Sony cancels Getaway PS3 and Eight Days

Looks like Sony might have finally been forced into a change of approach...

Moneyhatting.

I don't like it in principle but the cost and resources to make these games is enormous. Securing exclusives by paying third parties to make them for you is a sensible way to go until development costs and schedules are under control. A certain other company has shown that...

To me it seems like they just ran out of budget as they were working on too much at the same time. Between all the stuff they have for PSN, PSP, and the PS3, it looked like they were stretching themselves thin.

I don't think they'll go for any moneyhats when they have great relationships with companies like Naughty Dog and Insomniac to help boost their 1st party portfolio.

Project Hammer 2? They could be cancelling those games to work on more casual stuff, just like NST! :(

Likely though, it's just to work on the bloatware, Killzone 2.

Naughty Dog is first party.

Hmm, so footage on games beyond Killzone 2 at E3 will be minimal I guess. Very dissappointing.
I hope Sony doesn't make the same mistake Microsoft did at E3 07.

Can't say I'm too shocked, both games always looked more like tech-demos to me. In fact I'm surprised to hear that Eight Days was actually even in development.

Seems like SCEE is putting all their eggs into one basket (Killzone 2), which is a mistake IMO.

Fuck this. I was actually interested in these games, unlike Resistance 2 or Killzone 2. Sony's first party lineup is starting to become really depressing.

WTF! Its slowly setting in, I've been waiting since E3 06 to see Eight Days and I come on NeoGaf at 9 fuck o clock on a Wednesday to find out its canceled?! OMGF, I thought I'd get a big rveal at E3 07 and it would blow me away. Damn you Sony. Just when I think I'm getting close to blowing a huge load on some awesome at E3 you blue ball me....thanks alot. That money better go to some godliness dammit..

I didn't mean that an Offset trailer is coming or that I know anything about it. I just want it, and tomorrow's as good a day as any.

Honestly, sounds like a good move. I was interested in Eight Days, and my interest in the Getaway was only for its supposed graphical prowess, but if this means that the other games will be a lot better because of this move, then this is something I can get behind. Good to see they are putting more focus in the other games they are developing to make them as high of a quality as possible. Hopefully this means they are also willing to spend on securing high quality third party exclusives as well. We see how MGS 4 is seriously garnering interest for the PS3.

If I was Sony, I'd pay Square to develop a sequel to Chrono Trigger, if that was somehow possible.

I'm disappointed. "..it was deemed that with the incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles coming up both this year and in the near future..." I don't see an incredibly strong list, Eight Days had potential.

wait, i thought GT5s london track was based on the Getaway's implementation of London?

... huh?

I don't mind The Getaway being canceled, but Eight Days could have been fun, too bad it will never be released.

We still know Heavy Rain and Team ICO are waiting behind the curtain. Either of those games could be showstopper potential. And I'm personally optimistic about Infamous.

The little bit of Project Offset that's come out looks amazing, but all signs point to PC/360 only.

Sony should deliver a fat moneyhat to Tarsier Studio for City of Metronome.

the getaway tech was one of the first things to be demoed on ps3 that made me go "WOA!" but now... christ. this doesn't exactly send a great message. What the hell is going on?

Ico team - what the hell are they working on? if anything? here we are, closing rapidly on two years in and the whole ps3 set up from a 1st party perspective looks so badly managed it's almost disasterous. If it's not delayed, it's either MIA, we are getting a "remake version" to tide us over, or it's silence. oh, or it's made by insomniac/naughty dog and has quality pouring all over it. Great as those two are, everyone else sounds like they are floundering.

Come on Sony, fingers out. The heat is on.

Next game to get canceled: Heavy Rain

Quantic Dream is an independent studio, and Heavy Rain is currently in full production. Sony has little to no say in what happens with that game.

That doesn't make any sense. Unless Quantic Dream is going bankrupt, why would they want to cancel Heavy Rain? It's not like they have other, more important projects going on.

Wasn't there a rumor that the Getaway team was working on some action game that was suppose to blow everyone away? It was from the EGM rumor section.

Yeah, a FPS called The Protector. As if Ps3 didn't already have enough FPS games...

this is the only thing I don't like about how sony runs their first party. You have to wait sooooo long just to see what their games look like. No dev diaries or anything, just dead silence for 2 years or more. I admit when they do show of games they looks great but still, something to keep us interested while waiting a whole year for an update.

Sony really shouldn't be canceling games at this point. They need all the exclusive and First Party games they can make.

It's better to cancel the game if problems arise and affects the quality of the game.

Wasn't "The Protector" the new name for Eight Days?

Some game by the name of "The Protector" was announced a few weeks ago and had nothing to do with Sony, it seemed.

Perhaps Sony was really going to call it "The Protector" but suddenly that other game snapped up the title and they were like "OK, that's it, we give up!" :lol

No, PD said "they went to London and had trouble with buses blocking their pictures for the design of the track" or something along those lines. AFAIK the London track is original work.

As you might know, SCEE is the publisher of HR and since they're canceling "mainstream" games like Getaway and Eight Days, I think they could drop HR too. I mean, HR is such a risky project (in terms of sales) compared to Getaway and Eight Days, I honestly can't see SCEE pouring endless amounts of money into such project.

No.... maybe? I'm just going out of memory. According to EGM, Sony Liverpool is making The Protector. Which studio was making Eight Days?

Between Motorstorm, Resistance, Warhawk (totally rebooted) and Uncharted I think PS3 has established some solid franchises in its first year. And who knows, if Sony owns Heavenly Sword, even that series has potential (with a different developer).

What I find odd is that some really creative people within SCE have either been silent (Zipper, WRU?) or making small games on small budgets. I would hope people like Tsutomu Kouno (Loco Roco) or Hiroyuki Kotani (Patapon) are being given as much creative freedom/$$$ as they need in future projects.

no... correct me if wrong but isn't The Protector the new SCEE game that the journalist played and was amazed by it, and was suppose to be top secret?

Well it sucks that 8 days got cancelled, ws looking forward to a new IP, I wonder what the teams are gonna be doing now.

It depends. If a project is in trouble and is unlikely to be salvaged into anything decent, it's better to cancel it now, than to spend another year pouring resources into a hole, that could go towards more promising projects.

Although if the rumoured new FPS is true then I'll be annoyed. Sony already have Killzone and Resistance, plus with third parties churning them out like there's no tomorrow, the last thing the PS3 needs at the moment is another bloody FPS.
