Street Fighter : 3rd Strike SUPER appreciation thread

I have the PS2 version and I have a question. The game looks significantly worse than the Dreamcast version because it's scaled. Does the Xbox version of SFIII:3rd Strike JPN (Region Free) for Xbox or Anniversary Collection (NA) for Xbox scale the graphics as well?

I don't think there is anything wrong with the PS2 version (or Xbox). I am pretty sure the dreamcast version is the one that is scaled wrong (smaller than arcade).

Well technically, the DC is scaled too. You can use the code for a fake scanline filter, but it's still scaled. No home port uses the arcades 384x224 resolution.

The Xbox version is basically the same as the PS2 version. It's a little smoother than the PS2 though (so if the filter bothers you on PS2, it's gonna be even worse for you on Xbox). However, on an HDTV, the Xbox version is bar none the best looking. On SDTV I actually prefer the PS2 version.

W Impact on Dreamcast is the only home SF3 port that's in a nice low-res mode. Really criminal treatment for such a beautiful game. Those video display codes for Third Impact DC don't do a lot, IMO.

As far as I know Xbox isn't even capable of outputting low-res video modes, so, yeah. PS2 is, though. Darn developers!

Yeah, Xbox can't do below 640x480. I imagine the PS2 rev was released at 640x480 either to make it easier to port to Xbox or more likely Capcom thought 640x480 scaled and filtered would look better on modern tvs. W Impact on DC looks great when I use the VGA adapter but it looks like shit running on my HDTV, so perhaps Capcom's decision isn't completely without merit.

I've been playing this a lot lately in anticipation of SFIV, and this game is so perfect. The backgrounds, the characters, the animation, the music, the system... it's just flawless. I hope that SFIV adds some 3s, it'd be a real shame if Makoto, Yun, Elena, Urien, etc. don't get a second chance.

So Q is one of my favorite Street Fighter characters, but I really dont know anything about the guy.

Was there ever anything explained about this mysterious fighter??

I need to track down the X-Box version so I can play online. Luckily, I still have a local arcade with a 3S cab and fairly regular comp. I go there from time to time but those guys are way out of my league. :D

I was thinking about bumping this thread 2 weeks ago when I picked up SF Anniversary (for $7!! :D), so I'll just play through the game instead since it's been a couple days.

I'm interested in hearing what sorta controller you use to play Street Fighter, Scarlet. That Final Atomic Buster avatar you used a while back caught my attention.

Been playing more CvS2 lately. The Just Defend is SO MUCH easier (and nicer) to pull than the parry.

I just use the normal PS2 controller. Right now I have the R2 button do Jab+Short for throws and L2 for Strong+Forward for the low block poke, but if there were any 6 face button real PS2 controllers, I'd imagine that'd be much better. I can't use arcade sticks on consoles as they don't work well in my lap compared to when I'm standing up at an arcade machine.

I'm just glad I got the alternate Makoto and Chun Li colors!

He's the guy on the boat in Ken's stage in SF2:

You know...i've been searching for that Fighting stick 3 for the PS3...future fighting games and current ones...however I just realized from Scarlet's post that I really dont have a good place to sit the stick either.

Aside from a TV tray, nothing else is really compatible with the seating in the room where all the gaming stuff is.

Wow... that means he could "return" for an iteration of IV. Especially since its supposed to be Alpha, II, IV, III.

Also SSF2THD is taking too long.

I remember that Q thing from awhile back..was it ever confirmed or posted in that 'videogame facts people don't really know' thread?

Seriously, Himuro -_-.

Anyway, yeah. Probably the greatest 2D fighting game ever created.

While I certainly won't disagree with your opinion, there are instances where I need to get better at parrying, especially the way I want to play with Necro. Far too often do I get severely punished by crouching shoto's / nimble characters and I can't even parry certain projectiles consistently, leading to even more needless damage. Especially because I sometimes play pretty defensively without turtling.

Thing is, I don't necessarely want to parry everything, or even certain specials, but I feel parries could be a big help to the way I play. I like to (try at least) confuse people and attack in ways the opponent wouldn't expect me to. Giving the impression that I can't parry for shit will (in theory) help me catch people off guard. If I were to parry at an unexpected moment (for instance, when the both of us have little health left), then there's definitely a window of opportunity for me to inflict potentially significant damage if I can follow up with a decent offensive. Don't think I'll bother with jump-in parries with Necro though (often use his Air Drill as a part of the above strategy), but I am going to try with aerial parries. The latter should be beneficial to characters with Shoryuken-ish moves.

