One Sunday morning, January 6th, 2008 I was attending religious services when my cell phone vibrated. As discreetly as possible, I checked the phone and noticed that my phone said "Caller ID unknown". I choose to ignore.
After services, as I was walking to my car with my family, I checked my cell phone messages. The message left was from Steve Jobs. "Vic, can you call me at home? I have something urgent to discuss" it said.
Before I even reached my car, I called Steve Jobs back. I was responsible for all mobile applications at Google, and in that role, had regular dealings with Steve. It was one of the perks of the job.
"Hey Steve - this is Vic", I said. "I'm sorry I didn't answer your call earlier. I was in religious services, and the caller ID said unknown, so I didn't pick up".
Steve laughed. He said, "Vic, unless the Caller ID said 'GOD', you should never pick up during services".
I laughed nervously. After all, while it was customary for Steve to call during the week upset about something, it was unusual for him to call me on Sunday and ask me to call his home. I wondered what was so important?
"So Vic, we have an urgent issue, one that I need addressed right away. I've already assigned someone from my team to help you, and I hope you can fix this tomorrow" said Steve.
"I've been looking at the Google logo on the iPhone and I'm not happy with the icon. The second O in Google doesn't have the right yellow gradient. It's just wrong and I'm going to have Greg fix it tomorrow. Is that okay with you?"
Of course this was okay with me. A few minutes later on that Sunday I received an email from Steve with the subject "Icon Ambulance". The email directed me to work with Greg Christie to fix the icon.
Since I was 11 years old and fell in love with an Apple II, I have dozens of stories to tell about Apple products. They have been a part of my life for decades. Even when I worked for 15 years for Bill Gates at Microsoft, I had a huge admiration for Steve and what Apple had produced.
But in the end, when I think about leadership, passion and attention to detail, I think back to the call I received from Steve Jobs on a Sunday morning in January. It was a lesson I'll never forget. CEOs should care about details. Even shades of yellow. On a Sunday.
To one of the greatest leaders I've ever met, my prayers and hopes are with you Steve.

This is really sad news though, feel for Steve Jobs. I do hope this new guy can make the company somewhat more likeable though, but sadly that probably won't happen.

V_Arnold said:Greed does, btw, as that was why they invested in the first place, but anyway, it is not just about greed, but it is about dumbness also. Steve Jobs is the face of apple, but all the hardworking talented people behind him are still there and they continue to be there.
This civilization is setting up its own downfall when they just WANT to react badly to situations like that. Just think about this for a minute. You invested in Apple because of its CEO who is KNOWN to have had serious fights regarding his health and will most likely not become healthier forever. So really people were basing on their investments on ONE person's well being? That is just plain DUMBNESS, and there is no two ways around it.
Mael said:You can't have it both way either, Apple spent an ungodly amount of time to push SJ as the face of the company, that means for good or ill he's the face of the freaking company.
If he turns ugly then the company's face turns ugly.
That's how it is, next time don't push some guy with a crippling disease as the face of your company.
Depends if they're here for the long run or not, most of the time investors don't have time to know the company THAT well either, so they see something not going well and they react.V_Arnold said:..or before actually investing, one can consider the "worst case scenarios" regarding the company they are gonna be investing in. Like a product failing to get enough sales or losing its current marketshare to a new competitor. I think both of these SHOULD rank higher in "risks" in the eye of an intelligent person than anything happening to a CEO*
*note: if product lines start failing majorly, it is not only that but it would have most likely taken a CEO or two aswell. But if it is just that...why panic? Yeah.

LOL. They don't market it as such at all. What commercials are you watching?Mael said:Depends if they're here for the long run or not, most of the time investors don't have time to know the company THAT well either, so they see something not going well and they react.
Oh and Nintendo's stock reach the lowest since 2003 because management try to run the company into the ground.
If the next iPhone fails in the market we'll see if the stock plunge deeper than now.
And they had it coming anyway since they marketed their company as SJ's playground, meaning that without SJ we'd have had no ipod, no ipad, no new macs.
So they see that if he steps down, Apple will no longer be so attractive.
They had it coming really.

There won't be iPhone 5 earnings announced until Q4 2011. If the iPhone 4 can hit over 20 million 15 months in (last quarter), I think the iPhone 5 can do pretty well by adding Sprint and China Mobile and China Telecom. Especially since there are rumors that a prepaid model will be introduced. I also think the iPad will have a strong holiday quarter. Strong earnings cure investor worries.Eggo said:What do you think the short term reaction will be for the stock price? Down 10%? I think people are still reeling from the news. Take a look at stock performance after earnings calls. And then compare it to stock performance after Apple keynotes. The stock jumped about 40 points after the last earnings report, for instance. To say that investors don't pay attention to earnings is the silliest statement I've ever heard.Mael said:Which means jackshit against more than 10 years of having SJ presenting the next line of products every year and the ecosystem with it?
