Stadia to close its game studios

They tried their hardest to shake what they had, but nobody was buying.

Wonder how this effects Typhoon Studios. Hope they get spun free and able to make another game like A Journey to the Savage Planet.

She was the producer on some of the biggest surprises UbiSoft ever released including Assassins Creed 2 and Watch Dogs.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet she has more to give.

She should go back onto the Watch Dogs team because Legion wasn't very good.

Assassins Creed definitely progressed well beyond 1 and 2 with the Origins reboot and probably saved the franchise. It's vastly more Breath of the Wild than AC1 now.

I actually tried the Stadia trial this month, and thought it was pretty good. Surprised there is this much disdain. If you have a good internet connection but no next gen system or gaming PC, its a good way to play games.

The thing that bums me out is that you have devs (like Jade) who make great games but leave for another studio/venture, and start a new game. Going on 6 years since her last game and now we have to wait at least another 3 to see something. Meanwhile so many devs burn out or retire while we're waiting for another masterpiece (I thoroughly enjoyed watch dogs much more than 2). For those who love sunset overdrive, Drew Murray's last game in 2014, announced he's leaving the initiative after 2 years. This means fans of his, for the most part, don't get anything new, great and grand from him in 7 years and, if, he is not quitting games, need to wait at least another 3. Might just be me but it's easier to wait for games like GTA6 (easier to continue to wait rather than waiting, again, if that makes sense).

I think there's some misconception about people like Jade. They aren't devs, only producers, who are more like project managers and have very little say in game design process. You don't have to knowledgeable about video games to be a producer. And as the failure of Stadia has shown, these people know jack shit about video games, or how internet works in general.

I know this isn't the shutting down of Stadia, but it does mean that Stadia is not going to have any exclusives. Without exclusives how are they going to compete with Xcloud, PSNow, or even Amazon Luna?

Feels like a lot of Google's other half hearted ventures that they eventually give up on. I give Stadia another 18 months tops

This is simply the press release before THAT press release. They don't want to come straight out and say the service is dead while they're trying to part out any valuable IP. No, they'll make it seem like everything is chugging along just fine until they parted it out and have their wind down plan in place. They won't make it even a year.

If Xbox gets the tech people from Stadia (it's not like it was a really shit system it just had no games or any draw to it) then xCloud will be even better than it already is.

This is what will happen to all streaming services that only focus on games. Not enough of a target audience. Majority of gamers will always choose hardware whether PC or console.

Game streaming will only really fly among the casuals when it's included in a service targeted for the casuals.

Maybe I'm a casual? Honestly, the ability to almost instantly load up a new game without having to worry about downloading and installing or managing drive space is fantastic and I think something any gamer would appreciate. Gaming with Stadia is just so seamless and easy. It's a fantastic platform and I would probably be all on board it if I didn't already spend a bunch of money on a gaming Pc last year (and if there wasn't a question about its long term viability).

Well what to expect, they went with the exact same terrible business model as all the previous streaming services that failed hard, so their fate can't be any different, it's only a matter of time. MS if the first and so far the only one who actually charges for using the service, not per game basis.

So what does it means ? they will go pokemon on existing ones or it will join most of their others services ?
i really don't known which one to choose.

Google be like "I started building a house but had to stop after putting the first brick, it was too difficult".

Game streaming will appeals to casuals I agree. But it has to be packaged in a way that will appeal to them. A streaming service of pure games, IMO, will find limited target audience. It will be a hard sell among the gamer crowd who would rather buy hardware, and too expensive for the casual crowd who only really play console-type games occasionally.

I was thinking of something similar to this.

This was another Google project after the diversity comity takeover and they all failed. Teams created not on merit, but for representation not only have to create a successful product for a market a huge part of the team is not even interested in in the first place.

Google was successful when they created stuff they themselves wanted to have. What was their last successful product after android? Now they can only buy smaller companies and leech off their creative energy until it is assimilated by the Google hive mind. Everybody with half of a brain knew that Stadia would fail. Only those morons in media thought it would prevail.

The sad part is, that the Nvidia system had to suffer because Google strongarmed developers to drop them.

Google gave me a Stadia Pro account for free, and free games.. and for some reason I still can't be bothered to use it. Anyway, that's my anecdote of how bad this whole thing is..

That's Google for you. Access to near unlimited funds, scalable technology, and the best talent in the world willing to work with them, but they refuse to cultivate anything that isn't an instant success. What a shitty way to manage a technology company really. It must drive many young and hungry engineers nuts.
It's the "agile" corporate culture my friend. Staff really took that shit on board. Fail fast or something like that.

Jade Raymond needs a gif of Woody Harrelson wiping his tears with cash. She's gonna get a severance package for sure.

Well said. Such a weird frustrating company. I wouldn't be surprised to see the whole Stadia service get shut down within the year.

Is Shannon Studstill going to come back to Sony Santa Monica?

Well, Yumi Yang is head of SMS now, so if Shannon Studstill were to return (and I think she was there a long time so I'm sure they'd be happy to have her back) they'd either need to create a new position for her or she'd be lower down the ladder than she was before which she may not be happy about. Either way, I'm sure folk like her & Jade Raymond will not struggle to find work elsewhere.

What was Jade Raymond's output at Stadia?

In fact, when was the last time she had any release since she left the Assassin's Creed team?

I think she was heading up Ubisoft Toronto when they led development on Splinter Cell Blacklist. She also might have been at EA Motion when they shipped the campaign for Battlefront.

Whenever I've seen Stadia adverts/promotions, they always show it streaming on a smartphone, never on a smart TV which is where the majority play their games. Personally I've never considered playing console class games on a 6 inch screen, I rarely used the remote play feature of my PS3/Vita since I found the experience being difficult to play, the scaling on the HUD text being one example.

I think had they released some sort of server box that the user could plug into their router and have it stream to their devices, kind of like their own personal Stadia console so that they are not as reliant on Stadia servers, people would be more interested in it. I know a lot of people were put off by the latency issues and the prospect of Google shutting down the servers themselves and therefore loosing access to the game they brought. Also as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, a gamepass like subscription service would have fared better here.

At least the controller looks nice though, anyone know if it works with Steam or Windows itself? Is it easy to set up?

Good - it was worst most consumer hostile bussiness model in gaming. The only acceptable one should be geforce now where you are renting hardware to play your own library remotely.
