Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing announced! (Ryo revealed! Yay three Shenmue fans!)

If Akira and Jacky turn out to be the VF Kids version, then we could say that's a Saturn game (of course, I'm really stretching here, but that Akira picture doesn't look like the normal VF Akira)

If it were me, I'd have put someone from Panzer Dragoon (Azel, probably).

Oh, and I'd hardly call the Saturn a "major" era of Sega's history. If anything, it's possibly their least significant. It was their first system to underperform, and has nowhere near the cult following the Dreamcast does.
:lol

Lycett's comment "Yep, we’ve had a late rush of support for some characters this time, and if we do something along these lines again, or do DLC, maybe we’ll look at trying to get them in a future title. Or maybe some of them are already in, but not in a form you expect. I know at least one that’s going to make a lot of folk happy." at least allows me to be hopeful that somewhere there's NiGHTS.

Who wants to bet the odd cameo will be found on the posters in the Jet Set Radio stage? Hardly the same as being playable, but would be a cute nod.

See thats what I consider decent fan service. Detailed stuff that would be easy to miss unless you know what you're looking for!

I hope a demo comes out on live before it releases sometime next month. I really want to play this game!
I hope that if there is a demo, it accurately shows off the game. The demo to SST failed at doing that, being nowhere near as good as the game.

Sumo delivered Ryo - a minor miracle as far as I'm concerned.

There's so much hate in this thread it's unbelievable. Just wait till Sonic and Sega All Stars Fighting for your favourite character to appear!

Also I just realized that the song in the new trailer is from the final level of Sonic Heroes. I do hope they're doing new music, or at the very least some remixes.

Sonic Heroes wasn't the worst game, but it was the start of the downfall (EggRobots, Shitty friends). The fact that the three known Sonic levels are all based on it (Final Fortress, Seaside Hill, Casino Park) is just weird.

Death Egg Zone from Sonic 3&K is a better level to base a game off of, or even Scrap Brain. Not because of Nostalgia, but because they were full of great gimmicks that could be fun in a racing game - anti gravity, space bridges, all that stuff.

Wasn't the tennis game also similar in having more references to Sonic Heroes than the other Sonic games too?
I wonder what it is they like about Sonic Heroes.

It was. I guess it was the first and last 3d Sonic game that tried to capture that old look, so it's easier to emulate again.

But then Smash Bros pulled off Green Hill pretty well.

So what do you think they'll do for the final level of the game? I'm betting on some sort of Sonic Special Stage level...

Sega Superstars Tennis also pulled off Green Hill Zone pretty well too.

But yeah, it really bothered me that Sonic 1 and Sonic Heroes were the only Sonic games referenced in regards to courts and music. And so far, we've seen two definite Sonic tracks in S&SASR, and both are from Sonic Heroes (Seaside Hill and Final Fortress). Hell, the casino track also looks like it could be Casino Park.

I really hope there's at least one Sonic track based on the old games, and although Green Hill Zone would be better than nothing, something completely out of left field would be nice. Racing around somewhere like Star Light Zone, Mystic Cave Zone, or Hydrocity Zone (or somewhere from Sonic Adventure 1) would be AWESOME. There's more to Sonic games than greenery and mechanical archetypes.

However, at least we know there's a lot more variety in regards to music this time around.

On an unrelated note, I really hope we see new tracks as DLC. Characters are nice and all, but it's the tracks that make a racing game.

I imagine the fact they can just use designs, assets (as a rough guide at least) and concept stuff from the Heroes levels to just go straight into making tracks rather than having to re-jigger retro stuff to work in 3D is the main thinking behind it. Sad, but good theyre going with the more Sonic-y designs of Heroes over the generic dull real life settings of all the rest of the games since.

Well, now that all the info is pretty much in, looks like I'm going with the 360 version. Playing as Banjo/Kazooie and Avatars beats not playing as anyone extra on PS3.

First Bayonetta, now this. Curse you Sega for making me buy third party 360 games!:lol

If they can make a sonic 2 special stage track which is as wild and awesome as mario kart's rainbow road, I WANT

You just did not compare the shitty technically port with not having to play as tacked on character and bunch of avartars?

If anything that's a plus of PS3 version.

Btw. There were some reports that PS3 version is running at better fps. That might be just the beta, but who knows if it wont hold for final version.

The PS3 version ran like ass back at E3, things change.

How about you wait until the game is out before we make blanket statements?

If you don't like a character, don't pick them. You'd have to be incredibly self-centered to say that the OPTION to choose an extra character, simply because you don't like them, is a bad thing. There are plenty of people who are happy to see Banjo and Kazooie.

If the PS3 were the only version getting an exclusive character, and it was Ratchet or Sackboy, or whoever, I wouldn't give a fuck, but I'd acknowledge it as being a plus for other people who do.

As for calling the 360 version a "shitty technically port", maybe you should save comments like that for after it's actually been released?

Anyway, for all the non-negative Nancys and Banjo fans, it's possible that there might be some Banjo music in the game. Somebody asked Grant Kirkhope (formerly a composer for Rare who worked on the Banjo games, among others) on Facebook if he had heard about Banjo's inclusion, and he said "Robin did the tune for it". Robin Beanland is also a composer for Rare, and worked with Grant Kirkhope on Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

BanjoSegaAllStars.gif

It's possible that he was referring to the music in the trailer that revealed Banjo, but I think it's unlikely that Sega would get someone from Rare to do music for a trailer, especially since it's an original piece, and not based on any music from the Banjo games. Even if Robin Beanland did compose the music for the trailer, surely that would make it even more likely there would be something in the final game? Why compose a piece of music for the trailer of another developer's game, and nothing for the game itself?

