So is Wii U currently the best second console?

My 5 years old PC can't run the newer multiplats but is good for those special indie titles (Undertale); then my PS4 gets me the console games I wanted the most this year (BB), then my WiiU is always on when I have friends over (MK, SSMB).

I have no room for a Xbone in there, but the 3 others are all very effective.

I've been unexpectedly feeling this way about my PS4. Considering the 4 and xbone are cheap gaming PC's architecturally, the need to own them vs investing that money in a decent desktop has been waning for me.

While I used to (and still sort of do) sneer at Nintendo's luddite tech, they're still providing one of the only unique 'living room gaming' experiences out there.

Honestly, the biggest shock for me about the WiiU, is how much I use off-TV play. SO wants to watch some shit? Cool, I can keep playing. I play Mario Maker every morning while I drink coffee and watch the news. It's amazing.

I just wish the WiiU had 3rd party support. Then I wouldn't have ever considered a PS4. Oh well, it's the Dreamcast of this generation. Fantastic, innovative games that no one played.

Wii U is far and away the best console this gen.
PC and Wii U all the way, yo. Then you get pretty much every game possible.

PC + PS4 + Vita is the true trifectar

The price of the console and the games holds me back from getting a wii u. £30 for games over 2 years old smh.

Thankfully that's not what this thread is based on at all.

On the contrary, people saying that they have the best exclusive titles and therefore the best lineup are saying exactly that.

2015, they released Splatoon, Mario Maker, Yoshi's Wooly World and Xenoblade X as high profile titles

No matter how much you may like those titles, that's all you got, for basically an entire year. How is that such a great year that I want to claim it the best lineup of all consoles? Why do people say things like "it has a ton of great titles"? I'm pretty sure I have every single high profile WiiU title, and I still have more PS4 titles from this year than I do the WiiU's entire lifespan, and I buy most multiplat games on PC, not on PS4.

Lack of 3rd Party games is the main why i would never consider buying a wii u

If i need just one platform ill rather buy a Ps4 or xb1 or pc
If he also plays on a decent PC the wii U can be a valid primary console option. It's my setup :]

Well, that's kind of the most important factor to consider when deciding what to play.

Also, the whole "I guess it's a good system if you're a Nintendo fanboy" nonsense is getting old.

Not for me because it really sometimes ( if not most) is true. The aspect of "loving" nintendo franchise past a casual point is someone who highly identifies with their franchises. I'm very passive with Nintendo because none of their games hit me on an emotional or memorable level that you normally, and most of the time, only see with hardcore nintendo fans. It's not a lie.

You can play a nintendo game and think it's amazing and fun and that's it. But i'm not dedicated to buying everything, playing everything especially on day one, or even watching directs oozing over the latest and greatest. So, i do feel like there is a gap between someone who's hardcore and someone who's very casual with their offerings. I'm the latter and that's why i don't think so.

My taste are different and while the games are fun as they should be...it's just not the second best to me. Basically, i've had fun with more games on 3 different platforms this year and the year before that than I did with one which is Nintendo. That's it. To each their own.

It has a few great games, the console itself is a piss take though. The basic version has next to no storage, the gamepad has pathetic battery life, the possibility of external storage is limited due to wierd restrictions, it has no optical out options for headsets so with the new xenoblade i cant play using headphones unless i play on the pad only. The console is a joke in this day and age. Some of the games are essential imo so i put up with it though.

because it's a great year and depending on your tastes it's the best lineup of all consoles

and because it has a ton of great titles

pretty obvious answers, actually

Exclude the overlap with the other 2 consoles, they both still offer me more than I want out of the Wii U.

Animal Crossing may change that if it ever happened, but I hope that the next AC will be a handheld game (because that's where AC belongs).

What does that even mean? Like PS and Xbox games aren't designed to be fun?

Yes sûre, but Nintendohas that sparkle maybe. Sometime I feel like games like witcher 3 are made so deep it feels like a burden more than à game.

Or répétitive gameplay mechanic that Ask the player to collect tons of crap like most of ubisoft game...

I'm stricly talking about game mechanics that feels like a chore, things that make you say oh god I don't feel like doing this but I'll as a completitionist.

