Square Enix's JRPG's: Looking Forward to Next-Gen

Vaan's at least better than Lightning.

I dunno. Lightning at least won points with me for being such a bitch to everyone else in the game. She might have been inherently a terrible person, but the rest of the cast sucked so hard that it was gratifying to see her be so awful to them. Vaan on the other hand contributed absolutely nothing while looking like a low-rent Posh Spice.

Oh GAWD no. FFXII would be almost perfect if it weren't for Vaan lol

I agree, although Vaan was so bland and secondary (even as a "main character") that he didn't even really harm the game for me. He might as well have not been there. XD

But just think about how great the game would have been if they had made Basch the main character.

From what i understand financial issues put Square into emergency mode, releasing tons of remakes and smaller games and putting all of their faith in the Eidos side of things...which is not a bad idea had they not assumed that Eidos franchises could make FF and Dragon Quest numbers and budgeted accordingly

I also assume FF13 sequels were due in part to trying to save money as they created a shitton of assets for FF13 that could be reused and repurposed instead of trying to make a new sequel

Vaan wasnt even the main character, he was just to be the medium by which the story was told(stupid i know), too bad it was with Revenant Wings that he became a better character, Lightning on the other hand just keeps getting worse, and making her into some kind of messiah on LR isnt helping

Sorry, but where was it confirmed that FFXIV: A Realm Reborn would have Lightning in it? I'm calling BS on that one unless there's a source

I hope that the ease of developing on the next gen consoles helps Square Enix make their games for cheaper, and take less time. Both of those hopefully (crossing fingers) let SE internally develop new IPs, or revisit old franchises. I dream the dream of days gone by.

I lost all faith in SE when it comes to JRPGs. So my expectations for this coming gen are low. And I fully expect to be disappointed nonetheless.

I worry about Square. I worry that they'll never understand what made them so great again. I worry that I'll get as hyped about XV as I did for XIII, and being subsequently soul crushed at how dreadful of a game it is AGAIN.

Everything I touched from Square in the 90's and early 00's was damn near PURE GOLD. Why don't you realize that, Square!

that is 100% correct..I was obsessed with AP for a year but I now I am over it since the officially stated no plans for a game.It is what it is.
Which is a bummer, because that universe seemed to have promise :(

Well, minus the face-wrapped thugs carrying AK's. The hell was that all about?

I dunno why I am worried about this new "look" development...Making CG with visual works then porting it over to Luminous sounds so expensive, inefficient and time consuming. Luminous looks awesome but let's hope it won't lead to protracted development and extreme costs.

I don't think they should adopt it for XV.They arenot experienced with this type of develpment and it may lead to even more delays with that project.Leave it for later and get the game done already.

The idea that they should match CG quality in every FF is ridiculous to say the least.I hope they skip it for XV if its gonna complicate things.

At least Lightning made for some good Rule 34 material.

Sorry, that's the only positive that I could muster.

Speaking of which, does her charactereven have a romantic interest? She's on game three. Or does Toriyama have such reverence for her character that he doesn't want her to "stoop down" to having sex with some dude or chick?

Not that every game needs a romantic interest, but it seems like a major omission.

its toriyama himself

Really SE just needs to get their head out of their ass when it comes to efficient game design. I don't know if that's a Japan thing or if its just a SE thing.

Still miffed about no Type-0.

While their games after FF10 suck, Bravely Default on 3DS is one of my most anticipated games of all time

So, i can fogive everything just for giving me something no other developer does these days, a proper artistic 2D JRPG, than some crappy generic 3D world

I want some turn-based JRPGs from Square-Enix. I'm not okay with every franchise of theirs becoming an action RPG.

The concept of this thread is insane.

"Square Enix clearly buckled under the cost pressures of AAA development this gen.

Now that next gen is an order of magnitude worse, I CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT GEN".

You're setting yourself up for severe disappointment.

Well...

-Final Fantasy XV is smoke and mirror's at the moment to my understanding. CG masquerading as gameplay, target renders, the whole nine yards.

-Kingdom Hearts III was, by Normura's own omission, announced too early.

