STASIS - An isometric adventure game made by one man

About a demo. I know it's asking for too much, but I loved how the Cardboard Computer guys dealt with Kentucky Route Zero's demo. They released a small game that was its own thing that fleshed out some details on the backstory of the main game. Same mechanics, same universe, but not part of the main game. That would be cool. Sorry. hehehe

My goodness, this game looks fantastic! As far as isolated survival stories go, nothing hooks my interest more than a haunted, derelict, futuristic facility of some kind, and I'd say an abandoned mining ship stuck in orbit around Jupiter definitely fits the bill. I'm liking that comparison to Sanitarium as well; that game was unsettling as hell and I haven't played a game like it since. Consider me a backer come October 28th, Mr. Bischoff. :)

I've been waiting for 1.5 years since it made the rounds in the point and click threads. I love the gifs on the overview page.

isometric viewpoints always suck, except possibly if they're in stereoscopic 3D

HEATHEN! :)

My brother suggested the same thing, which is definitely something I would consider. There is a short prologue tutorial section that ends with a...well, you may have to wait a little..

Consider me a backer come October 28th, Mr. Bischoff. :)

Music to my ears! :D

Just got the e-mail and I can't freaking wait to show my support :)

This will be the first time I back a kickstarter project. Stasis just looks so damn good!

Yasae, thanks for such a comprehensive post!

I have been doing extensive testing in the last few months, and the game has changed quite a bit. Its small things...puzzles that didnt have clear objectives, a piece of dialoge that needed to be rewritten, an interaction that wasnt clear...but it makes the game play SO much better when you have some sort of external voice. That said, I think that as an artist you have to know when to say NO, and trust your instincts with something.
Its a fine line to tread!
Yeah. I've listened back to old production demos and thought, "Damn, that one person who didn't know anything about production was exactly right about X thing." There's simply no way to see everything.

I loved the first 2 Acts of TSW...it just fell a little flat at the end. But you are correct about the sound, and the design. It really is an amazing looking, and sounding film!
I like your take that the reason it has such a viseral feel to it is because of the face that its so close to the game.
I think the only other game to put me "in the world" as much FF did was The Longest Journey - your genre. It's not every day that you go through screen after screen after screen of one city in one region of a game world. The amount of content and detail required to build it all is immense. I like the Gears and Killzones of the world too, but those are sets and that takes quite a bit away from the believability of those titles.
Sound Design is somehting that I never thought I would get into, but (ive mentioned before) that it easily the thing I've enjoyed most about STASIS. Sound in games is (I believe) far better done that in Film.
Certain movies DO have masterful sound design. Aliens is one of the best examples of Sound Design I can think of, and of recent films I would probably put TRANSFORMERS right up there.

But games! Dead Space's sound is IMMACULATE. Bioshock 1, and Infinite have incredible soundscapes. The Assassins Creed series are also masterful in the way that they make you FEEL like you are walking on hard snow, cobbled roads, or sneaking across tiles.
Certainly. Grand Theft Auto IV and beyond are also good choices. I remember climbing a chain link fence and thinking, "They had to record all this. Damn."
I think that its a mind set, and perhaps looking at the money as debt isnt the worst thing to do. It keeps your eye on the prize, and your focus on 'paying it off'. I view the risk to the backer as "You have put your trust in me-I OWE it to you to deliver".

Probably so. I charge half up front so that definitely sets up some expectations with people.

The world building in Bioshock was absolutely top notch - but one of my favourite worlds to just explore is Dead Space. If you look around there, you find all these small stories that the creators put in.

The Dig, while it doesn't have those 'small stories', is one of the MOST atmospheric games ever made. It one of the frameworks that I'm building STASIS around (the atmosphere and the mood).

Fuck games are awesome.

I never played The Dig to be honest, but I've seen some vids. Atmosphere does seem great. A lot of people complain about the repetitive nature of the game however, which is a bummer.

I first played it when it first came out, so I was about 11.
It was a VERY challenging game for an 11 year old, with some puzzles that really took some 'imaginative' thinking...and this was in a day before I had access to online walkthroughs!