I love the music in the Banjo games, so I really hope this is true.

I still don't understand how people can spin extra characters as a negative.
It is a negative when the extra character is butt ugly and takes over the front cover. I'd rather buy a Sega all-stars racing game with just Sega characters in it personally, but thats mainly because I don't care for Banjo-Kazooie. The avatars/Miis are a neat extra though.

I only care because my favourite SEGA character got left out of an All-Stars/Superstars game for the first time while non-SEGA characters are eating roster slots.

It's more an extra roster slot than anything (so the 360 version has one extra character over the rest, presuming the PS3 has no one extra) but yeah, still a bit of a shame. At least for me many of the new additions more than make up for it, especially Opa Opa.

I'm sure he'll get added via DLC. Conveniently, I'm sure the price will have collapsed by that point as well, so it all kind of works out for me.

I haven't been following this game for a while, so I would like to know how many characters are there in this game and if it looks good or not.

Depends on the version, but each of the console versions has at least 20 characters, with the 360 version having two more on top of that, and the Wii version having one more.

It looks pretty damn fun.

Thats nice, have all the characters been confirmed or there more on the way.

And I still think Sonic should just run, the way sega portrays him as the fastest thing ever you can't help but cringe seeing him in the car.

"Shitty technical port" was attached to PS3 Bayonetta, lols.

I don't care if it's Banjo or whatever else. I hate those forced additions that aren't connected in any sense. What part of Sega's All Stars Banjo is again? Others may like it, but I hate when games stink of "A word from our sponsor!" shit.

All of the retail characters have been confirmed and/or leaked, but apparently there are going to be characters coming as DLC? Dunno about that.

Banjo didn't take that character's place. If Banjo wasn't in the game then they still wouldn't have put that character in.

That and Sumo Digital did at first have it set up as Sonic on foot, Tails in his full size plane etc, but found it made the game stupidly unbalanced and awkward looking. But you know, so called laws of a character and his universe come before gameplay..

And yeah Sonic should be on his feet, I'm pretty sure they could make it work if they really wanted to.

Come on, it's not like it's advertising. It's just reaching out to a wider audience.

Just out of curiosity, what did you think about Sonic and Snake's inclusion in Brawl?

My mistake regarding Bayonetta; sorry.

Because its Banjo the googly eyed cunt face, that's why. Quite possibly the shittest character of all time, and he even soils the box to boot.

No it just makes you fucking retarded.

If it helps you sleep at night why don't you just imagine that part of the rules in this obviously real racing tournament are that everyone has to be in a vehicle? There, confusion over, everyone's happy.

this is not the same as Brawl where Sonic fighitng Mario is the death match..

-Banjo 1st is not even popular at all;
-is a N64 spawned character which has zero relevance to the Saturn and basically did not even compete with anything Saturn
-if this is MS's idea of attracting buyers; then it has an opposite effect on me because I want my Sega games to be RARE free since I never cared about Rare ever in my life

j/k, i think banjo is a fitting enhancement

I'm sure your intuition is more reliable than the early game build that was tried, tested, and failed.

How do you make drifting work when a character is running on foot?

Sumo Digital put everybody on a level playing field. As said above, gameplay and balancing is far more important than appeasing some rabid Sonic fans who take the franchise so seriously that they get pissy when he's not running, simply because they've decided to deem what does and doesn't make sense in regards to the series.

The whole "Sonic can run faster than everybody else and would never use a vehicle" nonsense isn't even adhered to in the Sonic games themselves:

1) Tails and Knuckles can run just as fast as Sonic.

2) So can Robotnik, apparently, seeing as he outruns Sonic in the Death Egg Zone in both Sonic 2 and Sonic & Knuckles.

3) Sonic rides a dodgem in Sonic Adventure 1's Twinkle Park.

4) Sonic rides a car in a Sonic Adventure 2 racing minigame.

5) Sonic has been in plenty of racing games (Sonic Drift 1 + 2, Sonic R, Sonic Riders 1 +2, Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing, and maybe more that I'm unaware of), only ONE of which he was on foot.

Seeing as how the main Sonic series has next to no consistency regarding this (or anything else for that matter), I have to naturally assume that the people who take issue with it aren't too far removed from the people who take the source material, fill in the gaps in their head, and have a creepy reverence for it (ie. the kind of people who write Sonic fanfiction and post bizarre Sonic-related pictures on Deviantart).

I can understand complaining about Sonic being outrun by the likes of Bowser in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (though I personally couldn't care less), as that requires a far greater suspension of disbelief, but bitching about Sonic driving a car in a game in which EVERYBODY is in a vehicle is just petty.

So basically, Banjo in S&SASR is a no-no, but Sonic in Brawl is OK, because you personally liked that? Double standards, much?

Yo make a good argument. But about the drifting, you could drift in Unleashed if I remember correctly.

Anyway lets just drop it, I guess I'll just have to play Sonic in a car. Ah well.

"Sega nullifies anything non-Sega"? I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you're being ironic (especially given your argument that Banjo shouldn't be present because "is a N64 spawned character which has zero relevance to the Saturn and basically did not even compete with anything Saturn").

If so, good one. Very witty.

Don't take the above too personally; it wasn't directed at you or anybody here in particular, but rather the whole "Sonic shouldn't be in a car" mentality that some people refuse to drop. You clearly don't like it, but you just now said "Oh well" and will be getting it anyway. I'm talking more about the kind of people who refuse to let it go, and are boycotting the game for that reason alone.
