2.5x? Um....please insert Avatar DVD and then play the Blu-Ray and try and tell me the difference isn't tenfold.

If you take into account the first section of that statement (DVD's 100x's better than VHS), then I would agree with his ratio. There is really no comparison between the jump from VHS to DVD and DVD to BR. (and I really like BR).

Personally, my fav Apple innovation was the wheel.

On the iPod that is. I'm assuming they have that shit patented as I don't see it on any other mp3 player and it's pure genius for easy browsing of a large library of songs/files.

I agree with you, clicking wheel was one of the best Apple UI innovation.

Initially I thought touch interface could match the wheel. But its not nearly as fast or as enjoyable to get things done. "Back" is so cumbersome.

Also expendable folder in finder, that shit is so useful! why hasn't MS ripped it off yet?!?

If you watch Pirates of Silicon valley fictional Steve Jobs gets on Woz's case for being a fatass and eating burgers and shit, while fictional Steve eats ultra healthy. Sort of ironic in a fictional tnt movie way.

It's a shame they took that off the Nano. It was ideal for that form factor.

I don't know what you are getting at. Steve has been very very particular about his caloric intake for many years.

Icon Ambulance

One Sunday morning, January 6th, 2008 I was attending religious services when my cell phone vibrated. As discreetly as possible, I checked the phone and noticed that my phone said "Caller ID unknown". I choose to ignore.

After services, as I was walking to my car with my family, I checked my cell phone messages. The message left was from Steve Jobs. "Vic, can you call me at home? I have something urgent to discuss" it said.

Before I even reached my car, I called Steve Jobs back. I was responsible for all mobile applications at Google, and in that role, had regular dealings with Steve. It was one of the perks of the job.

"Hey Steve - this is Vic", I said. "I'm sorry I didn't answer your call earlier. I was in religious services, and the caller ID said unknown, so I didn't pick up".

Steve laughed. He said, "Vic, unless the Caller ID said 'GOD', you should never pick up during services".

I laughed nervously. After all, while it was customary for Steve to call during the week upset about something, it was unusual for him to call me on Sunday and ask me to call his home. I wondered what was so important?

"So Vic, we have an urgent issue, one that I need addressed right away. I've already assigned someone from my team to help you, and I hope you can fix this tomorrow" said Steve.

"I've been looking at the Google logo on the iPhone and I'm not happy with the icon. The second O in Google doesn't have the right yellow gradient. It's just wrong and I'm going to have Greg fix it tomorrow. Is that okay with you?"

Of course this was okay with me. A few minutes later on that Sunday I received an email from Steve with the subject "Icon Ambulance". The email directed me to work with Greg Christie to fix the icon.

Since I was 11 years old and fell in love with an Apple II, I have dozens of stories to tell about Apple products. They have been a part of my life for decades. Even when I worked for 15 years for Bill Gates at Microsoft, I had a huge admiration for Steve and what Apple had produced.

But in the end, when I think about leadership, passion and attention to detail, I think back to the call I received from Steve Jobs on a Sunday morning in January. It was a lesson I'll never forget. CEOs should care about details. Even shades of yellow. On a Sunday.

To one of the greatest leaders I've ever met, my prayers and hopes are with you Steve.

SAN FRANCISCO—Following the resignation of Apple founder Steve Jobs, incoming CEO Tim Cook called a meeting of shareholders and members of the press Thursday morning to announce that he envisioned printers as the company’s future. “Laser, ink-jet, double-sided, color, black-and-white—the future of technology is in printers. I am absolutely convinced of that,” Cook explained to a packed auditorium as a montage of printers and people using printers played on a screen behind him. “What is the one thing people will always need? It’s obvious: printers. Printers with fax machines attached, printers that collate and staple, perhaps a printer that makes photocopies. Anything’s possible. It’s called innovation.” Cook concluded his remarks by assuring investors the release of upcoming Apple products such as the iPhone 5 would be postponed for at least four years so the company could throw all its time and resources into the creation of high-quality printers for the home and office.
God damn it.

LOL, Cook.

It's been a fun ride.

edit: oh shit I'm glad I clicked the link. *wipes sweat from brow*

if you even thought for a moment that was legit, you need to step away from the internet :)

Hey, why couldn't it be real? Isn't this HP's strategy they announced the other day? Get out of PCs, tablets, and phones, make printers?

My heart literally skipped a beat when I read this and got a big lump in my throat. For those of you hoping 'it's not his health'.. what the hell do you people think? What other possible other reason could he have? The guy lives and breathes his company, and he would stay CEO until the last possible second until he couldn't. He's not leaving cause he's bored, unfit, want to retire or take a vacation. Reason and logic would dictate he's in bad shape and that his survival prognosis for the future is dim. No way in hell he would officially leave the helm if this was not the case. He's NOT well, clearly.

This is fucking massive. This guy's vision literally upended several industries with his philosophy and his vision. He is most of the reason that Apple excites me, just imagining him at the helm. Can't believe we've seen the last of his keynotes.. none else at Apple comes even CLOSE to his presentation style, and the awe, suspense, and excitement his keynotes generates. I'll probably skip them all from now on. Poor guy..this shit always happens to people with the most to contribute. His legacy won't be touched by anyone for a long time to come.

Don't fret, we still have those ePrinters to look forward to! In pink, blue, green. Cook will live up to the legacy.

Heeh heeeeh...

Anyone else imagine Steve Jobs at the wheel of some massive ship with long hair blowing in the wind? Just me? Kay.

:lol

I remember why I stopped reading Engadget, most all of the posters have not sort of knowledge of anything that happened before 1995. And the version they tell after that point is seriously twisted. Ugh.

So question to the detractors. Now that Steve is gone, and he no longer can herd his iSheep using his Reality Distortion Field(tm), if Apple is still popular in a year, 2, 3, will you finally admit Apple makes good products, and that we like the products and are simply not just being manipulated? (You still don't have to like the products)

It could be onehundredfold and I'm still not interesting in rebuilding my library all over again.

Plus DVDs are cheaper. I'll stick with DVDs until Digital Distribution is the norm and then just move over to that.

Now what I am wondering the most is if Steve was behind the lack of Blu Ray support. If that takes a turn for the positive after this whole ordeal, I will be very happy.

Considering that Apple is planning on phasing out the optical drive on their future Macs, I highly doubt Blu-ray is gonna make a comeback now that Jobs is out.

He got a cool photo and a story to tell. Not bad. Also it's just hair, the kid probably grew it back in no time.

He dressed up as a mac for halloween and had a corporations logo shaved into his head. It's really, really sad.

People dress up as all kinds of crazy things for Halloween so I don't see how that is sad. It's not like he got a tattoo.

Jesus, let the kids do what they like and enjoy. Who killed your childhood?

Plus, isn't the Mac logo shaved in back of head a reference to that really iconic book cover, rather than just a tubular haircut?

It's sad that you care.

The kid looks very cool.

Jesus, how much piss was on your cornflakes this morning?

I apologize for thinking its sad to like a corporation so much that you would do that. Clearly the wrong thread to voice such an opinion.

the kid is young enough that he probably doesn’t get (or care) that apple is a huge corporation.

they just make shit he loves. sure, he’s probably a bit more (or a lot more) obsessed than most kids but, frankly, it’s the same kind of devotion you see for, say, sports teams or video game mascots.

I’d be more concerned if he was in his late teens and still doing the same shit.