Throwing normally isn't a problem, so I don't think I need to practice a whole lot with that. Maybe you can see for yourself how I play on Xbox Live, if the latency issue doesn't bother you that much / wreck your gameplay? The sessions with LakeEarth were really smooth, despite the both of us basically living in opposite ends of the world.

if you are trying to bait a move so you can parry and reversal

you are playing necro wrong.

as a massive 3rd strike fan, but way to busy to read through this whole thread

has there been any discussion of the best 3rd strike competitive players per character?

I have been following the likes of top player (per character) like Kuroda(Q), Thanatos(Oro), sugiyama(Necro), RX(Urien), yamakazi(12) etc for a long while now, but i am interested in who people think the top players are per character.

Had some free time last night so I decided to boot this up on the 360. Was actually gonna start an appreciation thread too.

So yeah, such an amazing game despite my small skill set. My favorite character is Dudley, love his range and the special move where he throws his jaw out, sidesteps and cracks the opponent upside the head. He reminds me a bit of Eagle from Capcom SNK 2, another character I loved using. I usually start getting my ass handed to me 1 or 2 stages after the Car bonus round. Regardless of the amount of beatings I take, I just keep coming back for more. And it has an amazing soundtrack to boot.

I'm glad Capcom decided against 2D for Street Fighter 4, it would've come nowhere near the perfection of this game.

We've got a 'new' machine of SFA3 in at work, while I really like the game, it just doesn't compare with SF3:TS.

Being the fan that I am, I did this bit of fan art last summer, never really got around to finish...

Well, it isn't a fact at all, I just like to point out the coincidence. You have to admit though, Q had to be inspired SOMEHOW by that onlooker. The similarities are too close.

That's stunning, but doesn't Oro only have one arm? I could be wrong.

While we're on the subject of fan art, here's some I did a few months ago. I plan to do the rest of the cast at some point.

He DOES have 2, but he keeps one locked away to make the fight fair. If you activate his super with 2 punch buttons, he'll do a SUPER super, ie the giant yellow fireball, 5 rocks instead of 3, etc. When you activate those, you see that he busts out his second arm.

pretty sure he just fights with one arm, the other one wrapped up in his rags.

Yup, he has 2 arms, he does pull it out for one of his supers (as LakeEarth posted). The main reason I had 2 arms sculpted was mainly for anatomy practice :lol

i play oro, and did not know that. thx.

Ahh, gotcha. I don't play as oro often, so I just presumed he had one missing due to the the knot in his clothes there. That and a Dreamcast magazine review I read back when it came out said he was one armed. :D

Wow that's really great. Did you use Z-brush? Entirely of just for the detail? If entirely, I've always wondered if you model something from scratch in Zbrush is it easily posed or is it pretty-much stuck in that position like a real sculpture? Also if you made the base mesh in another program with the normal map done in Z-brush, which app did you use for the main modeling?

I made a pretty simple base mesh in Maya, then did everything in Zbrush2. I then switched over to Zbrush3 when it came out and changed his pose. The transpose tool in Zbrush 3 is great, you're not locked into any base mesh poses.

Thanks. I had another question, but I don't want to take this too far off topic so I'm sending a pm.

Wow this thread is old.....I need a new controller to play this on my PS2 but the Sega SAturn ones are sold out!
As a dpad enthusiast i find the Saturn controller to be a bit inferior to the Neo Geo CD pad. There are still plenty around (the PS2 edition) packaged with King of Fighters 94 Rebout, but i HIGHLY recommend it.

Hey c'mon now, we all know theres no "wrong" way to play. Better ways maybe, but wrong? Nuh uh.

Also Gagaman's art reminds me of stuff from either Dexter's Laboratory or Billy & Mandy for some reason.

EDIT: Or Psychonauts concept art.

That does look spectacular...but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Why is it the best stuff is always hard to find? Shouldn't have bought those damn SF aniversary pads.

Search Neo Geo Pad 2 or King of Fighters 94 on eBay. The controller is a bit expensive but not near the outrageous amount as i've seen the Saturn PS2 controllers these days (>$100).

Safe shipping to Europe is a bit expensive....kinda expected though what to do what to do....

Whoa, that's cool.

I'm guessing you guys already saw it, since it's out from last month, but there's a California tournament from that Shend guy on youtube that's just over 3 hours. I finished watching it last night..saw some cool Makoto and Dudley stuff.
