Stick drifting on Switch Lite confirmed

This nintendo stick drifting is caused by wear.
We can't tell this is an issue yet cause the fucking console just launched.
Nintendo changed the housing a while ago.
So wear should not introduce stickdrift.
For fuck sake people.

This is NOT the same thing.

It almost feels like a software issue. I never had any issues with them until they were updated a while back. Then it started drifting like crazy. I would imagine the switch lite is also running the same configuration we are all on now. Wouldn't imagine they would have been worn down that quick to develop the drift.

This was my biggest fear regarding the lite. In the regular switch you just get a new joycons or get it repaired, use another one while you have one drifting. But with the lite, you are pretty much fucked.

No, I mean it doesn't look like the same thing that causes the drift thing (Scratched contacts). It looks like a full-on faulty item that's literally broken.

Could be, could be. We should wait and see if more than Lite shows the issue, for sure.

Speak of the devil:

(This one's a little weird. Normally you determine drift by taking your thumb off the stick. Here we see the input return to neutral while the thumb is pulling the stick to the left. I suppose it's drift, though.)

It's amazing how Nintendo get away with this.

Any normal company would get destroyed. They simply get away with releasing a flawed product.

And I say that as a fan boy.

The only thing I can think of is that people aren't returning the consoles or sending them in to be fixed.

If the local Gamestop shifts 50 Switch consoles on a Saturday and all 50 are coming back to the store for refunds then they are going to kick up a stink.
(I don't know how many consoles would typically be sold in any given store)

Similarly if Nintendo themselves ship 5 million Switch consoles across North America but then they are getting 2 or 3 million returns then this is going to be dealt with for sure.

It really depends on the numbers.
They would obviously anticipate some faulty consoles and returns etc but how many is anybody's guess.

Even 10% of consoles would be a massive deal so I can only assume it is not impacting that many people or at least it is not impacting people to the extent that they are returning the console or sending it off for repair.

The understanding was that the drift is caused by long term wear.
I also thought it was mostly to do with the left stick.
So Switch Lite consoles with drift has to be a different issue, surely?

In any case they are getting away with it because the number of returned consoles is not enough that they are freaking out.

I think that's just because the left stick is used more. Movement versus camera, in 3D games; and the right stick is hardly used at all in 2D games.

I got my right stick gone mad on me.
What I did was - I pour some ethanol in the stick and in a couple of minutes the ethanol vaporized and the stick worked fine.
Just a tip.
Did you pour it into the Joycon? I'd be nervous to do that since ethanol absorbs water vapor in the air and water can damage electronic components. Joycons with charged batteries would be susceptible to liquid damage I would think.

I remember thread here shitting on OG switch in favor of Lite, welp
Personally I prefer the versatility of the OG, and my poor closeup vision likes the bigger screen. Plus, it has rumble and gyro etc. And, now we know being able to change out the controls turns out to be a real advantage if your analogs start to go bad.

But, I get the appeal of the smaller model. If all you want is handheld mode, it's a nice design.

That is not Joy con Drift. Joy con drift has the analogue stick just firing off in one direction without someone gently pushing it that way.

Yeah. This issue was such a colossal fuck up, I'm glad it's not the same. I'm surprised this wasn't brought forth in a big way previously. I mean, I don't have one yet, but millions of people have been using the Switch for more than two years now.

lol. also the dpad is having issues. best to just avoid the Lite completely it seems :messenger_tears_of_joy: it's not even a real Switch anyway.

nintendo are fixing it for free if you send your controller in to them. so not really a big deal. if you're one of the few people with this issue just send it off to nintendo.

edit: of course if you bought a Lite then well...send your entire device in :messenger_grinning_squinting:
Total crapshot though depending on which customer service rep you get regardless of their announcement.

But is that a hardware issue? You'd think this was something on the software side seeing how this occurs with pretty much all their controllers, apparently even if they're hardwired like on the Lite.
Definitely a hardware issue. I replaced my launch Switch joycon using a cheap repair kit and the drifting went away

Come on guys, we're in a Nintendo renaissance.

