Star Wars Battlefront II |BETA| Execute Pre-Order 66

I suck as star fighter controls. Any tips?

Tweak from the default mouse settings. I turned the base sensitivity way down and then the two other starfighter mouse options (I forget the names) are at 25% each.

And then just practice Starfighter assault endlessly and tweak settings until you find what feels good.

Switching to the TPS mode for the ground game has been such an insane improvement for me. I went from struggling to get a kill to being top 3 and getting 1-2 heroes per game consistently. So much fun. Maul is such a damn beast to use. Han Solo is ridiculous too, I cleared an entire hallway and got 5+ kills without even meaning to lmao

Oh, wow. I don't like this game at all.

I'm not much of a multiplayer guy, so I tried the Battlefront 1 beta a couple of years ago not expecting much; I had heard about the pretty graphics and thought "sure, let's take a look". First of all, the incredible graphics floored me. The maps were so fuckin good looking. But then I realized how much fun I was having actually playing. It was simplistic, no BS, and just plain fun. I ended up sinking 75 hours into that game and loving it.

I dove into the Battlefront 2 beta this evening. The first thing I noticed is that the graphics seem underwhelming? What happened? Washed out, terrible pop in, and the environments just don't seem very impressive. I also was disappointed to find that the game doesn't feel as good as I remembered the first game feeling. None of it is as inviting either. The gunplay felt just okay. I died quick. The environments didn't seem as interesting or as clear to navigate.

I'm out.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Very similar experience. I played and loved the first one and this one feels off in a way that's difficult to pinpoint for me. Movement and gunplay feel odd compared to the first. Oh and what the hell happened visually? This feels like a step down. Weirdly enough though, starfighter assault looks mindblowingly good so hopefully they'll tune up the ground game to look spectacular too. Playing on PS4 Pro btw.

I will say that I've been testing out the specialist class tonight and have been enjoying that more. So there's that. I don't think im "out" yet. It's still a fun game. I just miss the more arcadey gunplay of the first.

Yup, there are a few things that are very off about the game. Like it just feels weird.

As it stands, I'm in for the single player campaign and Starfighter Assault at this point. Hope the devs listen to the feedback.

I've put around 7 hours into the Beta playing all the game modes, and the game feels like an improvement over the first.

I've put in over 100 hours into the original Battlefront, but I only started playing a year later with all the DLC, and so the content issue many people had at launch didn't affect my opinion as much. I had a great time playing Battlefront, it was simple fun and I didn't take it too seriously. The game did have its issues such as hero selection, and Starfighter mode, but both have been improved in my opinion.

The gunplay has changed, or maybe it's just the guns but shooting over long distances requires more precision. Also it feels as the number of shots it takes to bring someone down has increased. In Battlefront even though there were such a large number of guns I didn't feel they differed too much from one another. While I did enjoy the simplicity of Battlefront, I do appreciate making the guns a little more difficult to handle, hopefully increasing the variety of different feeling guns. I like the class system and how each class has it's own unique ability, even though infiltrator on the specialist class is overpowered at the moment. A powerful mid-ranged weapon and knowing where enemies on the map are is very powerful. I do still prefer this system over Battlefronts heavy use of jetpacks and bubbles. Overall while it loses some of the simplicity of the original I'm looking forward to seeing what other tools are in the box.

The way heroes are selected is greatly improved. Rather just getting lucky to pick up a hero token, you need to earn your ability to be a hero through points. I haven't had any trouble unlocking a hero and I do like how they even included other hero characters like the jet trooper and wookie. They are less expensive than the main heroes but still feel powerful enough in their own ways. The jet troopers accuracy and movement feel great to use. The main heroes themselves are fun to use although go down much easier compared to the previous game so while you can still play more aggressively as a hero you need to pick your battles more carefully before you go charging in a room.

Theed is an interesting map as the main path down the center of the map is a death trap and it makes most of the intense fighting happen on the side lines. There is room to flank and stops it from just being a corridor shooter. Although it can be if you don't use the less used paths for an advantage. Takodana is fun to play, its a smaller map than Theed but so is the player count. Battles are just as intense and enemies tend to come from more directions compared to Theed.

The Starfighter mode has also improved. In the original you only had to lock on and fire in enough shots before the lock on disengaged and you could score a kill. It was very simple and incredibly easy once you got the hang of it. This time around there is no lock on and all shooting must be done manually, this makes it more skill based and more engaging. There is more nuance to flying and I had a fun time playing what I did of this mode.

