Sony kills concept approval, makes moves to get indies onto PS4

The real thing I hear from indies over and over again is, "We want things to be easier, we want to get onto these consoles more easily." Sounds like that's what you're going after. Do you have any more targets in your sights?

I think the key for us is continue going -- PAX is a perfect example. Sitting down with people in the Indie Mega Booth and being like, Why aren't you on it? And the fact that, again, that I have a game development background and the Mark Cernys of the world and all of our different HQs are so mindful of this, how do we make it easier?

Because, yes, the big games are critical and important, but at the same time, the creators are always going to be born and raised out of smaller projects. So it's just continue to listen, and as soon as you stop listening and stop caring about them, then they go away. So we're just going to be laser-targeted on that for very many years.

This quote really struck me. They are really aggressive going after indie developers. Seems they may be contacting as many developers as they can about their platforms.

I think they did more than that. If I'm not mistaken. Hotline miami, luftrauser, spelunky, limbo, and probably mamy other indie are not being ported by original developer. There's another studio that handle the porting

So not only sony is contacting indie dev. They probably also set up the meeting between indie and studio that handle the porting.

Whether sony pays the bill for porting is another topic entirely.

OZ to finally release in America as a PS2 Classic!

But seriously, it sounds like a good change. They're putting aside a lot of fluff to make sure developers have a smooth process available to them, and I think this will result in more variety. Some crap pushing through, perhaps, but I'd hope the positive gains will outweigh the negatives.

This seems not only smart, but a realization of the natural progression of things in the video game market. I guess this also answers the question, "Why have a touch pad on the controller?" as this keeps that door open for indie devs that make touch input games as well. Those kinds of games don't personally interest me, but it does indicate an inclusive mindset from Sony regarding PS4, and that's a good thing. Also, more freedom equals more ingenuity on the part of developers.

This is great news.

I didn't consider this till you said it and it makes a lot of sense.

A lot of games that want to be on tablets and phones can easily transition onto the PS4 and vice versa. I can see how games like Year Walk or Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery would be a better experience with a touch pad vs an analog stick, to navigate, swipe, and click with intuitive precision for these kinds of games. It won't be perfect every time but it gives them options.

Who would have thought Sony had such a capacity to adapt and evolve? If you go back just a couple of years, you'd think you were looking at an entirely different company. After lumbering through a generation of blunders and general lethargy, all of a sudden they're doing and saying all the right things.

I can't be the only one who's a bit nervous by all the good news, no? I'm still anticipating the Achilles heel for the ps4. :/ dammit

Nah, I feel the same way. It's hard to believe that Sony can nail all of these things almost perfectly without making some serious misstep.

With every bit of good news, my stomach tightens in fear of bad news. Really bad news.

what pretense is there for this exactly? they've been hitting all the right notes for the past few years now. just be excited :)

As long as the store has tiers, something that's very fluid, that's great -- like, somehow, big titles get highlighted, as well as independent, but great, quality titles. Ie; "Big game of the month", and "independent game of the month" or something to that effect.

Hopefully they have a couple of moderators who pay a lot of attention to the store, and its structure, and have to abide by some sort of assisting guidelines to determine quality as opposed to simply judging by their own tastes.

Believe me, I am excited. It's a small worry that I try to keep quiet. I don't think anything at this point (save a sudden financial drought) will stop me from getting a PS4 at release.

Maybe even a game too :P

It'll probably be the price. Even if the system itself isn't that expensive, I kinda expect a tiered online system with a significant monthly fee if you want all the bells and whistles, like video streaming and such.

So if it's, hey, these guys are developing content for Vita, and we like the team, so we send them Vita kits as loaners for free. Or waiving patch fees for independent developers, if they need that support, then we're totally behind it.

That's pretty big news right there, if Microsoft don't follow suit, I can see them being left behind in terms of digital releases.

Sounds fantastic for smaller developers and devs that want to go experimental. Here's to hoping it doesn't become a landfill of clones and in-game-purchase scams like the mobile space.

In fact, I do wonder what kind of effect this has on the pricing of downloadable titles.

That's great, but what about SCE's huge issue of region approval? Every region with their own PS Store with their own submission process with different content in each store...fix this.

At the PAX booth of the future...

Booth Name: Mega Gamers Booth.
Sony: Why aren't you playing games?
Tired-looking games: They are too many of them...

Adam Boyes has been an amazing force for change in the short time he has been at Sony. Great guy, and gets what is needed.

This seems to only affect SCEA. SCEEurope is still asking for concepts and all that shit.

If that's true, then it's a massive shame. We could see some really interesting independent stuff coming out of Europe. And better still, Japan. I really hope this becomes a SCEW thing - I thought they were going to put an end to this geographical separation a few years back.

Getting back to Japan - why haven't we seen much downloadable indie stuff from them this generation on any platform? I'd have thought that's where all the best downloadable stuff would have come from if you'd asked me at me back in 2005.

Phil Harrison was actively trying to put an end to it but it seems like he hit a roadblock (probably the rivalry between divisions). Sony are idiots if they think that keeping that kind of organisation is going to help them going forward, as it's by far the worst aspect of the PSN.

This is not the same as game approval, right? Because if the PS4 store gets flooded with shovel ware like the iOS app store I won't use it much. I've pretty much stopped buying games on iOS because it's impossible to sort through all the trash and find the good stuff.

Ever since kaz Hirsh took over, there has been a sea change in Sony. Kaz taking over stringer is the best thing to happen to Sony in the last few years.
