So the Sonic comics debacle

Don't stop there, we actually have Page 1 now.

The Knuckles wearing a cowboy hatORIGINAL CHARACTER was eyebrow-raising enough as is, but according to that Sonic Stadium thread linked above, the art is taken straight from one of the Archie comic. Isn't that Penders guy setting himself for a major legal assfucking if he ever tries to sell the book?

Which sonic comics are worthy?

There seems to be hundred of them and can't read them all

The work of panders looks awful so I should skip it?

If you just want a quality read, start with the Mega Man crossover and work from there. Not that there weren't quality issues before then, but everything since then has definitively been quality, to my understanding.

I dunno if they are or aren't after the reboot

Aren't. Sega finally came down against the game cast getting hooked up at all, and Archie's happy to wash their hands of the whole no-win situation (and equally happy to tease the fans mercilessly about it).

At this point you're better off ignoring most of the series and picking it up at #257 or 258, and Universe #55 or 59 if you want more.

The going theory is Archie won't risk another court case where them having lost the contracts he was under can come up again. Sega is kind of pissed at them over that.

Those Dreamcast redesigns of the old crew are really cool. They should include those characters in an actual game, I miss them.
Yeah, that way they can be just as useless as the games' usual side cast /s

They do look really good now, but they're much better off in the comics. The only character getting any kind of justice with their in-game characterization is Eggman.

And Sega is continuing battles against Penders or not?

They never went up against him directly, it was Archie who did and they ultimately settled out of court and now live in fear of him bringing them to court again because Sega was so pissed over the "losing contracts"it's believed they were threatening to pull Sonic from Archie and finding a company that can keep track of impotent documents, and it's thought any more court cases could push Sega to do that.

the cover, for those wondering:

Holy shit, this guy was serious? I could understand having a love for your own creations(even though I would've just gone ahead and do something NEW, because if you are creative, you could creation a NEW world/universe/cast of characters to TRULY make it your own), at least hire a fuckin' artist.

Ken liked it so much in the OVA that he borrowed it for the near-future universe this is.

That said, he redesigned it a bit between the Archie version and this mess. That Knuckles panel? Ripped from an Archie issue.

He's on both of the actual covers for the first issue.
Hmm. Well I was wrong. I really should buy those books but I've never seen them in stores.

Penders is beyond rational. He sued over Sonic Chronicles having characters similar to his creations & yet fully intends on having a guy whose basically Knuckles in all but name. The hypocrisy of that seems to elude him.

holy crap what did i miss in sonic comics it thought i recently caught up.
left off with some secret freedom fighting force with silver n bunch of others,n the skunk betrayed them to work with that wizard. oh and robo sally was a thing too
It was starting to get interesting, im not even sure if i missed the reboot u guys are talking about with ken leaving and taking his characters with him. One thing for sure is the knuckles future fam thing was waay to confusing for me to care.

Still sucks that all those prior years of the comics mean absolutely zilch now thanks to Penders. That was a lot of history just tossed out. I try to keep up with it but so far none of it seems interesting to me.

You could always read Ken's graphic novel when he releases it

I just started reading some of these the other day, starting with the 252 reboot (though I'm probably going to go back and check out the Mega Man crossovers as well).
They're really neat, and it's nice to see the vast array of Sonic characters depicted by people who can actually write.

Basically all that Secret Team stuff died with the reboot. It Headed by Alias, Sally's brother, created by Penders. Same with St John.

Naugus is still in the Canon, but his background is quite different.

Basically the Sonic comic can use anything from:

- The video games
- The AoStH series
- The SatAM series

For example, the current story:

Wow, that comic actually looks pretty great. Those pages are just a joy to look at. I bailed on Archie around issue #60 or so. Around that time they were cycling through artists like crazy and a lot of the artwork was just horrible.

But not Sonic Underground or Sonic X. There were even plans to give SU a long belated finale in the comics that got canned.

PS Oh shit Breezie! Forgot all about her!

So around when would one recommend starting with the rebooted universe? Just from the beginning? Or is there an area where it gets really good? Those pages that were posted look great

Sonic really feels like it'd be a fun series to work in when it comes to creating a comic around it...I mean despite the flaws recently in the games, Sonic is still a cool and fun character at heart.

Is this for the same Sonic The Comic than ran in the UK in the 90s?
No, that was a separate publication by Fleetway which was set in its own universe, though based on the Sega UK background for Sonic.

Another good read based on the same backstory was Sonic the Hedgehog and the 4th Dimension.

I still remember things like the StC 100th issue special and all the build up towards it. Turning Super Sonic into a psychopathic murderer was a stroke of storywriting genius on Kitching's part.
They even took the simple rescued animal sprites and made them into amazing characters, especially Porker Lewis.

You're about a couple years behind now, yeah.

They employ actual talent and have standards now and everything. It's great.

#252 is the reboot's start point. The first few issues reintroduce the cast, the general state of the world, and set up the Unleashed plot, but they also get a bit bogged down in a hamfisted, editorially mandated attempt to tie it into the old continuity when they really should've just made a clean break. #257 is almost clean of it and starts digging into the story properly, and it's been gold from 258 on, although the last two issues have admittedly jumped into a whole different tier of quality altogether.

Universe runs in parallel with it and the reboot picks up at #55, although the first arc was produced in the middle of the legal chaos and doesn't have much of anything to do with anything as a result.

Just bought the first two volumes of the reboot off Amazon for $20. I used to love the comic growing up but it got so convoluted I stopped trying to follow it. I had no idea they pulled an infinite crisis and rebooted the whole thing. I am kind of excited to start the series again. Cant wait until they arrive.

How did this thread get to be like 3 pages now O_o

Which sonic comics are worthy?

aS IS? Start with the Worlds Collide series, then read the Megaman comics.
The current Sonic series post reboot is OK, but the current arc in the main Sonic book has finally gotten me to like the book again, great art and all in all fun.

FYI Sonic Universe is mainly to tell stories featuring other characters from the series like Knuckles, Shadow, etc.

why is Sonic Underground so weird and out of place it bothers me

It just is. Fortunately, it's not part of the comics.

I also would recommend starting with the "New 252". Although, there are also some good Sonic Universe arcs from the past you could look into as well. Both of Amy's team ups with Blaze have produced some fun stories. Also, check out the recent Best of Sonic 300 page collection for 10 bucks, which will probably only have very recent stories since the whole Penders ordeal made a mess of everything.

EDIT: Indeed it has, but alas nobody seems to have figured out that SEGA reference :V

Also best troll face evah

Like I said the current story arc is really good and fun and has looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooots of shoutouts to Sonic and SEGA stuff
like Honey the Cat appearing in the tourney, mentioning Dreamcasters as the line of clothing Amy's wearing is currently from.

I still find it weird that they made the Fighters cast as convicts (with Bean being insane even) pre-reboot.

Only Knack (who's been a villain from day one back on the Game Gear), Bean and Bark, Bean and Bark are officially convicts in the games too as you an see Wanted posters of them in the City Escape level of Sonic Generations.

*sigh* I honestly would not be surprised if there was a secret cabal dedicated to ruining all things sonic....Sonic and Sally is life