Really sounds like you just don't know a lot of the Wii Us titles....at all. Grabbed my Wii U around Thanksgiving, already have 9 titles and many more I know I want to get. That said, people have different game tastes.

Sure, a few people are saying that but most aren't and that's not what this thread is about. The argument is being made that Wii U is a great secondary console.

That's fine and not unreasonable for the most part but you implied earlier that the Wii U is really only a good choice for Nintendo loyalists, which essentially means you can only like Wii U if you're a fanboy. And I disagree with that strongly.

For my tastes...

PC > XBO > PS4 > Cellphone > Wii U

With that said, I might own a Wii U before I get a PS4 simply based on Zelda.

If you like Nintendo games sure why not ? As for someone who doesn't care about Nintendo games at all anymore (besides maybe Zelda) PS4 is all I need this generation. Maybe a Vita if you want JRPG's and Remote play.

I bought a Wii U day one and I hate the console. It's actually the first nintendo console I bought day one ever in my life. I didn't sell it because I don't believe in that practice but since having it and buying it for that $250 price, I didn't get what I felt I was suppose to get from it and certainly not enough for it to be second best.

Other people value it differently and I feel like it's more personal. That's all.

For me: PS4 and Wii U for exclusives, and the PC for everything else.

edit: If I could only have PC + one console, it would probably be PS4 for upcoming games.

My WiiU is the only console I really use, but I'm not really into AAAs so I mean, taste is subjective. The PS4 games I'm into aren't out yet so we'll see if anything changes by then.

of course if it turns out that the NX is going to phase out the WiiU then IDK what to say

Why are some Nintendo fans obsessed with the idea that a Nintendo console can be the best secondary console to people? It's placement is entirely up to you.

As far as how I see it, I'm picking up one soon for Bayonetta and some Nintendo games. Which I'm sure I'll have a fun time with.

By an absolute country mile.

As an owner of a PC buying a PS4 of an Xone seems like a total waste to me. Best platform for both exclusives and multiplats is covered with the PC U combo.

Uhh no. Wii U only has a handful of exclusive titles that make the console appealing and the console is already being killed off by Nintendo. I use PS4 as my main and X1 as my secondary. X1 has already has a lot of great exclusives and has many more in the works. To top it off, it has a growing library of BC games, great online infrastructure, great account system, and it has the perfect second console service: EA access. I'd consider the Wii U as a third console if it ever gets to be $99.

I'm not really seeing any obsessed users here. Since this is a video game forum though, these types of discussions are interesting to have.

No, apart from Zelda I'm perfectly content with my decision of ignoring it this gen. I'm not a fan of Nintendo games and characters.

PS4 + X1 for me.

Playtime wise it's my third most played console after ps4 and 3ds.I have a mid range PC which only gets used for older games bought on sale

It's pretty much been that way for the last few generations. PC + Whatever Ninty Console is out covers most everything you would need in gaming.
Ninty Handheld being a nice follow-up to that.

That said, if I were to get one of the other consoles, PS4 would be the most interesting. I say this as someone who does have a 360. Xbox One just looks really really lame.

Only a handful? Do you even know the Wii U's game library? I suspected as much with people who said the Wii sucked too cause there's a lot of gems on that system. Already being killed off by Nintendo? No one even knows when the NX is going to be around. At all. So, Lolno. A lot of the positives you list for X1 are actually true of the Wii U too, so....yea. Really X1 has waaaay too much of an overlap with the PS4 to ever be worth anything.

Honestly, I'd prefer it even as a primary console. It gets a lot fewer games, but it's absolutely a case of quality over quantity.

I have PC, PS4 and Wii U. I use PS4 mainly for new releases and exclusives because I don't really want to spend much on digital games, Wii U for some Nintendo gems, and PC for cheap older games.

The Wii U is my primary console. It has the most games that I enjoy playing so far and I've bought well over a dozen. I've sunk hundreds of hours into it, and I dont even have Xenoblade X yet. And since I got an Xbox One for Halo 5 and Tomb Raider, I chose the X1 versions of some of the top third party games.

I'm gonna buy a PS4 next year but I dont see anything exclusive for it that appeals to me right now.