A huge step back is the loot crate system, it's probably the worst thing to come out from this generation of gaming. I understand a business exists to make money, but these practices seem scummy. You CAN unlock these items by playing but they intentionally make it time consuming and unfairly give players an advantage over other players. Imagine if a basketball player could run faster than the other players because he donated more money to the NBA before the season started. They force you to specialize in one class, because they don't make it easy to unlock the best abilities and if you don't have them your character will be at a disadvantage. Why use my assault character when I don't have the right cards and my specialist has the better abilities. Gone are the days of unlocking abilities and weapons on a linear level up based system. Now its all about getting lucky. Even dirtier is those willing to spend money have a better chance of unlocking higher tier skills, giving them a competitive advantage. For example one of the highest skill cards gives players a 28% reduction in their cooldowns. If you just started playing you're already at a disadvantage compared to someone who has the higher tier cards. That means I can spam my infiltrator ability more often and get kills more often.
I don't mind microtransactions in a multiplayer game as long as they are cosmetic and have no impact on gameplay. The way Overwatch does it is best, and while I don't like the idea of loot crates, keep it just to cosmetics and if people want to pay let them.

Overall the game is an improvement over the first in many ways. I had a fun time playing the Beta. The biggest issue I have with the game is the loot crate system and how it directly affects gameplay.

Noticed something off as well with the sound design. Anyone played Han yet? His DL44 was immaculate in the first game, now it has this strange actual gun like 'pop' sound added to it.

Why DICE? They received nothing but praise for the first game's sound design and now they somewhat butcher it, for what?

I am slightly let down that the blaster effects got more, how do you describe it... bullet-y?

Somewhat detracts from the flashyness of combat.

Let your voice be heard, multiple people are spamming reddit (developers tend to show their faces there). I know I am, I need my T H I C C bolts.

Also going to pester them over that sound design.

Ok, I've got a weird one here..

Xbox One S

I was having trouble with the EULA part.. redownloaded the beta before I read about the hard reset.. did a hard reset and now I'm able to go past that screen...

.. only to get stuck on the next part. I can't press A to skip Finn talking about the game.. so after waiting I get dumped to the main menu ("Start Collecting, Take a Look, Get Yoda's, etc) where nothing works except the Guide button. I tried an XB1 controller as well, neither the XB1S or XB1 controller worked.

Frustrating as hell, as I've been wanting to play all year long. Chances are EA won't extend the beta so I feel ripped off paying for the game in advance.

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: Apparently lots of people are having the same problem with the only solution being the same as the yesterday -- hard reset. I wonder if it's related to the insider program?

Try rebooting your console. Spam the a button as it's firing up and keep pressing it until that point. Try disconnecting your controller by removing the batteries when you're stuck on that screen then put them back in. If all else fails a reset which loses all your personal data (saves will auto resync) but not games / apps.

It's just bugged, frustratingly. The beta is buggy in a lot of ways to be honest, in typical dice fashion it's obviously coming in pretty hot. All of the above have reported to fix it though, doesn't seem to be one consistent fix.

Getting tired of the "max number in play" for heroes/villains. I earned those battle points, I should be able to spawn as Darth Maul when I please.

I had this happen 4 matches in a row. It's infuriating. No, I don't wanna be another droid or a wookie. I just wanna be a cool guy. DICE pls.

i played Naboo and the game looks and ran so good. been playing at 1080p 70avg fps ultra settings with hbao mid and wow dont know what DICE are doing with that engine but dang it runs so good. and the space map like 120fps.

gameplay wise i really dont have complains cuz i didnt played too much. but i kind like you're forced to start with a squad but sometimes i want to jump fast where the action is. or give us the option to start with a teammate.

pd. no performance thread?

Up on Origin.

Go to Free Games -> Demos and Betas and its listed there.

22GB download on PC.

Edit: Make sure to click Add to Library to get the download going.

I'm watching the Quick Look. I forgot there's a story mode. I would've considered a purchase if DICE didn't insist on adding their backwards flight controls.

Thanks.

I love how they make it hard to find on purpose. It'll never be in the actual BF2 Menu anywhere. I knew that but I was STILL searching like an idiot.

So what is the first impression? If I didn't care for the first game, should I now or is it Battlefront 1 with more stuff in it? I don't care for single player story mode.

Edit: Reading through this thread gives the impression that people are not impressed... if it follows the same route as previous EA titles there will be a pretty good sale around December on Origin.

Man that was funny to watch, they had no idea about what the clone wars are, then they spent half the time talking about TIE Fighter.

Flushing was actually an integral mechanic in the Battlefront 2015 that they have completely dumbed down and complicated at the same time in this version......for reasons unknown.

I am so disappointed in this sequel.

I absolutely loved Battlefront, but this is so far from my expectations. The graphics are washed out and there is a 'grainy' feel to the whole IQ. The first game had great IQ and almost photorealistic scenery in parts. It really popped. This one looks like Quantum Break. The framerate is unstable and I swear I had some screen tearing last night. It's just so far from what I expected.

As cliché as this sounds, I actually did just cancel my pre-order on Amazon (I had the Elite Trooper Deluxe Edition £70 copy on pre-order) and will downgrade to the regular version if I feel that I do want to buy the game.