I replayed it when I was starting out on STASIS, because I really wanted to get a feel for the atmosphere that it created - and I have to say that the game still holds up today (apart from a dodgy cutscene or two).

If you have a weekend, pick it up and give it a go. The music alone is worth it! I was really holding thumbs for an HD Remake (ala Monkey Island, and the cancelled Day Of The Tentacle), and who know...it may happen one day?

I still play it every now and then...possibily my all time favorite LucasArts adventure.
It's one of the very few boxes I still have from my youth.

I'm too waiting for a remake...I would buy it a heartbeat.

EDIT: Forgot to say, besides the cool iso Bioshock Infinite screenshot, a mention of The Dig in your twitter long ago made me checking out Stasis :)

I don't think you can have stereoscopy with a true isometric view. It's an infinite zoom at infinite distance virtual camera looking at a single view. Unless that was meant to be a joke.

Wierd...no impressions on the Stasis alpha demo?

I unfortunately managed to see it only for 5 minutes (no PC at home and trying now to find a suitable computer at work) but what I saw blew me away.
Intro is gorgeous.

This is one of those games that I know is going to be amazing, so I'm happy to wait until it's done to experience the best version possible.

Woohoo, finally got around to the demo! I'll admit, I got stuck on how to get the leak started to get the elevator unlocked.

The logs give off the feeling that the world is very disturbing, a bit hopeless and lonely. Humans reduced to being called products. There is no moral quandaries for the human experimentation.

Maybe it's just me, but it being an isometric sci-fi adventure game reminds me of The Longest Journey. Something about the animations looks rotoscope.

The hand holodevice is great.

The fans are very noir.

This game is more gross to me than Dead Space and other horror games that overdo the environmental gore to the point of a joke that is perfectly parodied by Viscera Cleanup Detail.

The flinching dead body, eww ewwwww.

I said "holy shit" at the Holy Shit moment. Very effective demo, well done Chris Bischoff!

I get that people are comparing this to Ridley Scott because of the aesthetic and colour scheme, but the subject matter about human experimentation is pretty different.

A TRAILER SHOWING SOME OF THE NEW ENVIRONMENTS IN STASIS!

LINK TO THE KICKSTARTER UPDATE

I'm at the four month mark of full time development on Stasis!

The majority of the Alpha bug fixes and new systems have been done and dusted, and so I have been able to move onto entire new and exciting Stasis environments.

The medical suites are stark and white with a vastly different aesthetic, compared to the rusty, industrial grime you've seen so far. It's refreshing to work on a new experience point with an unfamiliar tile set. I've also now created the medical puzzle that was alluded to in the last update.

SCREENS FROM THE ABOVE CONCEPT ART - IN GAME

.......

"The skeletal remains lie clustered together around the room, as if they died in a stampede, or clutching each other. Somehow the bones hold no scraps of flesh."

We've received some new writing from Christopher Dare and it is excellent! I can already see how the extra depth of this writing will echo through the environments, and really draw a player in.

I'm now moving onto the Hydroponics Bay... wish me luck :)

AND SOME MORE ART!

I'm a big believer in developers creating new and exciting IP's. It was the 'forced' creation of an inspiring new IP that led to things like FALLOUT, StarCraft, and many other hugely influential creative worlds.

I don't want another Baldars Gate-I want another world!

Love when developers make new IP and your game looks amazing! Reminds me of old-school Shadowrun on the SNES. Can't wait to see your finished product!

Just played the alpha demo and just wanted to say that you got my money as soon as this is released, fantastic game, it's like Sanitarium + Alien.

Congrats!

Sorry - we were switching servers a few days ago!

Please let me know if you have any more issues.

A bit of fan art here for Bioshock that I did last night. :D

Your isometric fanart is incredible. Do you have all of them collected somewhere with different download sizes?

The website is a bit spotty (we hit the front page on Reddit and it...well..I think it broke the internet), but it will be up and running again ASAP!

Game looks amazing. Can't believe I haven't heard of it before. Will definitely keep watch on this one, very nice work so far. As another said, definitely like the slight Alien aesthetic.
