Some site used to have a segment that gave you contested pronunciations straight from developers' mouths. They did ubisoft and whoever they were talking to (that actually worked for the company) said it's yoo like ubiquitous.

I think the name is supposed to be a contraction of ubiquitous software.

So, pronounce ubi like you would pronounce it in ubiquitous.

It's French.

You-Be-Soft is kind of like when people go No Ter Dayme for the French Cathedral.
Uh oh, how do you correctly pronounce Notre Dame?

I alter between ooo-bee-soft and you-bee-soft

This. I used to use the former until I heard every Ubisoft person say it as the latter. I figured that's probably right anyway since it's based in France,

Employees and even the games are inconsistent with the pronunciation.

The opening of Assassin's Creed says "A Ubisoft Montreal Production", implying it's pronouced as "you".

Their Uplay program, which plays off the company name, is almost certainly pronounced "you-play".

I guess they're both acceptable.

Well this is interesting.

Different French Ubisoft executives pronounce it differently.

So um, I guess either is fine.

I pronounce it like I would in French, but with an English accent. Oo-bee-soft.

There's no way to really show the French pronunciation with English text.

So Iwata's U-B-I-Soft pronunciation is canonical because he's an exec for a platform? D:

I think they may be reconsidering the original name because they can make new brands by putting a U in front of things, and those names sound better if pronounced like "you", e.g. UPlay.

They need to settle the matter once and for all with a cage match.

I guess most people pronounce it "you-bee" because it's just standard practice in English.

You wouldn't ride an "ooh-nee-cycle" or go to "ooh-niversity".

I used to say ooh-be-soft, but after that official video where they announced the 'ubiquitous software' thingy, I forced myself to say you-be-soft and now it feels normal to me.

I think this is the video, but I can't be sure as it's now region locked. Can someone in the US please confirm?

In IPA: /nɔtʁ dam/

The /ʁ/ is a guttural r, and you mostly find it in European languages like French and Dutch. For reference, /ɹ/ is regular r; you find this in a lot of Germanic languages (English, German, etc) and some Romance languages.

I'm not gonna lie, though. I chuckle a bit when English-only speakers pronounce "Notre Dame" like /notʃt^ dam/ (notra dahm) or /noʊtərˈdeɪm/ (noter daim). It's odd to me.

While we're at it, how do you pronounce the "Ys" games?
...

IPA: / iːs/

Phonetically: eeeeees. Long e as in "bees". S as in "sonic".

I have heard people pronounce it like "eeeez", but the more precise way to pronounce it is with the voiceless alveolar fricative. I think the voiced alveolar fricative (/z/) is acceptable, though. That's just the way phonotactics work in English most of the time...

lol thanks I've always wondered this

I've never bought one of the games so I haven't been active in any of the threads where it might have come up before