-They wasted over a year making a 4 minute tech demo, also known as "Agni's Philosophy"

They ain't off to a good start.

yes the first trailer was target renders mixed with actual gameplay, second trailer was actual gameplay from beginning to end

Let's see....

I'll take a localized Type 0 ( which may only be fan-translated)

I'll take BDFF.(Published by Nintendo) And maybe a BDFF 2(if that's a thing and also likely published by Nintendo unless SE steps up).

I'll take a DQ7R localization for 3DS down the road(Most likely published by Nintendo).

I might go out on a limb and get Drakengard 3. If localized.
Japan onry

And as for old Squaresoft I'll look at MonolithSoft for that RPG goodness.

FFXV? LR? Show me GILGAMESH or go away.

ARR? MMO's ain't my thing. But I'll watch the GILGAMESH questline for sure.

SE Music? I'll likely be interested in that for sure.

Never liked Kingdom Hearts either. But they make good beat em up games. I'll give em that much.

---------------

I'd be more excited for XV but honestly it's just a cluster of CG and snippets of gameplay all mashed together confusing the player on what it wants to be. Show me how you play the game and maybe I'll be interested. Show me an example of how grand the world is and maybe I'll take you seriously. I don't play games to look at all the pretty colors. I play games for the game itself.

Maybe, but FFXI and now FFXIV have been more "final fantasy" than any of the other games since IX imo.

I have to agree. I'm REALLY looking forward to Final Fantasy XV, but I would love a new one based in a more fantasy setting that resembles FFTactics. Having characters where the classes clothes and such. Ever since FFX, the clothes for some of the characters and ESPECIALLY the random NPCs have been horrible. Trying too hard for futuristic but I don't like the designs of people walking around with clothes that are cut up and look like they're half shorts/half pants and crap.

Just seems over-designed and trying too hard.

Nah, the current version has already been in development for over two years according to SE. I think half of what we saw was normal gameplay, and the other half was heavily-scripted set piece gameplay. If you ask me I saw a noticeable difference in graphical quality between the normal battle footage, and the footage of Noctis running through what looked like action-packed rail corridors. The latter looked far better.

I don't think NIS and Gust will abandon PlayStation platforms this easily.

Oh we'll still get some niche JRPGs on PS4, though it's hard to say what those games will actually look like. A lot of niche JRPGs on PS3 basically look like high resolution PS2 games. I imagine Disgaea 5 will probably look really similar to Disgaea 4, just in 1080p probably.

Anybody who has a problem with Square Enix's output this gen, particularly FF13, owes it to themselves to try out Lost Odyssey. It's essentially Sakaguchi's FF13, and my favourite JRPG of the (console) gen.

Pretty much all the footage from the Sony conference trailer is CG, including the gameplay stuff - it appears to be target render CG stuff except for a few (maybe 5 seconds) shots. The "gameplay video" they released on the second day of E3 is almost all 'real' though. There is a lot of smoke and mirrors, but hopefully it's just because things weren't optimal performance-wise yet. It's hard not to recall FF13 06 when you see this, though.

To be fair LR is looking fine form a gameplay perspective, but that godamned engine needs to go away. The game dosn't looks good at all.

Also writing. At least XV seems way better than XIII saga, for the little we heard.

Speaking of which, does her charactereven have a romantic interest?

Hope.

Not really, since now he's a damned kid again, probably the real reason behind the change. Toriyama, you sneaky bastard!

If Lost Odyssey was FF 13 people would have been as dissapointed. The wrting in that game (outside of dreams) is atrocious.

I'll give you that the game is slightly more open.

A lot of the footage from the second trailer though was in the first trailer. It was at least the same battle being shown. The technical quality of that isn't what I would expect of a target render.

To me it looks like Square Enix basically took what they'd been working on since 2006, renamed it FFXV, eventually cancelled the current gen version, and added some segments to take better advantage of next-gen hardware. That's why I don't have a high degree of faith in the game yet. To me it's still Versus XIII. I'm withholding all judgment until it's actually out though.

If I had to choose between LO and XIII to exist I would easily choose LO. At least it knew what it wanted to be and didn't push unnecessary sequels.
