Sony cancels Eight Days and The Getaway

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that it has cancelled production on two PlayStation 3 titles that were in development at the Sony London Studio - Eight Days and The Getaway.

A statement from the Corporation read as follows: "It has been agreed that production of both Eight Days and The Getaway will cease immediately due to the redistribution of resources and budget.

"This decision was made following an internal review of all games and it was deemed that with the incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles coming up both this year and in the near future, resource should be reallocated to enhance those projects closer to completion.

"Worldwide Studios has a reputation for innovative and entertaining games, with titles such as LittleBigPlanet, SingStar,Buzz, EyeToy and Eye of Judgement, and will continue to push the boundaries on all PlayStation platforms."

More to follow.

Too bad for the getaway :(. I actually enjoyed the first. second not so much. Eight Days i totally forgot about it till now.

I knew it. I knew they were never actively being developed. They said they were "in production" but that could be anything as simple as batting around ideas for the game. I knew Eight Days at least, would never actually get made. Getaway is sort of a surprise. the previous getaway games were kinda shit though, so it's not a big loss.

Beat me to it. haha

Shock indeed, but considering London Studio chucked a lot of workers onto Killzone 2, then I suppose there was always a question mark over these titles.

I'm not that sad to lose The Getaway, I thought the first ones were pretty shoddy. We hardly knew enough about Eight Days though.

ouch

Not that I was thinking much about these titles but it certainly isn't good news that they're canceling titles. Anyone, not just Sony.

Something "BIG", think MMO, RPG.

Source?

With the "success" of both Getaway games, and Eight Days being a mere tech demo....is anyone actuallly surprised.

BTW both Getaway games sucked.

This fucking sucks. Sure The Getaway series has issues but I was looking forward to what the new version would be as well as what Eight Days was going to be in terms of gameplay mechanics, especially if it really was going to be some sort of on-rails shooter.

not surprised at all, but it's always a bit of a downer when any game (at least any game that appeared to be even semi-promising) is cancelled.

the first one was alright. it was fun to finish it once, but there was little to come back for. also, the controls were really frustrating (remember the part where you have to get past all the lasers? lol), and the cop's ending was a lame 10 second cutscene.

Big MEH, I was interested on both, or at least one of them (curious to know if they could save The Getaway, and intrigued about Eight Days).

Too bad, always sad when I see a project cancelled.

So what exactly have these teams been doing all this time? Home?
Isn't one of them basically the Sony Geek Squad that teaches lesser studios how to better tap the CELL?

I'm not too surprised about The Getaway. I think they realized it was about time to stop putting so much cash into a franchise that hasn't really attracted many gamers. It would probably get mediocre reviews just like the previous two, and then poor sales to show for it. A lose/lose situation all around. Eight Days...well I don't know anything about that one outside of the video we saw a couple years ago.

Fuck.

Eight Days was way, way, way further in to production than Getaway 3 ever got to, so... no.

This piece of news is your cue to spill everything you know/knew about these projects!

Killzone 2, february 2009 release I guess...
Although I don't understand why Sony puts everything behind Killzone 2, the first game was decent at best but Resistance was much better. The graphics are amazing, but the gameplay seems to be the same old...

M-E-G-A-T-O-N

Does this mean that Xun was right about Sony London working on a FPS rather than a new Getaway.... or that he was wrong?

A firiend of mine said that she'd spoken to someone at SCEE (IIRC) and they'd said that Eight Days looked 'great'.

I'm actually quite shocked. While we haven't heard anything in a while it seems to me that cancelling both these games this 'late' after they have (presumably) spent years working on them to some degree is a real surprise.

Though in saying that I wouldn't be surprised if these games assets and tech simply got 'absorbed' by another first party game.

Could it be that simply neither of them were working out or is this the first post Harrison shake up from SCE-WWS?
