So Sony underwhelmington, Nintendo underwhelmington, but MS delivers?

but Nintendo definitely did not make a strong case and WOW people with the Wii.

As much as I hate to agree with you, I do this time. Nintendo didn't wow me with wii, most games would have looked ugly at the GC E3 conference, and some of the new IPs were in fact pretty gimmicky imo. I didn't see anything that made me think "shit! wow, I've never seen that kind of game before, the wiimote is fantastic, this is going to own traditional gaming".

I like how Microsofts big announcement was that they wouldn't get GTA4 later than the PS3.

QFT and people hack into SONY for their CGI. But they had more realtime than MS. MS had very little new content on show and a few CGI bits. And no EA...

NINTENDO (funnier but more distressing) > SONY > MS

How about Lumines Live, the game that, according to GAF, never fucking was. Apparently, the 360 is actually an FPS fest.

*psst* It was actually the coup of the show. Don't tell anyone.

That's because you have to play the Wii to get it. Playing is believing according to Nintendo, now don't you think that might be why they have 27 playable games on the show floor?

What?!

You disagree? It was pretty blatant.

FFXIII, Lair, and MSG4 are clearly superior graphically to anything realtime that MS showed, and Lair is supposed to be a launch game, no?

Heavenly Sword was on par or better as well, and was demonstrably playable.

Seems they liked Nintendo's conference aside from Red Steel graphics. I thought it was Nintendo's best conference yet. It was very well put together and everything they presented fit their message. So consice, too. You could tell they only had the theater for an hour cuz they left a lot out of the presentation. Wish they had a little more time, but in a way it was good that they weren't allowed to drohne on like Sony

Yea, Nintendo's conference was a letdown just for the realization of just how ugly GC 1.5 actually is. When someone says Gamecube graphics, there's just a disconnect in my brain that automatically associates it with TWW, Metroid Prime, and RE4. Not fucking Dragon Ball Z Budokai.

MS did good just because I think basically two days ago everyone expected them to choke and grovel at Sony's feet. The fact Sony screwed up royally doesn't hurt them either. Plus it's great to see more XBLA, by far their biggest killer app.

But as been said, having good press conferences means jack shit. Having items displayed at said press conference available to download in high definition however rocks ass. MS succeeded at this E3 because it performed steadily in the face of a ton of FUD and reassured initial buyers and those interested that they did not have a dud on their hands.

So Sony does Chinese food now? PS3 get total!

FFXIII

A couple of questions:

1. How much of Final Fantasy XIII was actually realtime? I've seen this issue debated and discussed without any real conclusion.

2. Are you impressed by realtime cutscenes, or do you care about how the game actually looks when real code is being processed?

Edit for a couple of thoughts: Warhawk looks like shit. The Naughty Dog game looks cool, but not out of the 360's league, and MGS4 looks spectacular--I have no criticisms of that. Lair...well, not my sort of thing.

Here are my ratings:

Sony: 4/10 (Big Disappointment)

Nintendo: 6/10 (meh)

Microsoft: 8/10 (Nice)

Sony's Conference was very disappointing. It briefly went over online and only showed the songstar, Most people want an online service to game online, not this stupid music store. Sony made no mention of what features the online service will have in terms of gaming online.. Sony made no mention of their Linux OS that was supposedly on the Harddrive. Most of the games shown in the CGI fest last year, did not make it this year. This totally ruined what we were hyped up for. It was nice to see heavanly sword look great, and that card capture games. MGS 4 was awesome as we all expected it to be. Sony's big "suprise" was a controller copying off Wii, and the two Ps3 retail prices. The control is nothing special. The 2 consoles packages is a disaster. The price is really high as we all expected to be. But $600 for the Ps3 Sony promised to us? And $500 for a stripped Ps3 that one cannot upgrade to the $600 ps3? Ridiculous.Sony should have never hyped those Features (HDMI, Wifi, memory slots, 6 USB). at last years E3 if they werent going to have them as standard.

I have to admit, I am no fan of Nintendo since N64. They have always seem to have repetitive and uninnovative 1st party titles. Milking Mario and pokemon for all they have. While vieing the conference I was very skeptical of this Innovative controller/remote. The games announced were nothing surprising, but didnt disappoint me. Thats basically sums up the entire Nintendo conference. You want see anything that will WOW you, but not much will disappoint you either. The main disappointment was the execution of the controller. In some of those demonstrations it seemed akward and downright difficult to control a character/vehicle with it.

