Yes, that makes perfect sense - I'm not sure how the guitar was used in DK64, but Diddy's rap was his end level animation in DKC2.

Since we're talking about DK, does anyone want Dixie or K.Rool as playable characters? K.Rool seems to be popular in Brawl communities, but even as a huge fan of the DKC games, I just saw him as a poor man's Bowser. Sorry, can't help it =X

The guitar was just yet another "lock and key" mechanic, one of many that was thrown in to Donkey Kong 64 to balloon out the gameplay and make it seem much more involved than it actually was. All the Kongs had their own musical instruments to do it with... and I believe Donkey Kong's was the bongos.

In hindsight, that would've made a better Final Smash since it would've fit in with Donkey Kong's Final Smash being musical too.

Also I wouldn't expect Diddy Kong or K. Rool to be playable characters since we already have our main characters for the Donkey Kong series here... But I expect K. Rool to be a boss character in the Subspace Emissary.

Well Diddy Kong didn't get an entire franchise dedicated to him using his guitar like DK did with the bongos. Donkey Konga is popular in japan, in fact they are still making them (just not releasing them in the US).

Now, if Sakurai really IS reading this thread and gets an idea to make a Guitar Hero clone featuring Diddy Kong with Rock-remixes of Nintendo songs..


..then by all means, please go ahead :D
 
oh, I was so close. Predicted a final smash, but the wrong character... :/

Anyway, good update. I like Diddy and seeing him in action is always cool.

DK's final smash is a nice nod towards Donkey Konga and Jungle Beat, Diddy's is inspired by the N64 game where those were his primary weapons. Makes sense to me.

Eh, I hope not. That would probably be the most anti climactic final smash ever if that were to happen.
Besides the chef thing is funny and makes sense even if he's never really done that in a game.


And while we're noting our favorite final smashes, I'd like to say that mine is easily Pit's. It's like a whole new layer of Kid Icarus fan service when he does his final smash, and it's really something that he did in the original game too.

I wonder how the Chef attack will work...

One big pot that sucks the others in? Hm, most of the other final smashes can be avoided, but not Kirby's if it's like the attack in Kirby Superstar. It can't be too damaging, then, to balance that.

From the old Smash video it seems like he can only fit one person in it. Just speculation though.
 
Dark World in Smash is going to be awesome.

But what I'm really looking forward to is the remix of the New Super Mario Bros. theme, that's the best Mario theme ever imo.

But I'd also like to state that.. while I'm not really that picky about sound quality in games, I'm still really bummed that the overall midi quality seems like a big downgrade from Melee.
 
What's the world coming to when people are disappointed to see a monkey flying around in a jetpack shooting two guns at once in their videogames... I weep for the future.

I don't really get the dislike for Diddy Kong. He's a good sidekick, fits DK very well, had his own N64 spin-off game which was pretty damn awesome... I can't fathom where the hate could come from.

Donkey Kong purists?

I don't hate him at all, but I'm not that into him either. I think he might get some hate though from his association with Rare, and the other horribly designed Kong characters they introduced. Basically he looks fine, even thoug a monkey wearing a baseball cap and a tank top doesn't make much sense, but the rest of the Kong bunch looks like pure ass assaulting your eyes.

So he sort of paved the way for that, hence the hate. Diddy Kong Racing was amazing though.

I loved Rare on the SNES and the N64, so I don't associate a lot of negative feelings with them. The DKC games were among the best platformers of their generation. And while some of the other Kongs are definitely victims of 90's fashion crimes, I don't think there's anything wrong with Diddy's design.

Same here. He looks pretty cool actually, but a lot of people like the old Donkey Kong better. There's a bit of a backlash against the newer Rare design, and the other characters.
(I personally think it's lame that in the Rare games Cranky Kong is supposed to be a geriatric original Donkey Kong).

No, of course not. I don't like the term 'clones' as it implies that they're playing 100% alike, which isn't true at all. All clones were noticeably different from their counterpart.

That said, I do prefer unique characters.
 
Is there any good reason why all the old characters and stages can't be in brawl other than time? It would be cool to play in saffron city and hyrule castle again, just with new characters.

I've never understood how someone could actively hate the other Kongs. Maybe the DK64 Kongs reeked of "shitty friend", but how could anyone hate Diddy, Dixie, Cranky and Funky when they were staples of AAA games?

I have a feeling that people are just jumping on the anti-Rare bandwagon. How can anyone play DKC2 and them say what Rare did with the series is bad? Cor blimey. While Dixie's look is a bit...odd in this day and age, she is one of the best Nintendo heroines (even though that isn't really saying much)


It's funny that there are people who are more attatched to Stanley the Bugman or DK Jr. Lol.

Rena from Star Ocean 2 (PS1) and Star Ocean Blue Sphere (GBC), but this particular version is the Star Ocean EX (anime) design. Oddly enough, in the whole 35-hour game, she's there from the beginning but there are maybe two moments where she ever gets mad at anything in the whole 35-hour game. (50 with bonus dungeon, but nothing really happens in there storyline-wise.) I guess in the show she's probably more varied. >_>



Oh, and unless they somehow mangle SO: Second Evolution (remake) when it comes out, any of you PSP owners/future owners in here had better buy it. >_> The battle system is like Tales except simpler, which makes sense since Star Ocean 1 was developed by some people who left Namco after making ToP. And Motoi Sakuraba tends to be the composer for both series.
And the characters all develop independent affection for each other via town skits, and the AI reacts accordingly so they'll go and fight to protect their friends/love interests, or get mad for stat boosts when the others die, etc. And there are multiple item creation systems in place--for accessories, for armor, for weapons, for machines (battle items), for books (can be published so you'll get royalties every now and then), and probably some other things. And there are like three dozen skills you can learn and toggle on or off.
Man, what a great and deep game SO2 was.

Well, 20 characters have been revealed so far. And since Sakurai's said that he won't reveal any hidden characters before launch (which may not be true, but whatever,) we can probably say there will be more than 20 characters. Beyond that we know pretty much zilch.
