When they are revealed, at least you won't be waiting too long. Think of it this way, what benefit do you get out of officially knowing that FF7R actually exists? None, really. You're going to be waiting years, and eventually, a lot of you are going to be upset about why it was announced so early. It's better to wait in uncertainty, because you can put it away in the back of your mind, since you don't know any better. Once you know of something, and have to wait a very long time, then it's just tedious. Game announcements shouldn't be further than 18 months out in my eyes in a worst case scenario. Ideally, they should be 12 months. That's plenty of time to get the messaging right, and consistently deliver interesting news to keep fans engaged.
The early generation is what really messed it up, because you're forced to show a lot of content that can take a long time getting ready. SCE is at a stage now however, where they're in a position to begin controlling that flow. A lot of those old games are soon to be released, but since they've taken so long, other projects being under the shadows allows them to be revealed and released in a more timely manner. But then there are scheduling issues, and it's a vicious cycle.
2-3 years between announcement and release is just too much, and there have been several cases of that already just from SCE. No one wants that. Not the publisher or the fans. I think that's part of why people are frustrated with SCE too. There were several games announced in 2013 that aren't yet released. Uncharted 4, Rime, The Witness, Shadow of the Beast, and I might have even forgotten something. Even worse is that the delayathon is made public, and that then annoys fans more.
The delayathon is something that needs to remain hidden, and not exposed to the world. That's how it was in the past after all. He may have been as strong as a bull, as quick as a cat, this and that, but he was in the shadows.
