Sony needs to improve PS4 shipment in NA

Sony will probably hold it all in and unleash on us at E3. They can have two home runs in a row, can't they?

Yes that's what I fully expect from Sony and it's a smart move on the whole. It just leaves us sitting here twiddling our thumbs wondering what their Fall lineup actually holds. Sony ninjas keep that ship watertight. MS could learn a thing or two from them.

And neither Titanfall or Infamous is going to move many consoles. Titanfall will get most of its sales on 360.

I think TF will actually move XB1's, maybe even enough to win MS March NPD, although I don't think that's the most likely outcome. I don't see TF being big enough to change the momentum/trajectory that XB1 is on currently though. A pricedrop will have a much better effect in the US and UK although I have no idea what they can do outside those countries as they just don't have the mindshare nor is their offering nearly as compelling outside the US or even the UK.

The lack of leaks we have gotten from Sony regarding the PS4 is a shocker. Big difference from the PS3 days. Aside from the Orbis spec sheets, the only major thing I can remember is the prototype controller that we saw days before the reveal. Even pricing was miscalculated, with speculation it would be in the $500-$600 threshold, higher than the proposed ones for the Xbox One.

Sony was a mess during last gen in terms of keeping secrets. There was even that time during E3 08 where they had their lineup leaked because someone managed to sneak into their rehearsals and gather all the details on what they were showing.

Went to toys r us, Walmart, Sams club, Meijer, and target today. Nothing in stock. Ordered one of the February 22nd ones from Amazon and my shipment arrival got bumped up from the 26th to the 19th.

Looks like Amazon put more up for pre-order for Feb 22nd. http://amzn.com/B00BGA9WK2

Gone already?

Yes I can only surmise that those working at Sony in respect to the PS4 seem to respect the secrecy more than those working at MS for the XB1. Perhaps they are more satisfied with how things are going or the direction they are taking, I dunno. It's a very stark contrast though.

We just have to look at when halo 3 launched to compare. Does anyone know how much it boosted consoles on release?

I remember when the lid was blown off of the '09 conference because of a leaked Qore episode. PSP Go and all.

It's amazing how the two brands have completely reversed roles this generation. It truly shows when you have a box that is developed with games in mind from the get-go and one that is trying to tackle everything at once. Xbox 360 was a games machine, PS3 was an all-in-one device.

I guess the hope is ->

Xbox One March NPD :

395,000 units (thank you Titanfall)

PS4 March NPD:

83,000 units (inFamous LOL)

(and them both apparently selling the same in February)

Except they won't do anything like that for Titanfall. I know you get sales bumps for titles, but you need constant, regular new titles for any bump to stick, and neither platform has those yet. Plus I would expect plenty of those early adopters will be a lot of the potential Titanfall audience - I'm not sure how many people are honestly holding off buying an xbox one for Titanfall but didn't already buy in for next gen CoD, BF4, DR3, Forza 5 etc.

Ps4 stock should start to normalize after Japans launch IMO.

.

based on what though? stock seems to come in, and then go out. Adding another major market won't help Sony keep stocks on shelves. IMO it'll take several months during the quieter summer for supply to catch up with demand.

In some ways this is good for Sony - as long as they aren't losing customers that are too impatient to wait - having broad distribution means they can monitor and adjust for specific market demand fluctuations while keeping overall production capacity high, and then more predictably ramp down as needed later in the year (or keep it going).

MS seem to have hit a cliff in the US and having only 13 markets for distribution they kind of have nowhere to go with their production. They're releasing in tier 2 markets soon but I think they could have moved on those quicker in hindsight.

NA/EU I can understand them being more secretive/strategic with their announcements
but there's just no explaining scej
things must be really really behind

I am not the one making that argument, I'm just proposing a scenario for sales in which they could potentially catch up in the upcoming months thanks to Titanfall

There WILL be some people who buy an Xbone instead of a PS4 because of the no stock situation for PS4. It won't be a significant amount of people though.

Well based off of the NPD archive

2006 for comparison

Code:
Dec 2006 - Xbox 360 - 1100K

Halo 3 launched November 20, 2007

Code:
Oct 2007 - Xbox 360 - 366K
Nov 2007 - Xbox 360 - 770K
Dec 2007 - Xbox 360 - 1260K

Too bad we don't seem to have Nov 2006 NPD archived

It is a pretty much perfect flip of directions for both companies. Oddly so. Albeit the PS3 was developed to be a games machine with the Cell being powerful just a pain in the ass to work with. [i.e. if they had just designed the PS3 to be an all-in-one device they wouldn't have gone with the cell]

I know. I'm just using your comment as an entry for a counter argument - many others have said Titanfall will bring xbox sales increases etc

I am thinking actually that the system would go from an average of 150k a month to maybe 220k-240k for at least the month of March. Which would be quite nice. Of course, I'm not sure if it's a 4 or 5 week month or how that works, I don't follow NPD closely enough to know that heh

Halo 3 wouldn't be a valid comparison as it was launched during the holidays and we don't know what was the typical holiday bump and what was due to Halo.

It appears the Xbox 360 sold 511k for the month of November in 2006.

True although I tried to provide the previous years holiday numbers for comparison to see how much over those it was but the data was limited.

The other problem was that the PS3 launched in 2006 so using those numbers to compare hw sales is going to be flawed from the get go.

