Star Fox - Preview Thread

Overview Trailer

IGN

I walked out of my hour-and-a-half preview with Star Fox in disbelief at how excited I was to tell everyone about a remake of a game I've already played several times before. This new take on the classic Star Fox 64 is not just a simple fresh coat of paint like the 3DS version. Instead, it's shaping up to be a significantly expanded and surprisingly cinematic retelling of the Lylat Wars, thanks to an overhauled script that's brought to life by some of the strongest voice acting and cutscene direction I've ever seen in a Nintendo game.

But all in all, if Nintendo were set on remaking Star Fox 64, I'm not sure if they could've done a better job than what I've experienced so far. I still think a new game would've been my preference, but if I'm not excited for Star Fox (2026), I'm not Alex from Nintendo Life.

From what I've played of Star Fox, this feels like exactly what the series needs right now. I know a lot of people rolled their eyes and may have even felt a little let down when Nintendo revealed its next game was yet another take on Star Fox 64. I'm confident in saying that, old fan or new, you're going to love what Nintendo has done with the game this time around.

The very best part, though, is multiplayer. Playing with a handful of journalists in a room, I had a blast in dogfight-heavy battle modes. Two teams of four had to find tanks and bring them to their team gate to earn points, while also trying to stop the other team and shooting down as many ships as possible. The open-arena free flying was fun, just chaotic enough, and I liked it more than similar-feeling Mario Kart battle modes. (My Star Wars feelings had a lot to do with it.)

I've not had long with Star Fox, but I'm already excited to get my hands on the full game. The avatar mode had a lot of greyed out options with clues tied to the main campaign, so I'd have a reason to aim to complete the various challenges in the game to unlock more. Plus, with the battle mode adding to the game's longevity, this is a game I could see myself playing for a decent while. Fortunately, I don't have long to wait either – bring on June 25th!

The Star Fox squadron is rendered with high-definition detail in all-new cutscenes that bring a deeper narrative and more believable characterizations to the game. In between missions, players see new interactions between Fox and friends that reinforce the personalities of the crew. While playing the game during a recent hands-on event, I was struck by how effective these scenes were. The rivalry between Fox and the cocksure Falco Lombardi, for example, really shines in these narrative cutaways.
Adding more in just a bit.

Adding more as I find it. Pretty good praise!

Regardless of how good this is, if it's successful I hope they use it as a springboard card for an entirely new StarFox game that is in the same vein. They don't need to use it as a vehicle for experimental games. They don't need clever two screen mechanics. Just make pure highly replayable space opera shooter. One new adventure/mission a generation doesn't feel like too much to ask.

Great to hear all the good impressions. Game is pre-ordered and I'm excited to play it, despite having replayed the decomp 64 version (Starship) recently.

I'm a SNES Star Fox diehard. N64 was super meh to me when it was originally released. I will still pick up this new version though, hopefully its not another polished turd like MP4

If I am not mistaken is Starfox Assault the last "original" entry in the series?

Even that was gimmicky if I remember correctly. It had on foot missions that absolutely sucked, along with other vehicles that were slow and not fun to play.

The last "real" pure StarFox is literally StarFox 64 IMO.

Command is the last original story. It actually wrote the series into its end with very definitive endings. Despite not being very successful, I wonder if it was because of that games narrative that Nintendo decided to restart the story once again.

I'm pretty excited for this one, will be a good fun simple gameplay loop experience but with good replayability via difficulty settings and challenges.

I'm impressed they let them preview it on what looks like a Sony OLED (judging by the stand/feet and rear panel), it seems like they often have absolute shit displays at preview events based on photos I've seen before now.

They probably wanted to put the HDR capabilities on display.

Is based on the N64 game after all, so of course is a easy win for previews.

My still remaining complain are the unnecessary photorealism.

The Battle Mode has me salivating. I saw a character unlock screen that went far beyond 8 Star Fox and Star Wolf characters. I assume it was just for the online avatars but unlockables are unlockables, they give me hope for more. More stages, more playable ships, etc. Those who played it sound like they had a good time. If we get some DLC rolled out over time I will be happy as heck.

Star Fox was a really important franchise for Nintendo, hasn't been seen in many years. This is a game you can play in one playthrough, the N64 version is good anyway.

I am bummed it's Star Fox 64 again BUT I really like the added cut-scenes they're including between levels to flesh out the characters and story and the multiplayer looks like it has potential. If they made a good game here, I'll support it even though it isn't the game I wanted, because I care about this IP and want more StarFox.

It is really impressive how many N64 games still play well today. Until recently, I played Mario Kart 64 all the time with family. It is legitimately 90% as good as the most recent games

Having said that, it is quite the slap in the face to consumers to not evolve the gameplay loop in any meaningful way

Can you fly in first person cockpit view without having to use the new mouse gunner control though? or are you forced to use the new mouse gunner control while in cockpit view? anyone knows. Nintendo does not seem to mention this.

I have never played this. Is it that good?
One of the best games on the N64. Easy to play and beat but getting all the medals to unlock master mode and then doing it all again in master mode sure takes skill and time.

Big recommend based on my time with the original game, unless they fuck it up.

Fun fact, I imported a US N64 with a step down converter just for this game. Sold my pal UK N64 and never looked back. I got the edition with the rumble pack for my birthday and I played this game to absolute completion. Didnt take long from memory!

Simpler times!

Lylat Wars was already a fantastic game so a 1 to 1 copy was always going to have a high chance of being great, the question is, is this going to lay the ground work for more Starfox games Nintendo seems to have had an issue in continuing the franchise since the N64.

I'm all about game feel over anything and Star Fox feels amazing in the hands. The controls are relatively simple but the Arwing is super mobile, you can really move around in a satisfying way to rack up scores. Then when it comes to shooting at appropriate times to rack up high scores, it can be very addictive. The game is deceptively longer than people make I out to be as well. Trying to see every planet and getting their medals will take some time.

Beyond that the presentation for the original game was oddly cinematic for a Nintendo game, especially back then. Now they've upped the presentation values 40 fold and the story looks even more compelling than it was before. I can see clear character arcs already which weren't particularly preset before as well as straight up drama. For the most part, in the original, characters spoke 1 liners at each other, in this they are clearly talking to one another.

I know you are on this journey to enjoy Nintendo franchises and I think this one just might hit the right notes for you.