Microsoft did the best in my eyes. They stuck to their gameplan and actually got us hyped up for their console. The gameplay footage they showed were of games we were all hyped about. Gears of war looked phenominal, definately best game of the show. Lost Planet is looking good, and should be a top seller. Microsoft showed their plan to improve Xbox live, and how it will expand to PC. This is something for PC gamers to get hyped up about. While Sony was telling gamers how they can buy music albums, Microsoft was showing how gamers will be able to design a car from Forza 2 on their PC, than use it on their console. Microsoft gived us a reason to be hyped up for the longterm. Showing Forza 2, Fable 2, and halo 3. Sure they all looked CGI, What would you expect? Microsoft to show gameplay footage of a game releasing 2 years from now? That's insane. It would take all the hype away from the games releasing this year. Microsoft's goal was just to get us gamers to know these games are coming, and you should be hyped for it. The disappointments of the show were barely any coverage of Too Human, and not enough Info on the xbox 360 camera.

Wait, so Peter Moore pimped the fact X360 is getting GTA4 the same day as PS3? I suppose this is a coupe of sorts, but that is funny. :lol

Well according to Kuturagi PS3 is also too cheap at the moment. Don't fall for the PR hype machine. ;)

just want to add, all the Xbox Live Arcade stuff really made me smile with joy. I know that's the low end games or whatever, but I really dig arcade, as does my wife and daughter and friends of mine. tons and tons of quality titles announced and on their way. pretty cool how I buy it once and I get to play the games on all the platforms as well.

another neat-o little thing was how pc and 360 gamers will finally get to play together. man, i wonder if that means that now all those stud PC's with uber connections can host games? hmmm.... maybe we'll finally get dedicated servers now? i don't think i've heard anyone think of this yet... but if it's possible, this could be a nice little touch for 360 online gamers.

According to Square, everything but the outside train sequence (which is pretty obvioulsy CGI).

As for debate on the matter, Laa-Yosh, a CGI programmer on B3D, vehemently argued that there was no way possible it was real-time last night, but upon seeing the native resolution shots, admitted he had been wrong and that they were. He is pretty good with this stuff, and the fact that he was fooled is pretty impressive.

I would HOPE the game looks that good during gameplay, but we will see. FF cutscenes do tend to look better than the game, and I think that was true of the video as well (the stroll in the forest looked better, to me, than the action sequence with the HUD, but both look utterly stunning, so it doesn't bother me). MGS4 gameplay always matches the cutscenes, so I'm not worried about that. Lair I'm very interested in (I hope that was all real... knowing the devs it was)... I'm a dragon nut.

I don't see how you guys can say GTHD is boring (it is), then let Bill Gates and his ambigiously large sidekick go by without a hitch...

I don't get the big deal over GTHD either way... it will be news when GT5 hits (and you know nothing will come close, considering how favorably GT4 compared on PS2 with the best on Xbox)

Until then, I don't really care.

I do think it was pointless of Sony to showcase the game at all, much less so predominantly, but I think the reasons why are obvious, if shortsighted...

Gran Turismo was the single best selling title of the last two generations. GT4, while doing FAR FAR poorer than GT3, is still like the 7th or 8th selling game this generation (GT3 is first of course, outdoing all the GTA games).

They probalby didn't have anything workable for GT5.

What PR? Nintendo said 27 games were playable on the show floor, how exactly is that PR hype? And honestly if you haven't figured out that you need to get hands on with the Wii to understand it then you are beyond dense.

I really don't know how people can be underwhelmed by the Nintendo conference.
basically it's like this... if you weren't already a fan of nintendo style games, there was nothing to be "whelmed" about. if you are a nintendo fan, then yeah, they made more of those types of games for you, so you're happy.

nintendo better hope they get grandma and grandpa and aunt jennie into the fold, cause they aren't going to be pulling any playstation or xbox gamers from them. they've simply stuck with what they've always had and done game wise and banked everything on the wii-mote. but history has shown it is never about the hardware, but software. nintendo has no software out of their mold of what they've always made. none that can pull in the xbox and playstation gamers and gain marketshare. so they are hoping to get an all new marketshare that doesn't yet exist. the non-gamer.

and i really don't think the Wii is going to get non-gamers to play it. anyone watch "Around the Horn" today and see them talk about gaming? they were ridiculing gamers and they think of us all as big geeky fat nerds who never see sunlight. they aren't about to humiliate themselves by waving a wand around supposedly because it's easier (which, judging by their conf. today, it looked like they couldn't hardly ever even hit the tennis ball, and turning in that Red game (the FPS from Ubi) look difficult and laborious). so much for "easier". the fact is, being "difficult to control" has never been the issue with people who don't want to play games.
