Spiritual successors better than the original

Even though ICO is awesome, SotC is in a whole nother level.

I strongly disagree. System Shock 2 was scarier, richer gameplay-wise, and the story was not predictable as fuck like Bioshock's.

Also, space > underwater

Maybe the story wouldn't have been as predictable if it
wasn't just a copy/paste job of System Shock 2's plot with an even worse ending
.

And yeah, the gameplay was severely casualized and as a result was completely unbalanced making it extremely boring to play through.

Prototype > Hulk as well. I've yet to play Prototype 2 though.

Dark Souls > Demon's Souls

Demon's is a sweet game, but Dark fixed all the problems and greatly improved the graphics as well.

Does anyone want to agree that Xenoblade is a spiritual successor to Xenogears? If so, I think Xenoblade is better in each and every way to Xenogears.

I just started my first playthrough of xenogears after beating xenoblade. Kinda meh so far. Hope it gets better.

Yeah, but Bayo is the spiritual successor to DMC1, not any of the other ones.

Yeah, you are right.

They really aren't related like that. Xenoblade if anything seems to be the attempt by Takashi to not make Xenogears. That's what his talks about the game seemed to say. Xenosaga is the spiritual succsesser of Xenogears.

Kind of surprised how uncontroversial Paper Mario > Mario RPG is. Would have figured nostalgia would be a more potent force.

Well, Xenosaga is moreso the spiritual successor. Different canon entirely but a couple of throwbacks to Xenogears and similar designs.

Xenoblade only shares the Xeno prefix and that's about it. Perhaps you could call it a loose spiritual successor.

I actually think that plot wise, it's pretty similarly themed.... well losely, kinda, sorta.

No way, not to mention various aspects of the game such as consistently good music and well integrated mech battles (both of which Xenogears accomplished) didn't happen until the third game. Even with the second disc, the original is the more solid experience of the four games.

Eh, for me the 2nd disc completely ruined the experience. Then again I didn't play it until it was on PSN. Maybe I'd feel different if I played it back when.

Oh just wait until you get to Xenogears' second CD. One of the biggest clusterfucks in gaming history, imo.

Xenogears is good, but if we consider Xenoblade a spritual successor, it's undoubtedly superior.

I wouldn't agree with it being a spiritual successor going by name alone, Xenoblade was supposed to be titled Monado IIRC. The name change may have occurred simply to attract players with name recognition.

I'm gonna get massacred, but Donkey Kong Country Returns. If simply just for the level design and speedrunning.

Also Mario Galaxy. Mario 64 had the better controls, but that's about it.

I agree with Galaxy (I haven't played DKRC much). It's more imaginative. Yes it is more linear, but it is better off for it. Always doing something new. Tons of levels.

Dark Souls > Demon's Souls.

Not by a whole wide margin, Demon's Souls is hella good... but Dark Souls is kinda like... bigger, more complex, more areas, more bosses, more stuff to do. It feels similar but it just seems like the more polished game. And the game is a whole lotta harder IMO. The two dragon guys, one of them is big and the other is small, was probably one of the hardest bosses I've ever faced.

Portal is far better, for obvious reasons, to Narbacular Drop.

For me at least, I consider Resident Evil to be a spiritual successor to Sweet Home, a better one at that for the theme. I rather have a Sweet Home 2 though.

Oh aye, Prototype was great, much better than Hulk. Just a shame they couldn't have gotten a Marvel license and made it Venom The Game like it should be.

the only thing better about SS2 is that it is harder and it doesn't have a recycled plot. Oh wait, that is TWO things. I played Bioshock first so the plot part didn't bother me.

Any Risen fans over Gothic 3? Never played Risen, but I might get Risen 2.

Vanquish>RE4

And this is coming from someone who thinks RE4 is essentially flawless and near perfection in gaming form. Because Vanquish is all that and then some.

CRACKDOWN > GTA (?)
Nice. But Jones wasn't involved with GTA III and I'd say that Crackdown is a bit too far removed from GTA 1+2 to count as spiritual successor... or compare them directly to say which one is better.
GTA2

edit:
Are these really related, or are you just naming two games in the same genre? :P
Someone needs to brush up on their gaming history. :p
