Anytime anyone mentions zidane now they think of the headbutt first, and his greatness on the pitch second. Can't deny his legacy was tainted, however much that may be, because of that moment.
The headbutt is thought of first, but that is a testament to his good character. Zidane, in the biggest match of them all, took a stand against racism. He is a legend for that alone.
Maybe, but it's the only reason I even remember him as a person with no interest in football.
I don't know if headbutting someone who talked bad about your sister a stand against racism.

oh my stars. football fans can spin anything. I suppose Cantona was taking a stand against racism too. similar circumstances.
Zidane got sent off and rightly so. Dive or no dive, he threw a head butt at another player off the ball that connected, and that's a straight red. He sullied his legacy. Yes, he's still remembered as a great player.
But he's always going to be remembered as the guy who lost his temper and got sent off in his final game playing for France too.
There's no clause in the sport that says 'you are allowed to head butt if the other player is racist'.
France team was easily dominating at this point of the match, italians were rotten, if one team deserved to score becore the end it was clearly France and Zidane's red reduced their chance. To their credit, italians did wonderfully well during the PK, great shootings, at this point they would have won even if Zidane was there.

Well he forfeited millions of dollars, fame and glory so he could punch an asshole who most probably called his sister a whore and made it a racial remark. Its stupid in hindsight, but shows that Zidane has honor.
His only regrets are probably not being more racist on the pitch.

Came expecting this, was not disappointed.
I remember Zidane being interviewed on TV several days after the fact. IIRC he wouldn't go into specifics as to what Materazzi said, but while he felt that the way he acted was indeed a bad example for the many kids who view him as a role model, he couldn't really apologize since he knew he'd do it all over again because he basically couldn't live with himself had he let that shit slide.
