Sooo.. that "rape joke" during the Killer Instinct demo [Microsoft apologizes]

It was a fighting game. Not a forced sexual encounter. There's your fucking context.

Because people in the general gaming community never compare losing in a fighting game to rape.

The best part is, you know they had like 8 scriptwriters looking over it and not even raising an eyebrow at how awkward it is. Just, good lord.

Seems like a lot of people are ignoring the "just let it happen" half of the joke with their defenses. It's kind of key to the whole rape-y perception, guys.

EDIT: Just relayed the context and quote to a female friend. Her face fucking FELL as soon as the words left my mouth. Never seen her so instantly deflated. Now, I'm sure they probably didn't exactly MEAN it to be a rape joke, but they should have fuckin' better known better.

Nobody on stage mentioned anything about rape.

OP creates a thread with the word "rape" in the title and talks about how he/she is inexplicably convinced that Microsoft was referencing rape or joking about rape in that clip.

Who is being more insensitive here?

regardless of the intention, I wouldn't use the phrase during the event because of the p. obvious connotation

but that's just me

What obvious connotation? It didn't seem to be so obvious to many many people. Would it have been so obvious had the trash talk been between two males?

I wonder how some people manage to function in daily life if something like that offends you in behalf of someone who clearly didn't get offended.

Yeah, because video games (especially violent ones) aren't notorious for rape culture or anything, right?

I guess people just look for anything to be offended by.

I'm pretty sure I've told friends similar things when beating their ass in video games, rape never crossed my mind.

People using the word "rape" during trash talk is disgusting but this is really stupid.

.. what phrase? what connotation?

i came into thread expecting to see the guy say "I'm raping you now," and I woulda been like "oh guys, you gotta choose your words more carefully, even if you say that while you're actually gaming." But, he didn't say that.

He didn't say anything?

How is this getting more play than the near complete absence of female characters?

Exec's really listening to gamers, women don't sell, not even the sexy ones.

I had to cut out 2/3rds of the way through, other than Dead Rising 3, were there any other non-white males?

Context was a person beating the shit out of another person in a fighting game.
Exactly. And the crazy part is I know that parts of the internet are so sensitive (or love a scandal) that I immediately thought "someone on GAF is going to read that as a rape joke and have a fit". I mean...damn. I'm not saying the OP shouldn't question it, just stating that I didn't find it offensive but I knew someone would take it there.

No one is ignoring the "Just let it happen" part, the thread more or less revolves around it. Watching the link the OP again, the "Wow, you like this?" part seems much more suggestive of rape.

the person who made the "just let it happen it'll all be over soon" comment during the presentation

the phrase "just let it happen it'll be over soon" with the connotation of sexual violence that has been discussed on every page of this thread

Because that phrase has never been used before, other than rape? Did no one ever get cod liver oil as a child?

The phrase is used innocuously in other contexts, but in this context? Yeah it suggests rape. If you recognize the phrase has been used as a rape joke, then it's obvious why it was inappropriate.

It was a fighting game. Not a forced sexual encounter. There's your fucking context.

It's called innuendo.

I think it's pretty telling that you made the connection between the statement and rape. You clearly understand why some people view it as a rape joke - why didn't you find it offensive?

You don't need to use the word "rape" to imply it, especially in a context where rape culture is so prevalent.

The mentality that people "are looking for things to be offended by" really annoys me in these threads. If they didn't make a shitty joke, people wouldn't comment about them being shitty jokes. We're not "looking" for things to be offended by, we're just trying to watch a goofy video games press conference. Preferably without sleazy jokes. And regardless of the intent, it still comes across as a common rape joke.

And to get Kotaku on this, maybe if there were more women on the staff writing these things, maybe there wouldn't be oversights like this!

.

Because that phrase is used without rape connotations? Because it was uttered during a non-breakable combo? Because in context it had everything to do with an unbreakable combo? Because I've played KI games and knew she wasn't going to break out of that combo?

I also await someone screaming racism for the MGS 5 trailer for no reason other than black kids were shown. It's the internet. For every racist or sexist idiot there will be a person who finds racism and sexism in any/everything. But I really don't want to get into this. If you feel like I'm a monster because I know the sensitivity boundaries of the internet after being here for so long then fine. Label me an insensitive monster. I know who I am. Feel free to have the last word, I'm done.

This just shows how over sensitive the gaming community has become when it comes to talking about or to women.

In no way did any non-guilty conscious person see that as a rape joke. At best it was a needle joke. Like when you went to the doctor for a jab as a kid or had an operation while awake. They said it all the time. It's to do with pain. The pain will be over soon. Sure you can apply pain to rape but that's you and your mind making that connection. Rather than seeing the woman as a human, you see her as a woman and filter out every other possible connection and think "rape".

It seems to me they meant, "Losing is unavoidable for you. Luckily, the match will be over soon and the unpleasantness that comes with losing will end."

The idea that MS would include a rape joke into a press conference seems a little ridiculous to me.

Yeah, because video games (especially violent and competitive ones) aren't notorious for rape culture or anything, right?

I can't say that i've participated in 'rape culture' while playing shooting games.

what

the

fuck

But you clearly made the connection in this circumstance between the statement and rape. That's why I'm wondering why you aren't offended by it. It doesn't matter if the statement is also used in contexts like a dentist appointment or whatever that don't imply rape, but you clearly made the connection here.

Rape joke? Ohh come on now.

I didn't get that at all.

It made me uncomfortable because I instantly knew how it could be interpreted, and was a good example of the kind of things that come out of guy's mouths when they speak before they think.

Clearly wasn't intended that way, but of course that really doesn't matter when you're speaking in front of an audience.

LOL 9 PAGES

just watched the video and didnt even pick it up

apparently its the "just let it happen itll be over soon".

its a fighting game wtf. taking it out of context.

will reggies famous "my body is ready" now become a way to say your body is ready to be raped?

ehhhhh

Really, how many people wandered into this thread without knowing right away what line was the "rape joke"? You may feel that it could be taken a different way, but you know what the discussion is about without having to find the quote.

the

fuck

You've never once heard the word "rape" used in competitive multiplayer games to denote having killed or beaten an opponent? Or teabagging? That's rape culture and it is prevalent in video games, whether or not you yourself partake in it

Since you made the connection, yes.

Hmm I didn't get that insinuation at all whilst watching the conference. (maybe I was just being slow :P)

It's kind of like when someone says something innocent and you get "That's what she said" as a response.

Everyone needs to chill out and stop looking for things which aren't there.
