Stadia to close its game studios

How much do you think Jade Raymond's severance package was?

Sucks that the team lost their jobs.

She gets to go work with Patrice again and take credit for whatever he's creating now.

It's still only their own studio, not the platform. But the platform shouldn't be far behind.
It's signalling that the platform holder has a lack of interest, devs won't bother porting games to Stadia now. Dead man walking.

Anyone could have seen this coming. It's confounding to me that so many developers were duped into believing it. Same as OnLive, same as Ouya. Why is it some people can't forecast where these things go?

I guess Jade Raymond kills another studio

Left Ubisoft to join Motive and lead Visceral Games (Star Wars 'Rag Tag' ). VG closed in 2017
Then joined Google to lead their games division and Stadia

Those didn't go so well.

Stadia bought Typhoon software in 2019 (Journey to the Savage Planet) so I hope they get saved somehow.

Remember Phil said google was their competitor. Once the Amazon one fails as well, Phil can declare Xbox the winner after
Knocking out google as Amazon.
But was the other Phil who took them down. So I'm guessing this is a Sony move. Next they rehire him and put him under the new SCI leader: Ken Kutaragi! They rebuild Liverpool, re-buy Evo from the claws of EA, re-open London and Soho Studios and 8 Days is no longer cancelled!!!

So it seems Stadia is pivoting towards "blanket" service - similar to XCloud actually where third party use the streaming for their own platforms like "EA Streaming" or "Ubisoft Streaming" etc.

Considering that Google has quite a nice coverage they might succeed there.

It amazes me Phil Harrison keeps getting hired. He was part of Sony during the PS3, Microsoft during the Xbox One and now Stadia.

Google as product is a failure.

Keep Google as search of website that is only they can do better.

Possible but i doubt it. This has happened so many times with tech, where after a struggling launch, the owner shows a clear lack of belief in its own product, and the writing is always on the wall for that product, no matter what PR they talk about changing this, adopting that in the future etc.
Plus it stops third parties from also having confidence in Google and Stadia itself.
This is the beginning of the end.

Probably a matter of time until they sunset the platform itself. Without an in house developer to really let the tech shine, it'll be a dumping ground for ports. If you can afford the type of internet connection you need for stadia to be a reliable alternative, you can afford and Xbox or PlayStation.

I think if they had put together the studios before release and had a couple of really good exclusives ready for release they may have had a chance(probably not, lol),but releasing with no big exclusives and none coming any time soon was kind of ridiculous. Not sure what they were thinking with that strategy tbh.I'm not sure how the service has any kind of future without good exclusive content.

I'm not counting Stadia out yet. They are unique in streaming so far as there's nowhere else you can stream Cyberpunk or AC Valhalla or Hitman 3 or Immortals.

No the thing is that they are shutting down their internal gaming division but not the platform itself. Platform itself is nice though but I am not sure that Vulkan API is a requirement to use it or not, because Amazon just went with Windows and that's it.

Google what are you doing!? YouTube won't print money forever and we all know your Cloud isn't the best in the market.

That's the way to go. Few are going to buy hardware to stream games. An app in devices they already have could have more reach, though still has the barrier of having to buy a controller for people who aren't already gamers or hassle with syncing and controller back and forth between whatever console and whatever streaming device if they only have one pad.

In an case, a main appeal of streaming content is being able to access it on gadgets people already have. If there's a future in streaming gaming it will be on apps built into TVs and in all mobile devices. Otherwise for the core gamer market, PCs and consoles with options to buy games (physical or digitally), pays or services like Gamepass to download and play games ano streaming services on those platforms already reach that market. Only question is if there's a big enough market of people out there who'd pay for a streaming gaming service who aren't currently willing to buy consoles or a gaming PC, and who aren't satisfied by mobile games. I'm skeptical there's much market there.
You don't need hardware for stadia. All you need is a broswer (or app) and an internet connection.

what a sorry, pathetic, limp-dicked attempt at their first console. One of the biggest tech companies in the world couldn't get anything right with this thing. Can't wait for the detailed post-mortems

They are probably gonna buy some studios now guys and gals; we aren't rid of this yet.. almost no way Google gives up w/ Amazon and Microsoft still bulllish.

Amazon is essentially doing the same thing; while launching LUNA they kinda are giving up on internal game dev.

Why would they buy more studios if they are giving up on internal game dev?

Well are they actually shutting down Typhoon Studios?

I guess maybe I read into this wrong; I read it as shutting down the studio they formed internally. Typhoon of course reports up to SG&E but is still separate.

But you make a good point; maybe they are getting out of that business in general and just doing exclusivity contracts.

Either way people thinking this means Stadia will die soon aren't paying attention to the market IMO.

edit: I see some articles reporting this includes their "Montreal Studio", so I guess people are assuming Typhoon is shut down.

Oh shit, I forgot about this. Journey to the Savage Planet was really awesome, it'd be such a shame for such a talented newish studio to go down with this ship

Typical half-assed investment by Google with everyone scratching their heads as to why it's not working. Games were Stadia's biggest issue. Exclusive games a huge one. It takes time and hundreds of millions of dollars to make great exclusive games.

Google has ADHD as a company. The tech is excellent.

Well unfortunately (IMO), this likely means some big paid exclusive deals.

Which would be fine if the content wasn't locked behind streaming. Maybe Google will allow PC releases at least.
