Sony Slams Microsoft TV Deals

MS concerned about Sony's 1080p plans, Sony concerned about MS' TV/Movie download plans, these guys really look out for each other.

Yup, these guys are so afraid that one company will fart and the other won't be there to smell it.

Am I not a Sony consumer if I go to see a Columbia Pictures film? Am I not being removed from the equation when they offer that very same film only on their own proprietory HD format (Bluray)? If they respected their Columbia Pictures film fans, Sony would give them the opportunity to watch Sony HD content on the player of the consumer's choice. Instead, they are only offering this HD content to those who buy their proprietory format (which is touted to be the higher end) and is also much more expensive. Thus, their statement is hypocritical.

am i not a microsoft consumer since i use Windows XP and their latest version of Office? why don't they put all their Xbox360 games on the PC or PS3? i dont want to have to buy their competing product, but i'm still a consumer of their products. i dont see why i have to pay extra to play games on their specialty product

Thats funny. If core owners are interested in this TV deal, they can now buy the new bigger HD and feel confident in that they saved a hunny by waiting, and arent stuck with a 20GB model. If you are gonna flame microsoft, flame them for not starting with a bigger drive. Still its all good for xbox owners, they have choices.

Sony really really needs to outline what they will do in this Movie trailers/TV shows deal fast! They are too damn tight lipped.

Now SONY is attaking MS (after months of MS attacks ^^) an now all the Xbots unite :lol
The SDF's guard has been let down and now their weak point is exposed; time to strike while vulnerable for massive damage.

Am I the only one who wishes the gaming press would stop paying attention to the PR guys, the corporate suits, and the execs, and only interview the guys on the frontlines; the guys who actually make the games? I couldn't give a rats ass what Phil Harrison has to say, what Peter Moore has to say, or what Reggie has to say.

Maybe it's just because of election season, but this shit is starting to irritate me.

FACT: Kutaragi-san and Kaz have Core System without Optional HDDs.
Sony Says: Microsoft feel free to send some HDDs for us.
i LOL'd HAAAAAAAARD!!!!

Old news. Most people who bought X360 realize that retard pack is truly made for it's name.

SONY stop living in the past, difference between no HDD and 20GB HDD is close to none when you want to store HD content.

MS and Sony **** you in their own ways... each of them give you a reach around here and there... unless you're a 360 core owner, then you get a splinter riddled plunger in your ass while being forced to watch Martha Stewart...

Sony +1 regardless, till refuted by MS... Unless it's Major Nelson doing this, then it's -1 for MS... We need scoring tables for these PR games...

It'd actually be pretty funny if 1-2 years from now, the Core system actually becomes the best seller of all the systems out. I'm sure a lot of those people who made the PS2 and PS1 sell 100+ million systems each had no problems with a/v cables, wired controllers, and memory cards, *shrug*

:lol Man I love this industry. Maybe Microsoft should issue a statement saying Sony's console price shuts out half the gaming population? Then the industry would be REALLY funny. At least they don't call Nintendo kiddy anymore.

Just half?!?

Efriends until the end!

you are adding me back right?

Not to get off the subject isnt the whole concept of downloading TV shows moot with Torrents still in existence?

If you couldn't afford the Premium 360 or the $99 hard drive add-on, what good does it do you that the $499 and $599 PS3s you can't afford both have hard drives?

Since Sony's plan is so much better, maybe they could shed a little light on their TV and movie download system?

Is Apple stupid for splitting up its iPod userbase into those who can watch video and those who can't?

apple is stupider than both sony and microsoft combined

"PlayStation 3's content is designed for everyone to enjoy right out of the box"

Oh really? Does this mean that they decided to start shipping component or HDMI in their box now? Funny, I was under the impression that if I wanted to watch Blu-Ray movies in HD, I would have to buy something extra because the PS3 won't play movies in HD "right out of the box".

DING DING DING DING! WINNER!......how much are these cables? I know hdmi cables can be had for cheap now days, but doesnt the ps3 use special component cables? How much is Sony asking for those?

