Splatoon has surpassed 1 million sales world wide

We've been getting new IPs from Nintendo quite often recently.
  • Splatoon (duh)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Code Name: STEAM
  • The Wonderful 101
And these are just the high-profile ones.
Guess what sold better than all of those

Wii music

Wii music
As stated earlier...
Wii Music released at the height of the Wii's popularity. If Splatoon launched in a similar situation it would have sold way more.

Edit: meant to quote anihawk here
Plus Wii Music was exactly well-received by the fans, hence why we never got a sequel. W101 & STEAM straight-up bombed, Xenoblade got a limited release with a high-profile sequel on the way, & we all know what's up with Splatoon.

that's gotta be depressing for nintendo, when wii music sells three times as many units as splatoon. oh well, hope they make another ip next decade.

Your hyperbolic scenario can't happen anymore since wii music sold less than 3 million (2.6m or something?) And I am positive Splatoon will outsell it. The hype is real.

It won't outsell the biggest new ip nintendo has launched in the last years, Wii Party.

Splatoon has reached 1 million units sold in under a month, while, Wii Music, having years to get sales, has only reached 2.65 million (accord to Wikipedia). One month compared to several years. At the rate Splatoon is going, it could easily exceed that by this time next year (assuming Nintendo keeps the game fresh with frequent updates).

If anything, Nintendo is depressed that Wii Music didnt sell well at the time.

Guys you should know anihawk by now. he is kidding around.
Cept when it comes to metroid prime, he is 100% serious when he says he doesnt consider them really that good.

Oh don't worry, if that happens than Splatoon won't be a success because it failed to beat Super Smash Bros for the Wii U. Then it won't be a success because it failed to beat Mario Kart 8. Then it won't be a success because it failed to beat Pokemon X and Y. And then...

Having such great character design certainly helped them, I don't think I've seen that much fanart that soon after the reveal of a game in a long time.

Really? These are two completely scenarios. 1 million sales for a new IP on a console with a limited market share, let alone within one month is great. This IP is here to stay for now.

In 2008/2009 any video game with the Wii name on it could've made 1 million sales.

Now that I look at the source on the wikipedia page, it only says Hyrule Warriors shipped over a million. Are we sure it sold a million?

The next Splatoon needs a more distinct character for single player with a name and unique design if they want the IP to stick around like Mario/Kirby/Star Fox/Zelda/Metroid have.

The campaign was fun and final boss was amazing but single player was definitely an afterthought smh.

Agent 3 is good enough. And judging by the sales & fan art, I think Splatoon is fine in the distinct character front. The Inklings themselves are fantastic designs already, & are meant to be made for customization.

the truth is every game has a (marketing)budget, and not every game can get the same amount of budget as splatoon and mario kart, because not every game is going to sell like splatoon and mario kart. Not every game has the same appeal as these games either, codename steam was probably never gonna get more than 500K if it had the same budget as splatoon. Its one of these passion projects nintendo let IS do because of the success given to them by fire emblem awakening, a game nintendo had a decent budget behind.
The fact that fast-forwarding wasn't in the game until after reviews and release had come and gone surely must've hurt it amongst enthusiasts.

The canon Inkling stands out fine as far as I'm concerned.

I'm in tears laughing at these XD

I'm in tears laughing at you laughing at me.

They'll add Agents 5 and 6 for co-op. Maybe a 7 and 8 too.

Very impressive given the sales of the Wii U console itself. Sold more than Kid Icarus did on 3DS, I believe. I kinda wish they gave that game a similar marketing budget, truly, because I love it and want more people to as well!

Seeing at how it was marketed and the lack of Wii U game releases, this isn't surprising at all.
There is no lack of great Wii U games people don't have and could choose from. The fact Splatoon sells well is a combination of the game being unusually cool and how it is marketed.

Hopefully it will achieve to convince Nintendo there's a big market for cool, competitive online games.

The best about Splatoon is that it drove a lot of people to actually buy a Wii U for it in Japan

Splatoon is the future guys. I'm guessing Splatoon will be like Mario Kart and Smash.

Considering this game had one of the biggest marketing pushes I've seen from Nintendo,
(well, it isn't that hard to top not marketing at all)
I wonder how profitable the game actually will be when it's all said and done. It had a fairly quick development cycle if I recall correctly and wasn't exactly packed with content so the development costs probably weren't too bad, but I wonder how much the marketing cut into the money they made. I'm guessing pretty far. Still, if that means the difference between a viable IP and one that's DOA, it's worth it. Hopefully Nintendo learns this lesson going forward and stops sending games to die with no advertising what-so-ever.

That's probably a bit of a reach.

I thought it could get to 1 million eventually but it blew away expectations by doing so hardly a month after launch.

Congrats Nintendo, well played.

Not exactly. The Inklings in Smash are inevitable, the question is when. Smash 4 DLC or Smash 5? And no, DLC Mii costumes don't rule you out as playable (see Link).

As for Mario Kart, that I'm not sure, but I'm sure Nintendo would be more inclined to add the Inklings than most other non-Mario characters now that Splatoon is a hit (& it's not like The Pokémon Company is gonna allow Pikachu to be playable anytime soon). But that doesn't matter now since MK8's DLC is most likely done.

Didn't buy this game yet. May I ask if this game is only for multi-players? Any SP campaign content?
Yes, there's a 5-6 hour single player campaign (with a badass final boss). If you want more, the Amiibos will let you do bonus challenges by going through certain missions using different weapons (which will give you outfits, weapon variants, & minigames that you can play on the GamePad while you wait for an online match to start).

I'm not so sure.

This might become Nintendo's main multiplayer shooter and my guess is it goes the direction of Team Fortress 2 but on the NX and starts free to play with a massive, just massive, following all rabid for FRESH clothes and guns and this is one hell of a run on sentence:-(

Praise the lawd, this is becoming an established franchise! SO FRESH

Thanks a lot. Seems not plenty of SP content and this game was mainly designed for MP.

I need to consider if go to buy this game. I seldom play MP games on Wii U.

The online is actually really good, hence why they did 4 stress tests for Splatoon's servers.