Grab a copy of Super Mario Party and lets start destroying some badly designed controllers.

Just like the old days, right?

The N64 actually worked though.

Please don't tell me you aren't aware of N64 control sticks wearing out en masse. Their demise was hastened greatly by Mario Party 64.

In fact, it was a similar materials issue, where plastic micro dust from moving parts touching each other would end up inside the mechanism.

No, I never heard about it.

Did you actually own/use an N64? If so, this is pretty wild.

Everyone I know ended up with bad N64 controllers. We even took them apart to swap sticks to keep our preferred color shells.
I only played my cousins. I had the PS1. Maybe I was just too young to remember.

The issue took awhile to manifest and didn't really become widely known or severe until Mario Party came out so not surprising if you didn't own one.
I had an N64 but no Mario Party and I didn't know about the issue but I did get the it on one of the controllers... which I bought used. LOL probably from some Mario Party playing mofo ffs.

Switch build quality is the worst out of any Nintendo console I've owned. I'm on my second Switch and have had it for less than a year with maybe 150 hours of play time on it, already the internal fan makes a constant clicking noise when it's running at high RPM and the dock's video output is completely fucked. It won't output video to 1080p no matter what I do, it just spazzes out and goes black. Needs to be set to 720.

I guess I could just send it in but I've never had to send in a Nintendo console before and I've played most of them very, very hard.

The last Nintendo console I owned was the GameCube and that thing was solid in terms of build quality. I don't remember hearing many complaints in regard to GC hardware in general.
It sounds as if Nintendo's build quality has taken a hit post GameCube.

It's going to be interesting to follow this story during the holiday shopping season. Between stick drift and issues with digital software permissions for owners who have multiple Switch units, an influx of angry phone calls and social media posts due to Switch Lite problems on Christmas Day could damage Nintendo a bit.

On top of this, most reviewers say that the d-pad is pure garbage for diagnal presses (In fighting games).

How did Nintendo go from being the d-pad king, to having the worst in the business?

Switch Pro Controller runs circles around DS4 in build quality and battery.
This is what pisses me off. The Pro Controller is extremely comfortable and extremely well built...

Except for that goddamn awful D-pad. It could have been basically perfect with just a traditional Nintendo style D-pad.

But no. I use it for 3D games then have to use a third party controller docked or the Hori D-pad Joycon on the go for 2D.

At this point the idea of "rushing" seems to fit, since people pretty much like to parrot the fact that "this and pokemon will farm like hotcakes". 2DS were kinda garbage as well, but its for pokemon.

My GC and it's controllers are still working fine. It's not that I just like them, but I find impressive how much they're lasting considering before that I had N64, and their controllers were a crap(although I could still somewhat play on them until a certain point).

When I owned a couple of GameCubes during that era, I definitely noticed how well built the console and controller felt. The GameCube's official peripherals didn't have that distinctive cheap, flimsy plastic feel which was synonymous with the N64's peripherals.
I'm sure if I had kept my GameCube, it would still being going today.

Remember when they had to send out gloves to people because of the stick hurting people? 🤣

You should send it for repair. It is also not weird for you to become one of 5% owners whose Switch get defected.

Man if this happened to xbox or Sony people would flip. Nintendo gets a pass

I don't see anyone giving them a pass. I'm a huge Nintendo fanboy and I think the joycon issues are flat out inexcusable and I can only hope it doesn't happen to me. It's yet to be confirmed if this issue is the same drifting as the older model, but don't mistake that as people defending Nintendo.

The fact that so many people are talking about it means that Nintendo is not getting a pass.
They are definitely getting a pass, as in I am passing on their systems till they sort out their shit. It's quite unfortunate as they've gotten past their phase of slightly upgraded Wii U games and now there are several good original games.

No you're not. You're far from a fanboy since you're far too reasonable, you're just a Nintendo fan. Don't sell yourself short.

My joycons have had zero issues (knock on wood) and I only really ever hear about it on this forum. Is it really as prevalent as you're all making it out to be?

I can tell you NeoGAF didn't collectively get together to file a class action lawsuit against Nintendo.
