Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed out on PC today

This game is absolutely fantastic.

Actually the stagnation of the Mario Kart series made me think I was tired of this game. It turns out I was just tired of the stagnation.

I am not being hyperbolic when I say the track design in this game is leaps and bounds better than any Mario Kart game. Not only are they awesome on an aesthetic level, packed with references and cool nods, but the way they change the track up mid course, all the short cuts, multiple paths, even the incorporation of new ideas like the asteriods shooter area in one of the Sonic levels.

Actually my only major complaint outside of the minor things they need to patch (no way to turn off in game voice is awful and the random crashes every hour or so are annoying), is that I kind of wish there were at least a few more tracks that were straight forward. Like I would like some purely car or flying or hover tracks. I certainly love the way they mix it up but the game is like at 11 all the time. It would be nice to have a bit more vanilla with the fudge.

Tip:
-consume your drift boosts between boost pads when the pad boosts wear off

Actually, for level 1 boosts it's good to release them right before you hit the boost pad because the boosts will stack. With level 2 and 3 boosts, however, you want to release them right after you hit the boost pad so that they will stack properly.

Stacked boosts are usually superior to separating the boosts.

Thanks, I'll try this out. Should help my times a bit more.

First DmC and then this game both running at flawless 1080p @60fps (except for 4-player split-screen, which never dips below a respectable 30fps) makes me feel good about my aging E8400+GTX285. Hopefully it can handle Bioshock Infinite as well as these two.

Is this version as broken as the console version? The Online is a mess on Xbox, constant network errors and collision problems.

Also the instant item at the beginning is a terrible idea.

I think that's part of the problem with the collision early on, actually.

Didn't play the 360 version but I played for about 3 hours multiplayer last night with a mix of random players and friends. We usually had between 5-9 players in each game the games went well. I had a couple of instances of lagg and got booted/game crashed after a race finished when returning to the lobby a few times, but no problems during the actual races.

I saw this in a Steam thread:

3 people in a row just said Match making/region invite now worked for them. Anyone that has tried this?

ill have to try this.

also, ive added everyone that wanted to be in the group. remember that once you are in the group you can add others in.

OK... I've been playing this game for a bit today on PC. Much better than the last few Mario Kart games, but still ripping off enough to make it familiar. The first time I turned into a plane I about lost it. I didn't know that was in the game. It reminds me of the Diddy Kong Racing days of yore.

It looks absolutely stunning on the PC. I even got my wife to come in the computer room to test out split screen. I didn't even know you could use 2 wireless controllers with one receiver. I've been playing first-person shooters for a long time. I definitely needed this to break up the monotony. It's super challenging too. I had to play through that first traffic challenge a few times before I got it.

Highly recommended.

Tap/briefly press the gas as you fade up from black to each countdown number.

Countdown timing goes like this:

Fade up from black, tap gas, 3
Fade up from black, tap gas, 2
Fade up from black, tap or hold gas, 1

The timing is somewhere after it starts to fade up, but before the number is completely there on a completely opaque screen.

You can get up to a level 3 boost at the start, which is either blue or white looking depending on the lighting of the stage you're racing. Level 1 is red, 2 is purple, 3 is blue/whiteish.

On the rolling starts the same timing applies, but the lack of fade ups makes it more difficult as you've lost your visual clue.

If you screw up the timing (spew out black exhaust) you'll lose the entire boost. So you could have a level 2 boost, mess up and start the race with nothing.

risk boost can also be chained to a serious boost or something, it's hard to do but you get a level 3 boost out of it. Basically you roll out of the way of something but into something else, then roll instantly again and the announcer will call it out.

Thanks for these tips guys. I was seriously scratching my head at how i managed to randomly pull off pre-start boosts at times and puffs of smoke at other times.

Also, the risk boost sounds really groovy to use in a level like the friggin Afterburner one (race and sprint levels) and that all flight NIGHTs level. Damn AI was beasting at even easy mode for the Sprint Afterburner level.

Cant seem to find the search function for the mobile version of this site...

Anyone know if this supports higher resolutions? 2560x1440 specifically? Thanks

It does. I'm rocking 1440p, and I know that others in this thread have gone higher.

Umm esai is it okay if I add you in Steam first so you can add me to the group? Ever since my Steam account was hacked two years ago I always leave my Steam Profile on private :/

yeah, go for it.
the nights track proved one thing to me. i suck at flying.

