I voted for Microsoft.
Nintendo was dramatically better than last year, not that that would be hard, in that there were three games that I'm definitely interested in: Metroid, Mario Galaxy 2, and Golden Sun DS. Still loads of crap that I didn't give a shit about which kind of prevented it from being the number one, but hopefully the Nintendo conferences are more like this in future.
Sony was very good. Opened strongly with that fantastic Uncharted 2 demonstration - my most wanted PS3 game - and I liked the look of MAG, although it was kind of complicated to demo particularly well. It also closed incredibly well with GT5, GOW, and The Last Guardian. It just sagged a lot in the middle, and although there was some good stuff in there they spent way too long on the incredibly boring demos of the motion controller and ModNation, which lost a lot of steam for the conference.
I must say that what they showed on stage of God of War III was kind of disappointing. Not only did they cut before something exciting was going to happen but the sequence shown was kind of underwhelming. Obviously it's better in terms of graphical fidelity, but the actual action didn't even look as impressive in scope as the opening sequence of GOWII IMO, particularly when we've already seen battles on the back of a Titan and stuff like that.
Mainly, though, most of the games aren't going to be out this year. I doubt any of the last three will, neither Final Fantasy will, the motion controls won't... There's a lot of responsibility on Uncharted 2 for 2009.
Microsoft impressed me the most because it bought a lot of games, many of which are coming this year, and some were even new announcements like Left 4 Dead 2 and Forza 3 - we knew that one was coming, admittedly, but it hadn't been confirmed. Splinter Cell came out of nowhere to be one of my most wanted for 2009, although I am a huge fan of the series.
It also started laying out its stall for 2010, which is something that Microsoft hasn't really done over the last few years; we now have Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII for next spring, with MGS: Rising, Crackdown 2 (I assume that's 2010 as it was CG and no date was announced), and Halo: Reach for later, so apparently Microsoft got sick of the "360 has no games for this year" that seems to come about every January. It makes the platform look healthier.
Nadal was impressive technically and is revolutionary if it works as advertised, but I have my doubts about whether or not it's going to work that well in the living room. It would be nice to be proven wrong, but I'm staying pessimistic there.
