Still upset about the Smash Fighter Ballot

Does that also make Luffy, Naruto, Ichigo, and all the other Jump characters "video game characters"?
Fuck off with that

Goku is based on Crono of Chrono Trigger. They were created by the same artist and it is hinted that they are the same character. Chrono Trigger is one of the most acclaimed classical videogaming titles. So yes, Goku is a video game character and belongs in Smash more than corrin

If the enhanced NX Smash port is true, you can bet your hide they'll include new characters to entice double dipping; I'll eat the hat I don't own if the Inkling isn't one of those.

Inkling, Rhythm Heaven and Ice Climbers are likely sure thing for next Smash.

Poe's law is hitting this post hard.

Except Goku was created 11 years before Crono ever existed, so I'm not sure where you're pulling this logic from.

Even with those small percentages, you're going to have an obvious winner come out quickly. What doesn't make sense to me is that you're telling me all the other characters people could've voted for were so intensely fractured that Bayonetta-- who happened to have a game that sold poorly on the Wii U-- won? It just really felt like when coupled with Corrin they went for the "let's use the last two to sell more copies of games!" because one has a Wii U game, the other a 3DS game rather than "this character won the ballot hands down!"

I think it would've been nice to have them end it with one more Nintendo character instead of Corrin too, but it likely would've still felt like an ad.
I dunno if you're going to have an obvious winner right away--I think you'd see a bunch of frontrunners (and this is exactly where I think the K. Rool costume came from), but I have a feeling there was no one clear runaway winner in the ballot. I'm thinking the top contenders were all very close, but in reality, we just don't know, and "realizable" is ridiculously vague.

Lmao

I'm upset too. Theres only 58 characters. That's less than half of League of Legends character count and still way less than Dota 2. Nintendo just being cheap as always. No wonder they are so doomed these days.

[*]Ink might have been technically challenging to implement, and DLC doesn’t really afford a lot of time for experimentation. There’s a really tight schedule. The team would be fucked if they had to cut a DLC character mid-development.[/LIST]

Yeah, I've been assuming something like this was the case for a while now. They probably didn't want to put in Inklings without their signature gameplay mechanic (swimming through ink that you paint on the stage) and they either didn't have enough time to get it to work or there was no way to get it to work on 3DS.

I'm glad they didn't shove inklings in Smash without the ink though. Otherwise that mechanic might've never made it into Smash judging by how infrequently Sakurai seriously updates character movesets. At least now there's a chance of it getting into a future game.

If the next Smash doesnt have K Rool, Chibi Robo or Banjo then i'll be very disappointed.

I love that Bayonetta got in but i find it really hard to believe that she was number 1 in europe. I really want to know who were the top 5 for the US too cause im positive one of them was Wolf.

"Oh, we provided a way for fans to directly tell us what characters they want in, and now we literally have a list of the most desired characters? Lol, fuck that, I'm putting in another Fire Emblem character."

Oh. Now Chrono Trigger makes sense. It was a prequel to Dragonball Z.

Guess Blue Dragon is the sequel to Dragonball even.

*****

On topic. More than glad with Bayonetta.
And as noted the poll was always intended to gauge.

And in the general, the fact that you can have Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu, Cloud and Bayonetta fighting against Mario, Link, Pikachu and Donkey Kong is just incredible.

Says Nintendo right on the cover.

If only it wasn't such a licensing nightmare we could have gotten a third part. SS God Goku, Sage mode Naruto, Time skip Ichigo and Rukia with bankai, Kaiba and 50 other characters.

Why wasn't Banjo in Smash 64 and Melee anyway? He was a pretty big deal for Nintendo before Microsoft bought out Rare.

I wonder what new entries would be in if the ballot happened now.

I think Elma would be the character that goes the most places up.

I also feel it may be possible that "Not another Fire Emblem character" gets some votes.

In an e-mail response asking about including a character from Rare (Japanese), Sakurai stated that it was difficult to include a character from Rare for various reasons. While some may see Banjo and Kazooie’s inclusion as natural, they couldn’t make it in due to ‘adult circumstances’ (This most likely means copyright).

And to be quite frank, I'm glad they weren't in either of those games, because of you-know-what happening afterwards, meaning they'd most likely be cut from the series like Snake was.

Im pretty sure Cloud was on the ballot also

I doubt he was. I'm sure most people ruled him out, in favor of the Gokus, Bayonetta, Snake, etc. Cloud was just one of those ones that Sakurai knew everyone wanted. I mean pretty much every single photoshopped character select screen, Cloud was on like 99% of them.

As stated earlier in the thread, Sakurai wasn't entirely sure about another Fire Emblem character. The devs & I think the higher-ups at Nintendo (correct me if I'm wrong) convinced him otherwise.

64 was an expirement with only Nintendo characters and Melee had a really short development time to have it out for the Gamecube launch window.

Guest characters were thought of late in Melee. Is why Snake was there from the announcement of Brawl and Sonic was added late.

Though he did said that the idea was to have a Final Fantasy character.

Cloud was chosen because he is more known. So maybe they did used poll requests to see Cloud getting more mentions than Squal or Terra as far as FF characters go.

I don't get the Corrin hate. He's a weredragon pokemon with a chainsaw sword (or she). That's ace!

The more the merrier, sure.
But I honestly think, apart from "maybe" Bomberman and Snake (#fuckKonami) there is not much of a margin left to argue that the roster is incredibly awesome and relevant.

And what exactly would be achieved by publishing the top 5?
You already have people in this thread arguing their tin foil hat off how democracy is a hoax and the man (Sakurai) is putting us down. I am sure they would feed on any top 5 released, either calling it fake (like Bayonetta's win in EU territories) or arguing that since Goku is a clear winner, Sakurai would have been morally obliged to sell his sick hand to get him in the game.

