Street Fighter V Beta Thread: Welcome, future '16ers! (Currently Inactive!)

Questions for sf vets or pro and please answer this. I need confidence.

A) when you first started, how long did it take for you to be formidable? How many months or years?

B) what's your training regimen? Say you have 3-hours to play, how would you divide that time?

C) how many hours do you guys play? Is 2 to 3 hours enough?

Played one match last night -- I was Ryu, they were Nash -- out of a collective half hour or so of being connected. I lost the match, but only 'cuz I was a dummy and was largely just doing educated button mashing. Doesn't help that I was using the stock PS4 controller and not my stick; problem is I can't use my stick because of the soft reset every 8 minutes (it has a PS360+ mod). Without knowing *when* I'll get into a match, I can't really use it.

I'm playing competitive since usf4 release on ps4 and so far I play everyday at least an hour. This week i am playing more (at least 3 hours a day) because I will go to my first local tournament this Saturday. I switched from pad to fight stick 2 months ago.

I tried the beta a bit yesterday right after 2PM. Was impressed how I got in at once and I wasnt ever kicked off or forced to fight an opponent. Got to try a bit of everyone before I got bored. Isnt Cammy in the beta? I only see 4 characters.

Her and Birdie got added in around 8pm PST

I don't have an answer to cross-up jumps in the neutral as Bison. :-/

Edit: Oh hey, top of the page, so I'll ask again:

Anyone have a list of combos Nash, Ryu, Cammy, and Birdie can do? Looking to make videos showing them for folks.

His super hits everywhere around him apparently. A Bison hit me with it last night when I was crossing him up.

On combos, not sure how much effort you want to put into that since the announced new build will basically change everything.

The entry bar for back when I started playing (since OG SFII) versus now is totally different on a few levels. For one, since the internet + social media, the spread of info to doing fancy shit, etc. is so easily acquired and considering that fighters are far and away from being a new genre and style of game to play, it should take far less time to get at least moderately decent in fighters now, so it's nearly an apples to oranges situation to compare to.

Also, so far, this iteration of SF has some of the most leniency to timing I've seen in the series for combos and such, which is ultimately a good thing.

But I "train"/play several hours a day, back then (waaay more due to no responsibilities and younger) and now. A couple hours a day of actual competitive play should have most doing alright within a month or less, considering your learning style and aptitude for everything. Maybe a half-hour to an hour of training mode every now and then to get good at execution, but playing real people is the best trainer for strategies and such.

How's your training regimen? Training mode most of the time or mostly online play?

When you train, you play training mode for 30 mins the most of the time online?

My training is simple: play the game. Every now and then I do training mode when I wanna practice something that I can't get right in matches. But most of the time I'm playing online/offline matches.

Some more to mess around with.
j.mk > s.mp > cr.hp > VTrigger > cr.mp > small tatsu > CA
cr. lk > cr.lp > cr.lp > small tatsu > CA (or EX DP if corner) Nice easy hit confirm combo
b+hk *2 hits* > st.mp > st.hp > st.hk

Thanks! b+hk combos? That's sweet.
Really want to land that first one there. Looks super flashy in text form.

If you you get a knockdown and hit meaty with the second hit of b+hk you can get a cr. hp xx whatever. I need to use it more it's probably easier to time than f+hp.

I was surprised about the B+hk combos, I hope they stay in for the actual release as it changes Ryu in a way he hasn't had before in a mainline SF game. The other combo is fun, and it has a surprisingly low barrier of execution to land, only lag has stopped me a few times.

I've been playing SF seriously since alpha anthology. I don't play everyday but I play every week. Best training you can get is against real people in the same room. It took me about a year to be able to beat everyone I knew.

I've been playing for 12 years now (not an "OG" from the 90s but I think a lot of these guys played a few times in the 90s then stopped for the last 20 years...) and it is pretty much the only game I play. Most of the people that I know that play SF competitively only play SF as well.

Playing online is weird, I think a lot of mind games are lost over online as your opponent could be anyone. The best advice I can give you is to find people who like playing as much as you and get/keep them interested in the game. The quickest way to level up your game is to lose shit loads of times. It doesn't matter how many hours of practice if the quality of the game is poor for example a static dummy or a random online game.

I didn't answer all your questions exactly but I hope this helps.

I lose most of the time. Heck, my win ratio from the beta is 47%. Low number I know. Game is fun

Not anywhere close to a pro, but I have been playing on and off since SF2 hit arcades.

I don't have a training regimen and I don't ever plan to. I learned how to play by playing, a lot. I'm sure there are benefits to dedicating time to formal training, practicing combos repeatedly and studying optimal damage output and whatever. But if I had taken that approach, I wouldn't have been having fun, and I probably wouldn't still be enjoying SF 20+ years later.

This might not apply to you; you're the one who knows your psychology and what you find fun. But you should ask yourself, if I have 3 hours to play, will I have more fun actually playing, or will I have more fun practicing and preparing myself to play at some future time?

For me, given limited time, I want to practice by playing, not "studying" the game. And I'm not saying I'm great at the game, nor am I saying that I wouldn't be better if I took a more studious approach, but I am saying I have had fun with just about every minute I've spent playing, win or lose.

That's essentially 50/50, which doesn't seem bad for a game you haven't played before. Remember that in this beta you're probably more likely to run into SF veterans than beginners.

This may sound like a stupid answer, but before anything have you asked yourself why you want to play?

It sounds like you want to go into this with a purpose beyond just enjoying the game and having fun, which is totally fine lots of people do; but if this is the first fighter you're getting into I might suggest you go into it not forgetting that it's also a really fun genre and doesn't always have to be competitive.

Going straight in and focusing on winning will probably be tough in the beginning because as lots of people say you'll be losing a lot if its your first fighter. Don't focus on your W/L so much and focus on how you're playing more, and you'll be winning plenty in no time.

Awesome I've been gone for a few weeks and will be back home to play some games starting Sunday.

I see. Thanks. You are also right about the beta with more sf veterans. Some of the players that beat me makes sf look so easy.

Just lost to LPN. My first time losing to someone well known in this beta. I got bodied in the 1st round. Put up a good fight in the 2nd and was actually winning. Then it all fell to pieces. If that wasn't bad enough, lag also kicked it and we were teleporting a bit. I was mashing DP and saw it sort of come out and then not lol.

Mashing DP on wake up is definitely not a good idea in this game. I've had my DP stuffed multiple times with normals. lol

You're mashing the wrong one. Use strong DP instead of fierce. Fierce DP has no invincibility at all, it's just for damage. Strong DP will still blow through meaty normals.