I will play some more tonight and over the weekend and see if it clicks, but ... meh.

Lol, just played a round on PC. The chromatic aberration looks horrendous. This is eye cancer inducing. If there isn't a way to disable it this was my first and last round. How can people play like that?!?

what platform are you playing on? I thought it looked fine on PS4 Pro.. but I am also old and my eyesight is not perfect..

About the framerate and tearing complaints... It’s a beta.

I'm sure they'll suck me back in again when the game is released but I am canceling my pre-order I had a few fun moments but I just can't see this coming together the way that I felt with the beta in Battlefront 1

So what do you think of the gameplay in this beta? All your complaints are about the graphics.

You really have to feel for DICE reading through this thread (and the equivalent one two years ago). Poster after poster that wants it to be one of: More like the originals, more like Battlefield, less like Battlefield, and now, more like Battlefield 2015. Not sure they can win honestly. They've now made two games that feel pretty unique, one very much towards the casual end and one that is significantly more complex and content packed... I liked Battlefront 1, and so far, I like Battlefront 2.

Spent a few hours with this last night finally. Not a fan of the first game due to feeling like there was not much depth.

First to face:
Thanks for washing my eyes with bleach, DICE. WTF at this post processing. Go subtle, fuckers. Less is more.

First to fingers:
Definitely doesn't feel as smooth as the first game in terms of being intuitive to 3rd or 1st person pew pews. Aiming feels a tad strange. Shooting looks, feels and sounds off. Where are the blaster bolts? This is Star Wars. What the hell?

Classes:
Classes are OK but I'm not seeing the synergy yet with any of them.

Upgrades:
Abysmal. Let's not do this in any game moving forward, thanks. Ice the mobile bullshit in a full priced game, please.

Map:
FML. Looks better than it plays.

Sound:
Pretty good here but the Star Wars sound seems a bit lost in a lot of the weapons. Music is good, needs more though.

Overall I'm let down again. It seems as if the same recurring theme is found in all of these high-profile AAA titles as of late. Lots of ideas that COULD be pulled off, but it seems as if they picked them out of a hat with no consideration for congruity, threw them in a pot to cook but never added broth or turned the burner on.

Goddamn.

It's such minor changes, what don't you like about the flushing in this beta?

If you stop shooting before the gun overheats: In 2015 it started heating down fairly quickly. In 2017 they've added that you need to press square (on PS4) like a normal reload in other games to make it heat down quickly.

If you keep shooting until the gun overheats: In 2017 the blue reload mini-game area is exactly the same as the reload mini-game in 2015. Now they've just added a smaller yellow area for a bigger risk/reward where you can get a small window of time with free shooting without overheating.

I'm stuck in the same spot. I'm not resetting my XBOX. Hopefully I'm allowed to play the retail game in November!

I loved the original in a bunch of ways, and for the most part I feel this is a fantastic sequel. However there are a few things which kinda hold it back:

Firstly I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the battle points system. I love being able to spend my points on what I want. But I think it needs some tweaking, at the moment I'm not a huge fan of how all the heroes end up appearing towards the end of the match, and I feel there needs to be a way to spread their use more consistently throughout the match.

Still not a fan of cross era stuff, whether it is music or heroes. I think it would be better if they limit your choice depending on the map. Presumably they will limit the number of heroes in play anyway, so I don't see this being a huge change. Also, it feels odd to have Rey's theme playing during a clone wars battle. Basically, they seem to have painstakingly recreated locations from the movies, including a bunch of elements from things like the Clone Wars, so it just feels like an odd decision.

Blaster bolts seem a bit small, and make it hard to at times to see who is shooting you. The first one was perfect, so they should just pump them up a bit. Also, I'm not a huge fan of some of the blaster reticules as they seem tiny, but it might just be me needing to get used to it. Overall it makes it feel a bit less arcadey than the original.

The filters and graphics seem really all over the place. They should really remove the film grain thing they have in at the moment. It just doesn't look that great.

It would be good to get a crouch toggle as well. Also, with the maps having a lot more barriers and fences etc, I kinda feel the game could do with a way to jump over obstacles. Maybe like a mini jet pack just to cross small things.

Star fighter assault was probably the biggest surprise for me. It feels a lot more visceral and responsive. I love that you are flying amongst ships and scenery as well.

Overall I feel good about the game though. I expect they will iron out some of the minor annoyances over time, and I'm quite excited to see the other maps. Considering we will also have:

Starkiller Base
Endor
Hoth
Kamino
Jakku
Yavin 4
Kashyyyk
Tatooine
Death Star II

Plus the straighter maps and any other small maps they might have, and then future DLC maps. The game feels pretty stacked.

Man, Super Mario Odyssey and this game were at the top of my Christmas wishlist, but these impressions aren't sounding too good : (
