

Anyway, does anyone know how to get SSAO working in Sleeping Dogs? I have a Geforce card that supports the feature, but in the control panel it says that the application doesn't support it. Are ppl in this thread forcing it somehow?

It's an option in the game, you don't need to force it. Comes in two quality settings: normal and high.

This game is so awesome. Finished everything I wanted to including the story @ 27 hours according to Steam. Definitely my favorite this year. My system is just ok but I was able to run it at settings pleasing to me once I capped the FPS at 30. Stuck with the basic AA, basic shadows, but turned the 3D depth or whatever on max and also turned World Density to Extreme.

In short, this is a great PC port, and this is the only game this year where you can do a huge jump flip on a boat while shooting other bad guys in boats with an SMG while still driving your boat while being chased by cop cars over water.

I'm getting a black screen whenever I start the game up. I'm running Windows 8 and have an AMD 7850 with the newest drivers. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Ahahahah...

Steam sale redemption is upon us ladies and gentlemen.

If I download the hi-res texture pack does that just add options to my menu? In other words, if I try it and my PC can't handle it well, is it easy to bypass/uninstall?

I just started the game, and looks great. Generally runs well enough, but the frame rate isn't affected much by changing most settings so it looks like my 3570k is the bottleneck. I plan to OC it soon, hopefully that will bring the minimum FPS up.

I think you can tweak the settings to get a better framerate. Here's what I get with a CPU thats 2 generations older CPU (i7 930) my GPU is slightly better and I'm downsampling from 2560 x 1440 to 1920x1080:

Turn down AA and SSAO a notch. They're only for super duper high-end rigs like Witcher 2'ss Ubersampling.

Hey does anyone else have issues with the controls in this game? Played a bit and they're seriously bugging me. They seem to buffer input up to a point and then stop accepting anymore input for a little while.

Turn AA to High instead of extreme. You should gain about 15-25fps. That processor is absolutely not a bottleneck, it is the same one I have.

I found the combat would stop flowing at times, that what you mean?

Happens occasionally in combat where i'll do a string of attacks and then no more keyboard inputs will be accepted, but here's a better example. Sometimes holding down W to accelerate and it keeps accelerating. But I take my finger off W and push S to break and it doesn't. It just keeps accelerating for a bit before eventually accepting the S input. This seems to happen everywhere but not at all times. Like once in the menus I held the down arrow which navigates, and it when I stopped pressing it instead of stopping immediately it just kept input the down arrow command for a second or two before accepting any new inputs.

The combat punishes you (much harder than in Batman) when you press 'Y' (Counter) when there is nothing to counter.

Got nothing to do with it, see above.

Game runs pretty damn well for me. Everything maxxed out except for AA (actually running it at Normal, because I didn't see a lick of difference between them except for my framerate). Pretty much constant 60fps at 1080p. The benchmark says it dipped down to around 48 here and there, but I couldn't see it. i7-2600K/GTX-680.

Combat is definitely not Batman, despite the similarities on paper. Coming right off of Arkham City, I'm getting my ass kicked here.. hehe.

Sadly you'll learn to own everyone very soon, it's got the assassin's creed curse. That penalty mentioned doesn't do anything to deter you from using counter all the time since it's so effective and the timing so easy to get right. Although unlike Assassin's Creed you basically use it inbetween constant bashing since counters alone wouldn't do enough damage. But it really would have been better with proper defensive and evasion moves rather than such an overpowered counter. The rest of the dynamics are pretty decent with the 3-4 different types of enemies but that just ruins any skill factor it could have had.

It's still satisfying to kick asses but still. I don't get why so many melee games ruin themselves like that. AC, Red Steel 2, this...

Just chiming in. I've been addicted to this game all weekend and it's been running fantastically on my XFX HD6950 2GB @ 2560x1440, all on high, MSAA, and with the high res texture pack. No tweaking necessary. I did lock it at 30FPS though to prevent stutter and save some electricity, though.

Edit: FWIW if I remove the limiter I score an average 48fps on the benchmark.

If you lower those settings a little, and run at a solid 60, you'll probably be way more impressed. The visuals will still absolutely amazing, but it'll be move smooth as butter as well.

Holy Hell. Benchmarked this game, max settings without the HD texture pack installed and I get worse framerate than Crysis 2 maxed in DX11 with the HD texture pack... Normal?

Will the HD texture pack effect my performence much with a 2GB card?

Just want to second what others are saying. At extreme settings your GPU is the bottleneck, not your processor. My OC'ed Q6600 gets a better benchmark score at the same settings. Why? It is equipped with a 680 rather than a 670. If it was CPU bound your score would easily beat mine.

Set the Anti-aliasing the high and not extreme. Extreme is basically their "lol try this in 5 years" setting.

Thanks to this thread, I was able to smooth out my setting in the game.

... but after I had beaten the main story. lol =/

Such a beautiful game though, the city is just beautiful when you are driving through it on a bike, at night, in the rain.

Yeah, it looks amazing for an open world game, even on my average rig with high texture pack I've got decent performance. But driving a bike in this game is terrible.

These open world games, SR3 included, seem to make my GTX570 feel its age. Getting framerate dips into the 30s in some locations, especially around Golden Koi.

How big of a performance hit is the high-res pack? The default textures look muddy as hell.

That's weird, maybe you're forcing extreme AA option. I have GTX460 with only 768MB and with everyting set to high, with high-res pack, except AA set to normal and I get average framerate close to 50fps.

I play this on a laptop with a 650M and am surprised at how well it performs. Can have the visuals fairly high with the hd textures on, with very smooth gamepaly. I play at a lower res to play it safe though, might set it on 1080p next time to see the difference.

It runs much better in my experience than a game like saints row 3, despite it looking so much better and having more stuff going on on-screen usually.

Well I just dialed AA down to Normal, and I'm getting 60fps steady. Between additional AA or 60fps, I'll take 60fps every time.

Unless your laptop screens native resolution is 1080p, I'd recommend just running it at your native res.

I've got an identical rig and mine runs fine with the HD pack :-/
