SSX Blur: When Wii controls go wrong....

Saw SSX Blur used for 24.99 at EB so I thought it would be a no brainer since I love the SSX franchise but....

..holy crap SSX Blur is a beast to actually get a hang of. I've played for an hour straight on the same slopestyle course, and I just don't have the skills to play this game. I can play GH tracks on Hard with 5 stars. However I can't execute a flip and grab combo successfully 10% of the time.

I won't even get to Uber Tricks because the only time I've got the chance to do one was in the Tutorial. I love everything about Blur but the controls. IMO they are too complicated. My biggest issue was with the nunchuk. I had no problem pulling off flips by themselves and landing them fine. However when you use the nunchuk to move/carve/boost/grab/ and using them all in a fast paced manner I just can't keep up with it. I tried changing the moving to both the nunchuk only and the analog only, and it's just too much for me. I played all the SSX games on my PS2 and was pulling off huge combos like crazy.

In some cases I can see the Wii have more intuitive, and fun control schemes, but Blur is too complicated for its own good. I wouldn't have a problem if you can use the analog stick for directional grabs, not moving the nunchuk.

I felt that the game worked fine. In particular, I LOVE the carving controls. Very, very slick. Grabs and flips were easy enough. IMHO, only the ubers felt tacked on and shoddily implemented.

I have never experienced a problem with the controls. Uber Tricks arent broken just take some time to master, once I got them down I probably have a success rate of 8/10. The game isnt perfect and could have used some more polishing but if a Blur 2 were to come out I would definitely buy it.

You serious? I played it when it came out and picked up the controls pretty quickly. Loved the carving, and the uber tricks were pretty easy to do once you got used to the proper motions. Of course the later uber tricks you unlock are harder to get a hang of due to the more complicated motions, but not impossible to pick up after a bit of practice.

I mastered all the basic uber trick within in an hour. Just hit the half-pipe in order to get them all down--they aren't hard to pull off at all.

I'm a huge fan of the series, as anybody here could vouch for, and I'll be plain: the controls sucked. They just weren't as good as the PS2 version.

That being said, it doesn't mean it can't get better, or that it was a bad game. But sometimes, more is not better.

I agree with you dude, I never played a game that required you to do some much with the controller at one time. I understand that what they wanted to do in using gestures for movement/tricks. But not every game will work with that. I can see people saying "if its not going to take advantage of motion controls then why make it for Wii". However there are some great DS games that don't use the touch controls in any major way.

It would have been better if they used the A button to preload, use the analog stick to do flips/twists. Then use C/Z/B for the grabs, while in air.

I found that SSX Blur controls pretty well. You could certainly say that the uber trick system can be unforgiving, if not a little tacky, but I actually welcomed the challenge of mastering the later ubers you can unlock. I found it to be a fresh experience. :D

I can accept that the uber tricks may not be easy to grasp for everyone and maybe even too much for some, but when you can't even do carving, flips or grabs properly; then I don't believe that the game is where the main problem lies.

From my experience, it took a bit of time to get used to the controls (more than 3 hours for me), and even more time to master them, but I did it, and I loved it. My advice : keep training. If you're skilled enough, and if you have the patience to assimilate the basic controls until they start to feel natural, the feeling will come eventually. Otherwise, no, this is probably not a game for you.

controls are fine. if you cant handle it then you suck and need to practice. the only problem is that really complex ubers require too much time to pull off making them worthless. if there's a blur 2 then they need to stick to simple shapes and give more room for error when doing the motion.

what are the stipulations for a SSX game to be "real"?

I imagine he only meant to imply that Blur was more of a combination of earlier SSX titles (with new aesthetics and music), rather than a brand new, original title in the series.

Blur is a port?

I have heard that the tracks are the same but i never knew it was a port =O

:lol

And EA definitely shoe horned PS2 DS2 controlls over to the Wii. It'll be interesting to see an actual SSX thats tailored towards the Wiimote.

I hated this game for a long time before loving it. It definitely has a steep learning curve. Especially slalom, which is incredibly hard (and MANDATORY!), but one day it just clicked and then I nailed it without problems ever since.

Don't give up on this game, it is tough to get a hang of but very rewarding and fun when you do. I'd go as far as calling it my favorite snowboarding game ever.

You've never played the game yet you were the first person to agree with the OP. WTF.

Intent never does showcase itself well on the internet, does it?