Can't have the same people making characters for as long as they have been.

This is exactly it. We'd all love to see more characters, but they were working on Smash already far longer than planned. The ballot was a favour to us, and it ended up getting us Bayonetta which is pretty sweet. Whether or not it's who you wanted, well...they're never going to please everyone.

Consider the vast character selection we did get. Cloud is in Super Smash Bros.!

I mostly assumed everyone thought he was a joke to vote for at that point. It seemed so ridiculous before his announcement..

Exactly. People thought about a Square Enix rep before he was announced and we got answers like Kefka, Sora, Terra, etc. Then everyone's minds were blown when Cloud was announced.

Well, they probably would take smash ballots' votes to their hearts for next Smash Bros iteration.

Takamaru says hi.

+Sakurai considering him for multiple Smash games (But dropped due to no high amount of interest, but Sakurai seems like he really wants him)
+Murasame Castle getting a rerelease and has sold decently
+A good amount of talks for him within the ballot

That should at least get him planned/scrapped for 5 as the retro newcomer (Ice Climbers, Pit, Duck Hunt).

Not and I very much doubt they will ever release it the mountains of salt would be endless.

The only fighter I bet was in top 10 and wanted was Snake, but Konami basically made it impossible.

Arent the results of all the previous smash polls released? We will probably get the results of this one eventually. As in years later.

I think he only did that for Melee and Smash 4 pre release.

Melee's were. Brawl's might've, but I think it was kept secret. This will probably be private.

I remember people like Banjo, Diddy, Wario, and James Bond (yes, really) were on the Melee one. It's on Sourcegaming probably.

People were allowed to vote for Bayonetta without having to own Bayonetta 2. I'd argue that Bayonetta the character is bigger than any one of her games. I'm not sure how to best articulate this, but even though Bayonetta is far from a mainstream character, I'm not surprised that she "won" the ballot. The first Bayonetta sold 1.35 million copies, and I'm sure a large percentage of that audience knew about the Smash ballot. Bayonetta is for experienced/"hardcore" gamers, and hardcore gamers tend to be aware of what's happening on the Internet. I can't go a day without seeing a Bayonetta post or avatar on GAF, and there are a bunch of YouTube reaction videos of genuine Bayonetta fans excited about her inclusion.

Indeed, plus Bayonetta 2 is a popular and well-known game among Wii U enthusiasts (i.e. the console many players of SSB4 are familiar with), even launching around the same time as SSB4's vanilla launch. As soon as Bayo2 was announced I saw speculation that she could be playable.

Only the "Smash 2" results were released. The Brawl results were kept secret, but Sakurai responded to some of the entries on the official site.

Edit: Sorry for the double post.

While I'm curious what the results are I didn't really expect we'd ever find out, though it was interesting that they mentioned Cloud was the top voted FF7 character.

They could've put the top 20 in and I'd still probably not get a character I want in. Inkling wasn't possible on 3DS apparently according to a snippet from some interview and apparently all Ashley is worth is a Mii Costume even though there's a warioware stage already in there (8-volt's gamer) complete with 2 Ashley tracks and whatnot so they'd only have had to work on the character :P

The only ones who truly feel missing from the roster to me are the Ice Climbers, Wolf, & the Inklings. I literally have no other complaints with the rest of the roster.

They said that Cloud was the most-requested Final Fantasy character overall, not just for FF7.

A shame tbh, I would have loved a Snake amiibo =/

I do have this lingering feeling that maybe Konami accepted the idea of putting Snake in Smash again but Sakurai most likely wanted Solid Snake but Konami wanted to include Big Boss to promote MGSV and that's when things went south... or maybe Konami doesn't really care =P

Sakurai said Final Fantasy characters were popular in the ballot, so they just decided to add the most popular.

Ah good, I thought that's what they said but I couldn't remember and was too lazy to look it up so I just restricted it to FF7 to be on the safe side :3

More than likely this one

Yeah I was a little skeptical at first but I don't have a hard time believing it when I sit down and think about it. The Bayonetta games might not be pushing Street Fighter/Final Fantasy numbers but I think there's got to be more overlap with the Smash fanbase than other top candidates. Characters like K. Rool and Isaac are popular among the community, but obviously making such irregular appearances means that a good chunk of the voters might not even know/care about them. A lot of Splatoon fans are kids who might not have enough knowledge/interest to vote in a Smash poll, and even then not all of the people who are fans of both Splatoon and Smash would want to see the Inkling in Smash since it is such a new IP. A lot of people took Wolf's inclusion for granted so I imagine he didn't get quite as many votes as he would have. Shovel Knight's popularity is almost entirely in the west from what I can tell. And of course there's the joke votes (Shrek/Goku/Spongebob) but I don't think they were nearly as popular as some people would suggest they were since it's mostly a Smash forum circlejerk thing.

Bayonetta is popular everywhere (to an extent), particularly among the hardcore crowd. She's been on other consoles so her fans aren't exclusive to Nintendo platforms, and the fact that she stands out so much compared to everyone else in terms of design and abilities makes me think that even people who aren't super familiar with her games might vote for her. The timing was right and she had a lot going for her so I'm not surprised that, if they were only choosing one character to come out of the ballot, it would be her. The only character that I'm pretty sure beat her out worldwide was Snake, who we can assume falls under the "non-negotiable/realizable" category and that it's probably all Konami's fault.

I would really like for Sakurai to explain what happened with Snake but it feels like we hear so little from Kojima/Konami about their falling out as it is that I'm not surprised he'd be hesitant to say anything.
