So basic brawl w/ anyone is just CPUs and it makes you think its online? ;) j/k

This is pretty interesting I would rather a CPU sub in than a match end because someone lags out or disconnects.

So you can't select characters you have not unlocked online but your oponent can if they have? :lol awesome

megaton spoilerage if you have not unlocked everything yet. :lol

Well thought out update tonight.

Although, I can't help but be a bit disappointed, as there is no 'no items' ...WHOA

Hold the phone, contradictory update:

Isn’t that simple? You don’t have to bother with any settings. You just choose characters and stages.

Oh, but you can. Look at the top right of this picture.

wi-fi04_071207d-l.jpg

Two boxes. One for stage, one for items!

I am now double plus excited for online mode.

You know, I wonder what would happen in regards to how what would happen is someone goes online with no unlocked stuff against someone who has unlocked stuff.

Looks like players can only choose what they have and not what anyone has unlocked.

So... is there a vote on whether or not to switch to a stock match too?

Also.. is there a way to just play 1 on 1 battles? :/

Also I might be retarded: but what is the '40' above DK's head for? (I'm really tired so forgive me if it's super obvious....)

Ugh, Nintendo's arachic online approach shines through again

umm, this is how a lot of matchmaking works. You don't really get to choose options, they are "premade" and you choose what type you want to play and you hop in.

Some good info, actually. A CPU replacing a character is a nice touch, although the random online is similar to fighting high level CPUs anyway.

The bottom part is the best though, it's almost like something Sakurai would leave for another update but then just went "Fuck it." and revealed it. Unlocking most characters through the subspace emissary is pretty big, and with what he said about the characters being spoiled through the online and the internet I wonder what he'll be doing with character updates from now on.

I thought this update was going to suck when I first saw it, but it's really not all that bad. It's nice that we're at the point where the Brawl screens are looking like real "in action" shots, with the interface unobscured and the characters in alternate colors.

I have to say, though... the menu interface is seeming really gaudy. It seems filled with lots of big buttons presented two or three at a time. Backing out after getting into a mode is probably quite a few button presses. (Although Melee had a "to top menu" button shortcut, I assume this will have the same.)

-The close of the week has brought the 21st game mode. Game modes retain their second place status and are by now very, very close to overtaking the character profiles that have been at 23 since October 25th.

-Of the past four weeks, three had two game modes each. (And the other week still had a game mode, but only one of them.) Incidentally, two weeks ago we had two how to plays in the same week as well as two final smashes, and last week we had two music updates. If you're in the arena of expecting only one type of each update per week, you should probably get out now. :P

-31 days without a character, and 34 days of updates until the Japanese release date.

He doesn't make it clear if all the items are randomly on/off or if it takes a random player's item preferences. It'll be amazing if it's a random person's item preferencs. I'll just turn all mine off and I'll sometimes get games without items =O

I'm pretty sure the computer just picks each item individually at random, it doesn't care what any players' presets are.

The Spanish site has a funny way of saying the part about the items, BTW:

Spanish Sakurai said:
La diosa Fortuna también será la encargada de escoger los objetos que aparecerán en el escenario.

It means, "The goddess of Fortune will also be in charge of choosing the objects that will appear in the scenario."

Is this a Megaton?

no, but it is a good update.

a megaton would be something along the lines of online coop for adventure mode.

and are gaf people in japan gonna make an effort to avoid character spoilers? or does no one care if things like that get spoiled?

For matchmaking, yes.

For friend battles, no.
I think it's going to be the same way they do the stages. You set your preferred kind of match (probably limited to a certain time and a certain stock so people don't do, like, 99 stock or something), and it randomly chooses one person's settings. Same with items, you set them up the way you like them, and it randomly chooses one person's item settings. So if two people have all items on high, and two people have items off, you have a 50/50 chance between the two.

That would be really good if it takes a random persons item preference. It would add so much variety.

Unlocking the characters through Subspace Embassey? That might mean the character battles to unlock hidden characters will flow smoothly with the subspace plot

It takes so long to get connected on Nintendo Wifi (at least on DS) for a 2 or 3 minute match... I won't complain, since I doubt I'll ever use this mode, but that is kind of lame. Nice move on the CPU filling in for players who drop out. Again, I hate seeing such a great game hindered by such gimped online features. I just don't understand why communication is out of the picture, sell me a $20 mic nintendo, I'm a consumer whore, I'll eat it up!

thats what I was thinking.

