Still upset about the Smash Fighter Ballot

Kid Goku (with Powerpole and Nimbus action) should have been in. That's my only disappointment.

Everything else is fine.
goku should never be in a smash game. plenty of videogame characters that deserve to be in the game over him.

Both Cloud & Bayonetta were fantastic fan-voted additions, and I'm looking forward to trying both out. However, "Corn" just struck me as a character solely added to promote the upcoming Fire Emblem Fates, & he doesn't do anything interesting from his gimmick of "changing his human limbs to dragon limbs for extra damage" to "transforming into a not-really dragon & suck everyone into a vortex".

Still, 2/3 is sold, so having this dud of a fighter isn't a complete wash.

Six Fire Emblem characters in general is a bit too much. FE has grown more popular since Awakening but the franchise is hardly one of Nintendo's flagship franchises.

I'm not upset at who we got, I'm just upset that we never got the results. That was always the part I was looking forward to.

The roster is already seriously incredible. But if I had to choose, I'd add :

KOSMOS
GOKU
SNAKE
SORA

The first one especially shouldn't be a stretch since it's NamcoBandai+Monolith Soft. IT CAN'T BE A MORE IN-HOUSE CHARACTER. And Sora's no stranger to Nintendo thanks to the handheld games.

They made seven DLC fighters in total and you expected five from the Ballot?

Tell me about it, all that fuss for a character who should have been in the game to start with (or at least the first wave of DLC). The whole DLC situation has been poor, two mascots from franchises which haven't seen a mainline entry on Nintendo systems for decades (and are firmly aligned with Sony nowadays), some veteran characters that shouldn't have been cut in the first place and another unimaginative Fire Emblem choice.

Not releasing the ballot results just screams of Sakurai pretty much ignoring the votes and picking what he wanted, if she truly was the most popular choice that was sensible to obtain the rights for then why the secrecy?

I'm fine with it. I kinda hoped during the Direct he would have at least told us who were the top 5 runner ups/choices.

But I can see why he decided against it...so he wouldn't fan the flames of any characters with a rabid fan base

Yep, this is my only disappointment. Kid Goku would have made a great addition, but whatever, I already let it go.

Plenty of characters deserve to be in the game rather than at least 3 from Fire Emblem, to be honest. But yes, that's my opinion and I'm sure FE fans will disagree with me, as I disagree with you when you say Goku should never be in a Smash game.

Why do/did so many people want Goku to be in Smash? Smash is a celebration of video games, primarily but not limited to Nintendo. I get that some of the support is joking, but it seems like a lot of it is genuine and I just don't get it.

Like, wouldn't it be better to have a localized SSB style Shonen Jump game?

I mean, I actually would of liked one more ballot character (one that was possible to add, anyway), but an additional three is pretty greedy there, OP.

You expected them to release the results? That would have just added more fuel to the fire, not just in this instance but also when the next Smash comes out and Ridley still doesn't get in.

Nobody ever seriously expected it to be direct democracy, right? They even had to a asterisk Bayo's win to exclude unviable characters, whatever that means.
I thought the Ballot was more of a suggestion box, on the site it stated that all suggestions are "considered" whether thats true or not I don't really care, but I went wild with my suggestions.

In the direct, Sakurai said Bayonetta was at the top of "realizable" characters which I think means a two main things are considered.

1. Licensing: Is it possible to get the owners of said character to agree on their inclusion and give the OK on music, stages, trophies, ect.

2. Sakurai's Whim: Almost everything else falls into this one and is probably the most important. A characters design, source material, popularity, and other similar things don't matter as long as Sakurai doesn't see it happening. He has been known to change his mind though, like how Villager wasn't in Brawl because he thought it'd be unnatural for Animal Crossing. Sakurai wasn't even going to include Pac-Man if Capcom didn't allow the classic design. So, maybe some of the Ballot choices might be floating around in his brain until they start "dancing" for the next Smash Bros.

Time contraints might also be an issue, but I think these two were the driving forces.

Were the results ever posted to the public? I'd imagine if it were that a lot of answers would be given by default if it includes overly wishful characters.

I guess that's the main issue I had with the ballot though, a lot of characters (like Cloud) might have been considered 'too wishful' and thus overlooked by people who WOULD have voted for him, where as other people likely voted on ones that were too difficult to include. I guess in the end, it would have been cooler to have a sort of list to pick from for a vote rather than whoever we want, but I understand that is limited in its own right.