Had some amazon dollars left over from gift cards at christmas and saw this was a digital download. Impulse bought, though I loved the first one on xbox so I doubt I'll be disappointed.

Nice to see so many liking the game. It's fantastic though based on sales, not that many people bought it (at least for consoles) which is sad.

Here is a review I did about a little bit more than a month ago.
The first one didn't look like it had been successful, but ended up with more than a million copies sold. The same audience is there and it's a much better game, I don't see why it wouldn't sell at least something near that figure, specially with the Wii U launch.

Just unlocked the Sega AGES character, my God this thing is amazingly cool. I urge everybody to put in the effort to unlock it. It has so many little sound and graphic effects that pay homage to everything Sega.

As much as I like all-stars...this game has probably the best fan service of any game Ive ever played...it makes me excited about characters ive never even seen before

Yeah, it's not hard or cheap, it just requires you to understand the game mechanics and apply them.
On normal you can faff about cluelessly and be first every time, if you somewhat chain boosts properly you end up winning by 20 seconds or more..

Tip:
-consume your drift boosts between boost pads when the pad boosts wear off (or rather try to chain your boosts you get 3 lvls of boost)
-if you let go of the drift button for a very short time you can change drift direction without activating boost and you can keep it going
-there is a thing called 'risk boost', you get it for using the roll in the plane to avoid collision with the environment, using this is mandatory on hard.
It's not mandatory. I never used this once even on S. It's a neat idea tho.

Such a good, rewarding game.

When racing as the boat and you crash/hit something it makes the Dreamcast loading noise. So cool. Brings a tear to my eye everytime.

I can see it picking up in sales as word of mouth goes around and price drops happen but I read that the game did no where near as good as the original in terms of how both started out.

I guess things could turn around though. You are also right that the Wii U will help; people who have the system will check the game out since there isn't much to play on the system.

I saw this in a Steam thread:
I've port forwarded the following port ranges:
- 3074-3074 (TCP/UDP)
- 27000-27030 (UDP)
- 27014-27050 (TCP)

3 people in a row just said Match making/region invite now worked for them. Anyone that has tried this?

More and more people at Steam and other places (some in here) are saying that this is working. Apparently the last one is for custom matches while the other is for public. Remember that everyone in the room probably must do this for it to work.

I was having trouble connecting to custom games but I was able to solve the issue by forwarding port 27016 UDP. This port is opened when creating a custom game. After forwarding, I could connect to one of my friend's custom games and he could connect to mine. It seems like this port needs to be forwarded by all parties connected to the custom game, host included.

edit
Errr... can this be true?

HEY EVERYONE

If you want to multiplayer, put your download region as your friend's. It works!

Well I know the chances are slim but I'll go ahead and ask the usual obligatory "Isamu driving game" questions anyway:

1)Does the game allow you to drive from a hood or bumper cam?

2)Does the game support force feedback or even analog steering wheels?

3)Up to how many people can race online together?

I'm trying! I think I have 45 more stars to go...

Not sure anyone in this thread is going to answer two for you, but you can assume that's a hard no. The first game didn't even support wheels and that didn't have flying sections where you had to go up/down in space.

You can also forget about hood/bumper cam.

Already have this for WiiU and really like it, can anyone who has both confirm whether the pc version runs smoother (the WiiU version is all over the place) and has had a graphical upgrade.

cheers

Check the PC screenshots thread and see for yourself. We're talking about a MASSIVE improvement in IQ and 60 FPS locked on a medium rig.

Wii U version runs at sub-30fps, PC version can easily run at 60fps. Of course you can also get a higher resolution and it has a much better IQ.

The characters also don't have facial animations in the Wii U version, but that's probably for the best because Sumo is pretty bad at doing those. Vyse's blank expression is better than the weird smile he makes at the end of a race.

Part of me wants to get this even though I have the PS3 version and barely played it, is the online any better on PC? Several times on PS3 I won a race but it told me I came last and I lost 100 points

Why are you guys having so much fun with this game?? Now you made me buy it off of GMG for only $22! Grr I already have too much to play. :)

I really want to double dip on this but spent so bloody long playing the 360 version I don't think I have it in me to go through it all again to unlock dudes :(

I don't think they priced this game aggressively enough. Even though it seems pretty good, I just can't see spending $30 on a kart racing game at this point. It feels like a $10-$15 game to me, especially when you consider the other games you can get on Steam for that price.

This game has a shitload of content. If you really believe that some genres are inherently inferior and thus should be priced accordingly I don't know what to tell you though.