I was actually just looking at the NPD for Jan 2008 to see if that would provide a better comparison. Somehow the PS3 outsold the X360 that month and reading the reactions are quite entertaining

Edit: Thanks Key2001 for the info. I'm still curious how good a comparison we can make considering the number of uncontrollable variables [PS2 was still selling a lot unlike modern last gen consoles, a large title might have a larger overall effect at the holidays proportionally, 360 might have had a more compelling library 2 years after launch versus XB1's 4 and a half months etc.]

What's a big title for 360 that came out in an off month like March or April? One that started a new ip? It will still be hard to calculate if the difference could be comparable due to the fact that the 360 was the cheaper system, which they don't have going for them either at this point.

Looking at the release dates perhaps Oblivion would be a good comparison? It's not a new IP but it's a first elder scrolls on consoles and it's also on PCs so might be comparable to Titanfall in that regard

Was released March 20, 2006 just months after the X360 launched. PC version was also day and date with it.

Are Feb/Mar 2006 sales available for 360? With the 100+ million MS probably paid for TitanFall plus marketing costs they will incur flooding the market with advertising I wonder how many units they would need to sell to justify the cost incurred.

I've been having trouble finding them if they are available. I know multiple gaffers have their own numbers that they keep track of so I'll PM a couple and see if I can't get the numbers.

MS marketing is odd in that it seems to be far less effective than it actually should be. Surface, Zune etc. all had large advertising campaigns and still struggled immensely. For the XB1, MS paid bucket loads in advertising for Europe with little to no effect. I think they paid 20 million euro in advertising in Spain yet only sold roughly 36,200 units by the end of January versus PS4's 181,000. So they roughly spent 550 Euro in advertising per XB1 sold.

Obviously MS advertising in the US and UK will have a far greater effect than in other countries but I'm not sure it will tip it in their favors enough

Any idea on when stock should begin to normalize?

Retailers here in Canada (Toronto area, at least) are still getting them in small amounts. Not that I'm in a hurry to buy one, but I am thinking about getting one in the near future.

from the beginning they should have focused on the 13 countries xbox 1 are in and a few more.

With inFamous coming, i think they shipment will increase before the release.

I absolutely disagree as a Finnish, who got a console at launch for the first time without 5-9 months of waiting, like on the past two launches. It's of no importance to me personally, whether the system is readily available in NA or not, and I think they should cater their strongest region on firstmost basis. The PS3 selling over half of its +80 million in Europe seems to have changed their tactics, which is definitely good for us living in the old continent.

Hi guys. First post.

I've been interested in how fast ps4 is still selling. Noticed its available on amazon us and theres less that 999 so can be tracked and measured as at least how fast its selling there.

About 30 mins ago it was at about 840ish. Now its at 732.

Anyone want to track it as I know lots are interested in this.

It's going pretty fast, 5 or so per minute.

Maybe people missed my last post (damn this site moves fast).

Now theres 578......

572... haha. I'm just gonna set a reminder to check every 15 minutes and come back when it's sold out so we can observe the sales curve.

edit: 4 sold as I typed that. 1 sold as I typed THAT.

Ups lost the one I ordered from amazon. Spent all morning tracking one down. Walmarts in my area got a shipment today, of the six stores I visited, five sold out in less than half an hour. Finally found a store in the sticks and got their last one.

Before I could purchase it, two more people asked and one person called about them.

Just happy to finally have one myself. :)

just throwing it out there. Went to costco the other day and i was in the queue when i say this guy holding a ps4 like nobody's business. I was genuinely surprised, thought it was hard to get one online let alone in stores..This was in manhattan btw, east harlem

Costco seems like that spot, from GAF reports.

Their selling fast considering the times over there in us.

Saying that they were at 501 and now its at 525.

So sold -24 in last few mins. So a bad last couple of mins for sony. If it carries on like that Microsoft will soon overtake them..... :)

i dont think its fair to compare Titanfall a new IP...to Halo 3, the third installment of a mega franchise....

Well people are acting like its going boost xbox sales to huge amounts and the boostthe 360 received from halo 3 would be the upper limit to what titan fall could boost the one.

I think MS will win March NPD simply because the PS4 will still be supply constrained, especially after just barely launching in Japan. Lack of PS4s + Titanfall moving a few consoles (though not nearly as much as some people expect) should it on top. If MS can't top PS4 in March, they won't be doing it till Halo 5 launches.

Well people are acting like its going boost xbox sales to huge amounts and the boostthe 360 received from halo 3 would be the upper limit to what titan fall could boost the one.

Yup, and those expectations are absurd. We need not looking further than the Wii U to see that 1 game doesn't change everything. The only thing that's going to help the X1 is a price cut (so long as Sony doesn't undercut them again). In fact going by what I see online, I'd say a good amount of the people buying an X1 for Titanfall have already done so.

Titanfall will get most of its sales on 360.

I'm sorry, but this is incredibly wrong. The vast majority of people have no idea it's even coming out for 360. It will sell most on the One, but a majority of those (particularly in the first month) will be to people who already bought Ones.

Yeah. There hasn't been a single significant leak from Sony during the past year. Its been very atypical of the company. They probably send somebody that looks like Kratos to have a "quiet chat" if somebody leaks.