Perhaps making all voters pick a top 10 so that they could extrapolate those into the ones they can achieve? Not sure what could have worked better really.

If it were a democratic vote where the most popular yet sensible (i.e. not Shrek) character got added, yes? There would be nothing to hide. Hiding it just suggests that Sakurai ignored everything and picked what he wanted again.

I think this is grounds for impeachment.

There should have been another ballot character over Corrin for sure (what an incredibly tone deaf decision on their part) but another three on top of that, no, that's absurd.

K Rool hate is still real. Y'all just mad if he was in I'd kick your ass with a low tier super heavyweight that plays like Snake.
I'd like to see the in depth vote results, not just the order but what characters are considered viable choices. Would've been interesting to see if they disregarded Shantae/Shovel Knight for being too obscure.

It wasn't a democratic vote, it was a suggestion box. And even then Bayonetta was one of the top choices anyway so it wasn't like Sakurai ignored everything in favour of a choice that only got two votes simply because it was a character from one of his own games.

It is kind of a bummer that we got Corrin - a blatant advert character from an already overrepped franchise - over a different Nintendo-owned newcomer that could have been pulled from the ballot, but that's that. I don't think only Bayonetta came from the ballot, though - I imagine Cloud being in was influenced by good results on the ballot, and Corrin might have also gotten some support there.

Fingers crossed that Smash NX brings in a few more ballot results. Maybe we'll get Inklings in that one? c:

Really would love to see the results, though I can see how that would just kind of stir stuff up and not be in their best interest to release them.

Also, shame Isaac didn't make it in. Hopefully next time...

Goku. Is. Not. A. Video. Game. Character! Why. Do. You. People. Not. Get. It?!

The lack of Inklings and Wonder-Red give me a little hope they're being saved for the next game.

Aside from Roy and lack of Wolf, I have no problem with the DLC at all. I got Lucas back and three of my all-time dream additions: Ryu, Cloud, and Bayonetta. I feel like Bayonetta's inclusion especially is a huge deal to me that symbolizes a bunch of things - PlatinumGames' rise to greatness, the career of Hideki Kamiya (one of the best game designers), a modern-day cult hit even though some shot her down for various reasons, one of the most iconic female protagonists, and the one character who unifies both Nintendo and Sega--something that would've been impossible two decades ago.

Corrin struck me as an odd choice at first but they look fun to play as so I don't mind too much.

Why does it matter as long as they're popular and beloved characters? Every time I see this point it just comes off as light console warring.

I don't think Corrin is an advertisement at all - Fates has been out in Japan for months now, and I don't think it's even getting DLC anymore. I figure the guy from #FE would have been the ad choice, since it wasn't released when Corrin was announced.

This is another thing people forget. Fates isn't an upcoming game.

Sakurai just REALLY likes Fire Emblem. He probably played Fates, saw a dragon lord, and was so erect at the idea of implementing that in game that he slapped Corrin at the top of the DLC list.

Sakurai has said that Fates's western release was more tied to Corrin than Japan's. As backward as it seems I think Corrin was intended for the western fanbase. I think he was an attempt at artificially inducing Melee Marth/Roy popularity.

I mean it's not like they're throwing the results away after bayonetta is released. Sakurai straight up said that this would influence future smash games

I will say the only thing that's bad about the Ballot is how all the smugness comes out the woodwork and people outright try to make people feel bad about the characters they picked. It's so unneeded and it's another case of the worst of the Smash community rearing it's ugly head yet again.

I'd believe it.

Sakurai: "Ridley? Eh, he's too big and stuff. I mean, and he's just a boring dragon. Who even cares?"
*sees dragon lord in Fire Emblem*
Sakurai: "Oh hell yes, I love dragons. Dragons are awesome, let's put him in."

Unfortunately the ballot wasn't clearly billed as being a suggestion box, so people understandably expected that the winner(s) would be one to get added.

Why does it matter as long as they're popular and beloved characters? Every time I see this point it just comes off as light console warring.
Because the point of Smash Bros is being a celebration of Nintendo's history. The likes of Megaman and Sonic are perfectly fine since they are part of that, how exactly does Cloud fit in? Same reason I was not happy with Danica Patrick and that Yogscast guy being in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