I hate Sony more and more each day. If they would just keep their mouths shut I wouldnt mind them. I will be getting a ps3 though....not because of sony, but for the games made by other game companies that may skip an xbox 360 version. Just not sure when I will pull the trigger.

not sure about that...MS should have just bit the bullet and signed a deal with apple to have itunes on 360...hell, MS owns part of apple, so why not?

well technically, since the PS3 uses the same component cables as PS2, those go for about $30 retail (which is actually $10 cheaper than MS's cables retail). There's also a bunch of 3rd party cables if one is so inclined.

I still think they should've included them with the system though.

Of course Sony and MSFT both have valid points at times regarding the competition, but damn it's all so shallow compared to the funny shit that used to go on between Sony and Sega back during the PS1 Vs Saturn era.

Wow, this thread has become a self-righteous jerk magnet.

Things I see that are stupid about the Xbox store:

No Zune integration
No way for there to be long-term storage
Microsoft is now running three digital content stores and they don't interoperate

Core system owners are not necessarily left out. It's very possible that when Live Anywhere rolls out for the PC that this WMV content could be streamed to core systems just like Apple's iTV will do with iTunes content.

Sony needs to stop doing this. They keep making assumptions about Xbox 360 without having any clue about MS's plans. Sony's knee jerk reaction to the 1080p announcement and this makes Sony look like they weren't prepared for any of this. Whether that is the case or not.

Their music service has been out for months. It's called Urge.

Zune has it's own music service which is exclusive to Zune owners and it uses Microsoft Points to buy music. Microsoft just closed up their Plays For Sure compatible MSN music store and are now going the exclusive route that Apple went with iPod/iTunes. The question is when is Zune music store coming to Xbox 360?

ManaByte said:

Urge is MTV's music store which is Plays For Sure compatible. It is not Microsoft's music store. Zune has it's own exclusive store like iTunes.

Is this real?

And if so, Sony has missed a great opportunity here. They should have announced a "trade-in" policy for the so-called "tard" 360s.

"Do you own a tard 360? Well, bring it in to any Sony Store and get $150.00 dollars off a new Playstation 3! When we have them in stock.

I don't know what everyone's arguing about. Is it not true that Core owners are pretty much SOL?

Why would they be SOL ? They still have the option to buy an HDD if they want downloadable content.

It's not like they are locked out of the option to upgrade.

Just to recap this "conversation" between MS and Sony:

Microsoft: We're opening an online store to sell TV shows and rent movies, in regular and HD.

Sony: All of our consoles come with a HDD, yours don't.

....

I think Microsoft's next line should be, "I don't think you understand what we said." Seriously, of all the counter arguments, that was one of the weakest possible, and worded poorly no less.

MS does have lots of issues to address - storage capcity, Zune connetivity, price - all of which are fair game. But Sony's response is the definition of weaksauce damage control.

This PR seems like nothing but pure spin doctoring.

Show us your hand instead Sony. Quit putting down the competition and show us what you have to offer.

Yea, $100 for a 20GB drive, i wouldn't call rape an "option".

....but premiums are $400. so how are core owners SOL when they can just pay the extra $100 whenever they want to get the hard drive? (and yes, 100 is kinda rapage)

fixed. Now, continue:

The merit of making any counter argument to what MS announced right now is severely questionable in the first place. But if they're determined to do it, pointing out that MS themselves have limited their marketplace by making the HDD an optional, pricey and proprietary component of the 360 which happens to be absolutely mandatory for this service to work, certainly isn't the weakest argument to be made.

So this stuff is on Marketplace only right now? Any chance it will turn up on the Zune store? That would even up their content to iTunes and fix the potential storage issues on 360 (though i suppose you cant really build up a libary with this rented content so there isnt much of a storage issue). It would also help make more sense of why they suddenly decided to allow wmv streaming for everyone.

what is sony going to say when MS flips the read/write switch on external drives? Ms could easily do this. Just allow 360's to write video and music files to external drives. Storage issue solved. Huge GAF thread, etc, etc.