I mean, im sure another reason why a lot of the major hidden characters wont be revealed is because they are part of the "plot" of the SE.

Or it could mean lot of mundane retreading through the story mode...which worries me

Also, I believe that secret characters are still not going to be revealed on the Dojo.

You know, I've been thinking about that, and it occurs to me that that's probably true, and that Sakurai probably intends both Sonic and Snake to be starting characters. He may have originally intended them to be hidden, but it seems like he may have changed his mind. That gives us 23 starters, and the character select screen has them in groups of 6. If they're keeping the Random button as a separate button, then that likely means no more character reveals on the Dojo. If they're not, then they have one more starter slot to fill most likely, which means only one more character reveal on the Dojo.

It also means, if there are any other 3rd party characters, we likely won't know about them until after the game is out, since they will most probably be hidden characters.

I hope so because I don't want to play through the game 15 or even 20 times to unlock characters.
I'll make my brother do it :P

I've always figured one of the SE Boss characters would be an unlockable after you beat him (probably Ganondorf). It makes too much sense for them not to do it

Mind explainin the logic there

Just look at the beginning screen of your DS. And all your Nintendo videogames post 2004. They all have that warning about seizures. Nintendo got sued for their videogames giving some kid a seizure. Not Sony, not Microsoft, so Only Nintendo has to put that warning before their games. It sucks but Nintendo is just a target for lawsuits so they have to be extra careful.

I wonder how many is "most"?
With any luck, everyone except Jigglypuff, who I can earn in less than 15 minutes through Classic. :D

The Wii console is trying to connect in earnest! And it succeeds!
Why do I find this so amusing?
Because it sounds like something straight from Earthbound.

You can earn most characters by playing through Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. For those of you who look forward to those encounters, I recommend you clear this mode before playing Basic Brawl.
Think about it: if Sakurai wanted us to "look forward to those encounters" and finish Subspace Emissary before going online, then why would he show us unlockables on the site?
Good point.

You raise good questions, and if these things can't be done then it's time for me to play NeoGAF and only NeoGAF 100% of the time. >_>

Nintendo's even been sued post-warning. And lost. Which is why we got more warnings.

So this will be my schedule:
- Finish Classic Mode and unlock Jigglypuff
- Finish Subspace Emissary
- Finish Event Mode
- Play a few matches online
- Call friends and tell them I've unlocked everything and to get their asses over here

You know what mines similar, but I have to buy brand new GC controllers first :P

Ya know, with the multitude of options, and gameplay choices that are change-able in SSBB, there's no way Sakurai could please everyone UNLESS, he used "lobbies". However, lobbies just wouldn't work well in SSBB. Why? So many people would be looking for a game setup that they like they'd either make their own lobby or rare join one. (except for Final Destination/no items lobbies :p)

But anyways, people need to take a step back and see that this is probably the easiest and most feasible way of providing a fun experience of random matchmaking for SSBB. If you want to play 99 stock matches with high pokeballs/assist trophies, then I'm sure you can do that in friend games

Worst logic ever...MS hasnt gotten sued yet for online. And I think all games have those seizure warnings in their manuals

I really like the idea of a CPU taking over, but like Jiggly said, hopefully there's an option where you can predetermine what level they'll be at, cause I'll only play with 9s. :)

Nintendo lost, despite the presence of those manual warnings. I know, the world is dumb. I have no idea how they could have lost such a case after the amazing things their legal team did with Donkey Kong and Tetris

perfectchaos007 said:
Yeah but if Nintendo had this approach they would be.... getting sued. Trust me.

fixd

No. There is nothing to support that theory. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo. Everyone gets sued for different things. This is just Nintendo being lazy and not wanting to go through the hassel

I prefer it if we dont know about hidden characters. It wouldnt be any fun if they revealevd everything on the site before the game is released.

Microsoft has had publicity regarding XboxLive and those annoying bastards who can do nothing but spout curse words, derogatory terms and racial slurs all the time.

Yeah, I think that is how it'll work. I wonder if you'll be able to switch game modes? I would expect Time mode to be standard for random battle play, but the ability to make game a bit longer wouldn't hurt. Two minutes is so short!

Also, I wonder if you can do random battles with less than four people, or if the game only starts when four have joined. Hmmm.
