So the Sonic comics debacle

here we go

Why is Knuckles wearing a cowboy hat?

Ken liked it so much in the OVA that he borrowed it for the near-future universe this is.

That said, he redesigned it a bit between the Archie version and this mess. That Knuckles panel? Ripped from an Archie issue.

Zero, Axel, Sigma, and Vile. Every major X character except X.

X truly just gets fucked over when it comes to crossovers for fuck sake.

He's on both of the actual covers for the first issue.

Don't stop there, we actually have Page 1 now

For the record, that isn't Knuckles.

There's already a Knuckles expy in it, and none of the nonsense he wrote ever had anything to do with Sonic in the first place.

Exactly. It always felt like he was just using Sonic characters to get all his stories out there with little respect for the source material. In that regard, his work isn't very different to fan made stuff like Sonichu

The best part about that family tree is that the entire thing has been completely eradicated.

Were the womenfolk of the Knuckles family just so incredibly boring that they didn't warrant any panels? Is that the implication?

Ken's handling of women is not one of his strong suits, no.

I fucking loved the Archie Sonic comics growing up, and absolutely adored that Knuckles series. I actually really liked Penders world building and lore for the echidnas. Always found the dispute between Penders and Archie fascinating, just a complete oversight. I might read his new shit if he had decent art, get Spaz to do that shit or something.

Significantly. Even if you go by the much later NA release date, it has almost five years on the first appearance of future Knuckles here, which was Sonic #131.

Interesting. I never read that far into the sonic series itself so didn't know Knuckles himself ended up wearing it and seem to remember it belonging to one of his relatives in the old run of Knuckles own comic. Even if that is the case you are still right though. Looking it up the Knuckles comic was started in 97 and the OVA originally came out in 96 in japan. .

All I know is that somehow, and in some way the character Sally Acorn never went away and its canon. Thats all I care about. I honestly wish she had her own series from Sega. She was a better character than Sonic and stole the show on SAT am during my youth.

So my question is, how come they didn't contractualize him or something? Also wouldn't technically working under a copyrighted franchise imply that all works created within that is owned by the copyright holder regardless if they are original ideas of the staff?

Never read these, but that's how comics work since about the 80's or so when writers and pencillers started finding ways to be successfully independent, get some creative control, and work towards retaining some ownership... or at the very least credit for whatever they contribute to big comic umbrellas and their long running universes. It's the way it should be, Sonic or otherwise, but still isn't where it should be tbh

Since someone here managed to say it, I have to say I agreed with the echidna lore.
Then again, I was more Knuckles fan than Sonic fan, so I was glad he had more of his own species rather than being the last one.

Can't say I like what he's doing right now that caused the reboot/overhaul of the Sonic comics, but at least the end result of what we have now is both good and fresh.

The Knuckles series was boss as fuck and I loved it till they changed the artist in it. I pretty much just stopped reading all of the Sonic comics at that point I was so mad at it. Really though the story did start going down hill (in the Knuckles comic) after they stopped the 3 part mini series nature of it that they did with the first few sets.

Whoa, did Sally get a redesign to be more SEGA-ish? That's kinda cool.

Sonic hasn't been interesting in for- EH- ver, hopefully Archie and Sega both get their act together

Yeah, all the females wear modest clothing now (a good change, frankly), all the males don't wear modest clothing now (a questionable change, Antoine looks naked without his vest), anyone who was barefoot gained shoes (Rotor and Nicole, although Bunnie's robo-feet look kinda like they were shoes now too), things like that.

Woah, they rebooted the Sonic comics? I always enjoyed those comics, if there was some kind of easy way to get back into them *cheap online subscription winkwink* I would totally be down with getting back in. They always did a much better job of using Sonic characters than the actual Sonic games did.

Pfft. The fleetway comics were way better anyway.

All hail the Mighty Kitching!

This all the way. Kitching and Elson were legendary. Some of the later stuff went a bit iffy but the main story arcs based on the games were fantastic. I'd love to see a resurrection of STC.

You can't get a break on a subscription, but Comixology runs sales on back issues every so often.

They definitely followed the games much better than Archie. I never liked any of that SatAM rubbish.

STC Online is a fan continuation of it. Kitching has even contributed to it by doing some writing and art.

I loved Penders's early work on the series, and definitely thought his Knuckles lore was incredible, and it still is even today...

...Up until issue 26 or so, then it started to go downhill, and then he just crammed more and more bullshit into it to the point that it was unrecognizable. Truly a George Lucas case of "let's just keep adding and changing and retconning more things because that's the best thing to do".

I definitely miss the old universe, I've read these things since I was 6, and for the longest time it was the "True" Sonic medium for me instead of the games. Obviously I know I'm in the minority on that, but damn I loved these characters and it bummed me out so much to see the whole world rebooted with nothing but game characters and SatAM.

But hey, I'm sure the new world will be pretty great as Ian Flynn fleshes it out more and more, and there was a mountain of bullshit from the old universe that got trimmed out...I just wish they didn't have to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Never knew anything about the comics though I did watch a few of the cartoons. Never really liked them TBH. Preferred AoSTH.

STC online is a pale imitation. While I heard Kitching had given his blessing for them to carry on the STC legacy I wasn't aware he had done some work for them.

I kinda wish the comics didn't follow SatAM, I prefered StC greatly for not doing so.

Then again maybe it's just because I love AoSTH to the point where I own the DVD boxset.

STC was dope, got copies regularly saved behind the counter at the local newsagent. What little I saw of the Archie Sonic made little sense to me, guess its a US/UK divide in how Sonic was maybe seen in each country.

I saw recently that Breezie the Hedgehog from AOSTH was introduced

Seems like a cool way to pad out the universe again given they can't use any of the Penders characters anymore

Which is actually great because holy shit did that bog down everything

She's been pretty fun in the comics so far.

They also added Honey the Cat -- an unreleased character from that arcade game Sonic the Fighters. This is her first official appearance in any form.

I liked the echidna's when used well. They had an interesting dynamic, sally's family drama was shit i didn't care for at all though

Nope. The XBLA/PSN port from a couple years ago was actually polished up a bit, which included finishing and including her as a secret character.

Also Breezie from AOSTH is in the comics now? That's obscure, and has my interest. I think now is the time I finally read the rebooted universe

The first few issues of the reboot are kind of iffy owing to some poorly conceived meddling on the part of the editor, but it (and Universe) have been solid ever since, with the current arc setting a new high watermark for the series, period.

That's much less cluttered and the characters faces fit what they're saying much better. I'd say it's an improvement.

They're doing a full Sonic the Fighters arc with all the original characters in it. With Sonic turning into the Werehog at night.

Shit, I missed that release of it. Good to know.

I remember watching the show as a kid and finding the relationship between Sonic and Sally endearing, apparently they aren't a couple in the comics? Seems like a waste to me.

I dunno if they are or aren't after the reboot, but pre-reboot, I swear I've heard Ken Penders was hellbent on preventing that pairing from occurring, going as far as to imply she got hitched with Shadow instead in his it's-totally-canon-we-swear-you-guys future arc.

Although I also vaguely recall his future arc still had sons/daughters of a Sonic/Sally pairing, so...

All I know is that when love pairings show up in the Sonic games themselves, they never really work.
