Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple

I wonder, long after we're all gone, maybe three or four generations down the road, if Gates and Jobs are viewed almost at the same level as Einstein, Tesla, Franklin, etc.?

I would have to think so.

Edit: Obligatory fuck you to that pic, and the sick bastard who took it and sold it. I really hope some members of the paparazzi have a special place in hell reserved for them.

Apple just awarded Tim Cook 1M shares of stock as CEO bonus ($383M)
In connection with Mr. Cook's appointment as Chief Executive Officer, the Board awarded Mr. Cook 1,000,000 restricted stock units. Fifty percent of the restricted stock units are scheduled to vest on each of August 24, 2016 and August 24, 2021, subject to Mr. Cook's continued employment with Apple through each such date.

I think I got a key chain on my first day.

Personally I wish people just wouldn't post paparazzi photos, especially of people dealing with serious illness. It takes a special breed of scumbag to violate someone's privacy at a time like that by taking their picture, and I don't want to reward them with my eyeballs.

Take it easy.

383 million is disgusting.
well the gave him shares, not cash. and he's the pilot of a billion dollar ship that has to continue to make money. if he's good at his job and everyone makes money, I don't see any problem.

Seems very similar to the situation Jack Layton was facing. He got incredibly skinny, and stepped away from his duty as the leader of NDP. A few weeks later he passed away.

Did nobody read that he can't vest half the shares for 5 years, and the remaining half for a further 5 years? It's not like they just handed him a cheque for $383 million!

“People don’t read anymore” - Steve Jobs

TMZ (or whatever) have pissed me off posting that picture. A lack of respect or what?

It was a douchebag thing to do on their part. But so are 90 percent of the pictures they post. Including the Patrick Swayze one, which nobody on GAF seemed mad about.

I have read that but it is still disgusting to me. They basically told Tim we give you a 400 million bonus if you don't fail us in the next 10 years. And he makes tens of millions per year anyway. But i guess that is just the way Apple works. They even gave him 59 million bonus for his performance as CEO in 2009 when he filled in for Steve for a couple of months.

um, that’s the way all businesses work. Executives get major stock options and bonuses for running the company

Hell, if anything, Apple is one of the few companies profitable enough to justify it. It’s a hell of a lot better than hearing about some executives who get bonuses after their companies or banks nearly failed.

Goddammit. :(

Hope it's mostly a consequence of treatment.
Same.

Fuck... that picture... I watched my father wither away to cancer and seeing that picture brought back a whole slew of emotions.
I lost my grandfather to cancer and saw him go like that too, but I can't even begin to imagine it being my father. My condolences.

Just because that is the way all businesses work doesn't make it more right ;)

but I don’t even think it’s wrong, either. For any company, as long as they’re profitable and the people on top are responsible.

Apple is hugely successful. Tim Cook is a big reason for that and there’s a lot of responsibility and risk that now lies with him and his decisions.

that’s why these people get paid the big bucks.

what would be frustrating is if Cook were to run Apple into the ground and then somehow run away with millions of dollars of bonus money while doing a shit job.

Regarding the picture, why does he have hair? Is he not going through chemo?

there’s been no reports of him going through chemo.

the issue with his recent weight loss has been some hormonal imbalance where his body has problems with protein and he can’t gain weight.

That's a lot of money, but it would still be a hard decision to make. Your away from your family most of the time, you're not getting any younger, and the pressure is immense.

this pic makes me sad

Nah, that's nonsense in my opinion. But whatever.

What's nonsense is how much sports players make. Some of them will make more money than the CEO of Apple in that time span, and they play a freaking SPORT.

The same can be said of nearly every other job, except in those you can work for a lifetime and expect to make a tiny fraction of that amount.

This always rings false to me. XXXXXX amount of money comes in. Who should be getting this money then?

Not eating meat probably doesn't help. Not saying you can't get enough without, but it's not a secret that meat is protein.

I will never in my working life face the kind of pressure Tim Cook will face as CEO of Apple. Not even close. And I've had some stressful jobs.

Maybe the argument is not who gets the money, but if an excess amount of money is coming, why not lower the costs for entry for the people? That is, alter xxxxxx. Obviously, as a consumer, one would say that.

I'm not personally against people making whatever money. Some people make money in a week than I will ever see in a lifetime, without even lifting a finger. That's life. Some people are also dying of starvation, so who am I to complain?

That's totally fair but unfortunately the market supports the ridiculous prices for sports tix.

Yup, and that right there sums up economics, really. Companies will charge whatever the market will bear.

Yep, was the same for me. My dad looked as frail as this just before he died.

My dad's hair grew back very quickly after treatment, so he could have had chemo at some point. Then again he could be having radiotherapy instead.

yup. I can imagine doctors just throwing a basket of falafels in front of him and telling him to get to work.

Come on, they're a business. Its not about respect, they don't owe Jobs anything. Yeah, it sucks he looks really sick. But I'm not sure why that earns him some special paparazzi immunity.

Celebrity industry sucks, I'm with ya' but I am genuinely confused by the outrage in some of the posts I've read here. Cancer happens. Everyone will watch someone they love go through it at some point. Don't take it so personally when some random celebrity gets it.

EDIT: I just realized I specifically said "cancer" when I'm not really certain thats what it actually is. Whatever. Point remains. Back to dirtstache steve photos.

Well, I understand it's not that simple, but it would be another complication. Also, that said, people who are really sick can have little to no appetite regardless. My uncle with liver cancer was like this.

I'd just like people to stop posting it in here so I don't have to see it over and over.
