Good for you, it must be nice.I've personally never drawn parallels with actual ethnicity and the darkness of evil characters.
Ok.It's not racism.

I don't see anyone saying you should hate it. So where are you getting this we?Are we going to hate on star wars now because of the light side and dark side?
Hyperbolic post aside, I don't think people can deny that there have been more good white guys in gaming than coloured people.
Although I already apologized for misspeaking there, I must ask...are gym leaders considered good guys? I mean they're not evil but I never thought of them as good guys either since they are your opposition.

Pretty much since R/S, a number of them have actively helped the player at various moments during the story. This was especially the case in B/W where they all come together to help combat Team Plasma

Ok.
Just think it's funny how "gaf is not a hivemind" is commonly accepted, yet it's apparently fine when you limit the generalisation to gaming and OTAfter the RE5 controversy and numerous like it, Feminist Frequency, GamerGate, MGSV and Quiet, Princess Peach in Mario Run, etc and weeks ago with the black inkling thread and just this week with the black Samus reboot thread, if your takeaway here is #notallofgamingside then just lol

Even without that it is hard to see the gym leaders/whoever fights against you (besides team whatever) as evil. Sure, they fight against you. But an opponent of the hero/protagonist is not automatically evil.Pretty much since R/S, a number of them have actively helped the player at various moments during the story. Ok.
The caucasian representation of negativity is black and its derivatives. I don't see why there needs to be a debate with OP, that's a basic understanding of the world we live in.
It's pretty obvious that a non-racist representation of characters in video games comes from untying skin color from discernment.

I'll do this now. Long list incoming.
Resident Evil 4
Sad shit. If the black character ain't evil, they're angry(Barret) or an idiot(Sazh) or a mix of both(Cole Train).
Spaniards are not brown people, dude.
I don't know that I can name a single black main protagonist that doesn't have some sort of vague criminal past or is otherwise a walking stereo type.

Faith (Mirror's Edge)
the prince (PoP)
Jade (Beyond Good & Evil)
Aveline (AC3 Liberation)
I said non-white. I excluded crazy stuff like green (Grunty) but anything that's close enough to human and is not caucasian, italian or japanese is non white in this list.

In this light, yes she looks quite white, from the game (where one only sees a bit of her) I had the impression she was slightly brown.
??????????
Feel free not to count Resi 4, I just counted them as not being part of white, which is not exactly the same as traditional white, since it also includes Japanese and Italians, who are quite common but also depicted with quite light skin.I'm telling you that spaniards are full white skinned unless they had spent a shit ton of time at the beach. I'm a spaniard and I'm probably lighter skinned than any caucasian. Non white mean non white, not whatever you say it mean.
Spain is not mexico, you now that, right?
PS: Not meaning to sound rough at all though I think I sound like it, but just for you to know that Spaniards = white in pretty much all cases, and even more if they live in the north, where you can't see the sun most of the year.
Putting the whole list in here would be excessive, since these are about 200 games (I only counted console games, no bundled games, no handheld games, no remakes if original included). I counted as white traditional whites, Japanese and Italians (to account for Mario). My final results are:
Games without any humans whatsoever: 45
Games with humans, but without non whites: 96
Games with black people, but only non-negative ones: 21
Games with black people, both negative and non-negative ones: 29
Games with black people, but only negative ones: 5
The ones from the last bracket are:
Zelda 2 (Dark Link)
Rayman (Dark Rayman, counting the fariy as white)
Resident Evil 4
Wario Land: Shake Dimension (Captain Syrup)
Resident Evil 5
okay, but then fairskinned princess, dark desert thief gannon, midna the exotic princess from darkland or whatever...like none of that pattern troubles you a bit?

Still, it's a case of a black version of a character for an evil version. Same for Dark Rayman. This topic is not excluding cases where there is some story explanation for this, right?Dark Link is a literal shadow though... He's even called Link's Shadow and NES Remix even calls him Shadow Link.
It's like Peter Pan fighting his shadow. Which Zelda series does take bits of inspiration from. Some games more than others like OoT.
The good old, "I got mine" mentality.I guess it is. I have dark skin and deal with racism regularly, If the whole Light and Darkness trope, which is older than the pyramids, doesn't affect me when I want to be entertained, it's probably a good thing.

The thread is about wanting to not have darker skin versions as evil characters as it connotates as black people as bad. Something that is literally completely black is something most people can dissociate with race.Still, it's a case of a black version of a character for an evil version. Same for Dark Rayman. This would be a topic on GAF.

Are most of the dark side peeps represented by skin colour?
