Splatoon 2 Invitational Tournament now Live

might be just me, but I don't see the appeal of Splatoon as an observer sport

Do you play Splatoon? I personally don't enjoy watching competitive games that I don't play. Some things are tougher to understand without the firsthand experience.

Compared to other shooters? Or just shooters in general?

been a long time since I played it, but it's very hard to follow what's going on on the observer cam, and Turf Wars isn't any good anyway. I watched the stream for a bit, but it just doesn't grab me

thing is, I don't follow other competitive shooters either, so that's a good point

Inkblot looks like a great map, I kind of hope that the endpoints for Rainmaker are one top of the hand/cloud things. It'll be absolutely brutal getting on top of those

Dynameu is destroying.

Deadbeat is holding on barely, but I'm calling this match from 2:15.

Were I betting man,

1. Dynameu
2. Blue Ringed Octolings
3. Deadbeat
4. Rising Moon

For posterity, I was right for at least the end of the Round Robin, but I'm sure it'll be definitive by the end of it all.

Is the lack of minimap showing ink coverage by design so the end tally is more exciting? As a spectator sport, not having view of actual progress unless they go back to overhead view is fairly annoying.

Now comes the good modes like rainmaker right?

FTFY :P

This is my biggest gripe as a player. I replayed Splatoon 1 recently and found it so much easier to play and no where to go with the gamepad map. I hope they patch one in.

I dont watch a lot of esports just some Smash and Street Fighter but this commentary seems to flow more like a real sport. Maybe it's me.

Players still access the full map by pressing X, it's what you use to superjump (which we've seen players in the tourney do).

We just aren't seeing when they use it due to the nature of spectator mode.

God, I would love to be in a Splatoon tournament. I'm not THAT good but I can definitely throw down in some Splatoon for sure. This has me so hyped for the sequel right now.

I like that the announcers are actually competent at commentating and not annoying.

Green and blue ink is amazing together, planet Earth from above :)

This looks very cool. Can anyone tell me what differentiates 2 (in simple terms) from the first game? Don't need to go super in depth, just curious because of the limited time I've watched the first and now this one, they look the same or very similar.

new story mode but, aside from that, it just looks like more of everything the first game had. More weapons, abilities, maps, customization options (now with pants).

* New weapons, clothes, specials, subs, etc
* New single player mode
* New "horde mode" called Salmon Run
* New stages, and multiplayer options

There might be more that hasn't been revealed yet

My partner & I are fuckin' ready for new Rainmaker since she always focuses on laying down a path for the Rainmaker. Ugh. These next 5 weeks are going to drag.

gameplay tweaks, new weapons, specials, new maps, old maps edited, new story mode, new online mode that was shown in direct, new type of equipment (pants iirc), and probably other stuff

This is so much easier to follow with spectator mode. I never really bothered with Splatoon streams before because of it, but this is fun to watch

Same here, I agree. I never watch esports but I would totally watch Splatoon 2 with this format. A game I understand and love, that makes a difference too.

Thanks everyone for the responses! I'm looking forward to grabbing this one for my Switch. It looks like a lot of fun. I'm a little worried that Splatoon 1 vets are going to wreck me at this point, but I'm still interested.
