Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple

As an individual with over $10,000 invested in Apple equipment, I have to say I'm kind of glad.

The direction that Apple had been taking lately worried me.

OS X Lion shows strong hints at Apple favoring iOS to OS X - iOS has to be the most boring mobile OS out there (I have an iPhone, while practical...boring).

And after the atrocity with FCP X, maybe this is for the better.

Then again, Cook can just push forward these strides and we're all doomed, anyway....

yeah if you think they're going to change...they're not

Just make the next MBP and iPhone 5 awesome and I'll be happy. I've been Apple free ever since I dumped my iPod Touch for my Droid X, but going to college next year I'll be getting both an iPhone and a MBP. As long as nothing drastic happens there, I'll be okay.

boring? how is that a criticism of an OS at all? it's supposed to be practical and whether it's boring or not is irrelevant.

I have to laugh at people who think they'll instantly do a 180 from the most successful course in the history of consumer electronics.

Boring is just one of the qualities. It has it's impracticalities, which I won't delve into as there are too many (most can be, and have been for me, amended by jailbreaking the phone).

Also, it's dated. The folders was a step in the right direction, but only a step.

Apple's gradually closing their ecosystem and although I was somewhat fine with it on the mobile front, they're beginning to use that as a model for their computing front (LION, FCP X).

I'm a creative - the last thing I want is to give up options and control over to what Apple allows me to have/use or doesn't.

Why, vanilla ice turned into V-Ice.

Yup. From now on, any change in products that people perceive as backpedaling is going to be met with, "Boooo, that's not what Steve Jobs would have done!" Tim Cook has gigantic f-ing shoes to fill, and I seriously doubt he's got the balls to derail the things Jobs put in place.

Still going to stick with Apples products for the time being. The whole "im cool because I use a newer os on a phone that is going to be replaced in under a month" thing has yet to hit me.

Replace "resigns" with "dies," and you have a more probable, but sadder outcome from all of this :(

I wish Jobs the best with his ongoing fight with cancer.

Steve stepping down is likely a way to save some stock drop in a couple months when he succumbs to whatever cancer it is he has.

Reminds me heavily of Jack Layton stepping down from NDP leadership in canada a couple months ago , he just died this week.

Apple, being a publicly traded company will do slightly better to get this change up done now , with jobs still alive then to do it after he dies and make it seem disorganized.

Dude, honestly, the "I'm cooler because I have an iPhone" is kind of becoming a worse malady.

I think some of us just remember the previous post-Jobs Apple all too well, and that wasn't an overnight change but more of a slow decent into rudderless misery.

Apple's obviously a very different company now with a highly capable team, better products, and boatloads of cash, but I think only time and Apple's continued success will overcome the feeling that Jobs means good Apple, and no Jobs means bad Apple.

To be fair, the way it went down last time is completely different from how it's happening now.

I meant the "Now we'll get BluRay and Flash" nonsense, but rereading what I wrote, it works for what your saying as well. Lol

Goddammit...

I didn't have time to surf the net all day due to stupid work, and then I'm out on a date with this really hot girl and she breaks this news to me out of nowhere and I'm all like OMG WHY DID I NOT KNOW THIS I ALWAYS KNOW THIS SHIT WHAT THE FUCK.

You know who will really laugh if the stock craters tomorrow? Apple. Because they can use that massive cash pile to buy back a shitload of stock if it does go low enough, then release it back into the market for massive profits when they release their next breakthrough quarterly report.

But before that, they need this man as their new CEO:

stealth bragging thread

Tim Cook is an IBM sleeper cell, now that he's finally in position it's just a matter of time before he's activated.

My main worry is that this causes further delay of the iPhone 5, as this is likely going to make a lot of changes with the internal structure. But either way, I hope that the fall Apple conference still features an appearance by Jobs, and we get a "oh, and one more thing" for old times sake.

Spoiler alert, I told her the news and asked her if Vita would propel us out of the handheld gaming ghetto

Yup. I'd be surprised if we didn't get Jobs to make one last appearance and saying goodbye to everybody (when it comes to Apple keynote appearances). Dunno, it seems like something he'd do.

Either way, I don't think this will imply any issues with the iPhone 5.

Yeah, a curtain call would be cool even if he wasn't looking his best or able to present for long. He'd get an endless standing ovation.

He's taping messages right now. One for every future Apple product announcement.

They could rotate in fresh shifts of people to applaud so it never ends.

I bet this resignation was actually timed around the release of iPhone 5.

Obviously his health is the reason for his resignation.. but I don't think he realized that just this instant. Rather, he probably knew he had to resign sometime this year, and so he timed his resignation to get it out of the way before the next big Apple avalanche.

The financials and press will look down for a moment, and then the iPhone 5 will perk everyone's enthusiasm back up. Now his resignation won't drag the success of that launch down.

I agree, and I think it indirectly shows an insane amount of faith in the IP5. Afterall, if reception to it was lukewarm following his departure, all kinds of FUD would run amok. But no, they chose to have him depart just before IP5. They must know they have a winner, I cant wait to see what they have now.

I'm stoked. I'm using a broken 3G and it's time to upgrade. I'd be fine with just "iPhone 4 Again", but I expect there will be much more to be excited about.

or maybe the ip5 is such a gagortion he doesn't want to be anywhere near it. bailout.gif

or maybe he is just in ill health. i know, crazy right

Well he has been ill since January and has really only been CEO in name since then. Its seems from what I am reading this was just making it official. The timing could very likely mean something.

It was nicely sandwiched between two major announcements: iCloud/Lion/iOS5 and iPhone 5. They're cushions designed to hide Job's resignation amongst too much good Apple news. I think this has definitely been planned all year. He didn't just wake up feeling extra sick this morning...

1.5 months before iPhone 5 release? It's too perfect.

If it's coming out next month the iPhone 5 is probably finished or very close to it. Not sure why anyone would think Jobs' departure would have any effect on it.