Exactly. SSX Blur controls take a while to learn. But when you do learn them, the game is such a joy to control. I can pull off all the advance ubers with ease. :D

Pretty much. It takes time to learn then becomes quite fun. There's still a bunch of flaws and room for improvement not just in the wii game but in the series overall.... but it's still a good game and worth giving it a rent at the very least.

i've read that you can change the controls so you turn with tilt and make grabs analog only. heard it makes slalom much easier as well but i've never tried.

Did you even play the game? If so, I'm interested to hear how you feel the control scheme is shoehorned and what you'd do to address it. And I'm not exactly sure how you gather that Blur isn't tailored toward the Wiimote.

I'll give it more time, I'm just saying at first these controls are daunting. Not very user friendly at all, and I can understand people not liking it. I love SSX games, so I'll keep practicing, but so far it's rough for me.

And as far as me "sucking" at the game, yeah I do suck at it so far. I don't know any one person that is great at all genres, control schemes etc. I have a friend who can 5 star GH songs on Expert, but suck balls in Halo 2.

ssx blur is an awesome game. I played that game for 2 weeks straight when it came out and beat it. So much fun.

and the controls are great.

Been meaning to go back to it and beat it with another character, but I just got mario strikers so thats postponed.

I got so addicted to this game at one point!
Give it a little more time, and to train for Ubertrick, go to the half pipe, the tutorial is useless.

I liked the controls and thought they were really well planned and laid out. The only problem was that the uber tricks weren't recognized as well as they should be and it was ultimately a game breaking problem.

There's nothing wrong with the controls at all IMO, they aren't that hard to master at all :lol :lol :lol :lol , but the first time I did slalom I wanted to die.

I hated the controls on this game too. rented and took it back the next day. I loved tricky on the cube so this was very dissapointing.

looking forward to the next ssx on the balance board!

When I first started playing the controls were horrible. So hard to control. but after a few hours of practice they were really slick, I love them. All except for Ubertricks, I have NEVER been able to perform an Ubertrick to this day. Other than that great controls.

I'm with you

I think the biggest hurdle I need to overcome is getting rid of the minset of playing SSX games on a dual shock controller. I'm definitely gonna give it more time, but I'm stopping for the night too much of a headache so far.

I think thats the reason why I had such trouble. I played the past game religiously and busting out moves were done almost automatically.

;_;

I just personally got the feeling that they took the general trick setup (from the PS2) games and mapped them as well as they could to Wii controls. It just didn't feel right. That said, I'm hopefull that next one will be more refined

So in a sense you enjoy it when you're able to pull of flash substance with zero effort?

Complaints about SSX Blur controls are merited at first... but once you get the hang of it after you've played it for a bit then you'll learn to love them.

I love how so many people believe that by being good at one game, suddenly they should be good at every game, even totally different ones.

Sorry, but you suck at SSX Blur. If you can't even perform a grab move or a flip, you absolutely and utterly fail. It's not the fault of the controls since many people can do some of the stuff pretty much flawlessly. It's a problem with YOU.

I mean, if the controls were busted, could somebody do THIS?

Please note that I pulled that off before even venturing on into Peak 2.

I think the controls were probably about as hard to get as when I first picked up SSX on the PS2 (although it's hard to remember). Ubers definitely needed more instructions though.

I hope for the next SSX they keep moving in the direction of Blur - towards 3/Tricky and away from the abomination of On Tour. Blur also did some things better than any SSX yet, most notably the awesome JunkieXL soundtrack.

The controls are obviously not going to come naturally after only an hour of play, so what were you expecting? The great thing about Blur is that after a certain point, everything 'clicks' and you're able to perform everything with ease, including the uber moves. This is, of course, after hours of practice.

A lot of people didn't give this game a chance simply because of the controls. A damn shame.

I got the controls down in about 30 minutes. It was frustrating at first to the point where I wanted to break the disc, but once I did get it, it was perfect. I could flawlessly pull off any uber trick or any other move.

Carving in this game is awesome and I had no problems with the Ubertricks.

My only problem with the game is that I usually suck at these kind of games (TH etc.) and this is no different :D . I'm just awefully bad at chaining tricks. Still a good game though.

Actually, this game really gives you a sense of accomplishment since you actually have to have some skill when pulling off the ubertricks.

Plus, its one of the prettier wii games. The graphics and effects are really well done.

Sad to see that this game didn't get the sales and recognition it deserves.
